  1. Wasn't one of the purposes of this sport is to take people to interesting places they might not have otherwise gone to? Done tastefully I think it's a good idea. If you consider the fact that should somebody find a bloody sock they'd put it on e-bay, I can see no harm or insult in hiding a cache in the area. Somebody might even say a prayer while they're there......
  2. The only cache I've failed at was in Hawaii, the cache owner wanted you to go up someone's driveway and through their backyard. I never could find the right driveway and even if I did I wasn't going through someone's yard w/o permission. My last two successes were both hidden behind large chunks of bark on an old stump. Awesome job of hiding something in plain sight........
  3. What's funny to me was that i bought my GPS after "losing" my truck in the woods. It took two dadgum hours to find it again. Discovered geocaching by accident a year later.
  4. Thanks to whoever moved it. I was nervous about getting my III+ wet at first, not anymore. Funny how reading the specs can be helpful. Not sure if I could maintain a good lock while spinning round in a tornado, wouldn't find the cache anyway though.......
  5. I was just curious if anyone else does NOT consider bad weather a deterrent to a day of geocaching? I’m not talking about tornados or hurricanes, just the kind of weather than would cause you to cancell “normal” outdoor activities. It seems like a more satisfiying find when you are wet and/or cold and you know most people are home sitting on their duffs lamenting the lousy weather.
  6. I have a III+ but would love to upgrade to a V. I have used it in airborne, (in military and commercial jets) on my bike, in my car, and of course in my hand. I have a mag-mount rooftop antenna for the car so the detachable antenna is a necessity. I think you will be happy with the GPS-V.
  7. I have had very little trouble with using it on a commercial flight. That’s one reason I like the detachable antenna, you can also aim it. I once had a stewardess ask me what it was and I explained it was the same as what the pilot was using in the cockpit. She seemed to be wavering so I told her to ask the captain if it was OK. She never came back so I guess it was. On my honeymoon to Hawaii back in February I had no trouble going but on the way back there was a particularly ignorant gal who made a huge deal about it even to the point of trying to frighten the people around us. I just put it away. Criminal
  8. I have a GPS III+ that I bought about three years ago. I have used it geocaching, hiking, driving, and even flying. (I’m a USAF C-141B Flight Engineer) Some of the features I had to have when I was looking for a GPS are, waterproof, detachable antenna, and the trackback function. I wanted waterproof because it rains here in Washington (state) a lot. I personally believe that the best day to go geocaching is when the weather is the worst. It just adds to the adventure. I had to have a detachable antenna to connect it to the aircraft antenna. I have no reception in the cockpit of the plane, even with the antenna pointing out the window. (However, on a commercial airline I have gotten great reception pointing the antenna that came with the unit out the side windows in the cabin. I have a suction-cup RAM mount and fasten it right to the window, I get all the satellites on that side of the plane. I do get funny looks from the cabin crew though and have had to put it away due to a particularly ignorant stewardess.) I may upgrade to the GPS V soon to get WAAS. Just my two cents……..

I already have two FRS and two GMRS radios. i can see no reason to combine the GPS with the radio. Put that money towards a better GPS.
