  1. Awww that's a great story. Nothing helps to heal the pain of the loss of a beloved pet than having a new baby. I'm so sorry for your loss but happy that you've found a new kitty to love. I've got two 10 week old kittens myself right now and my heart is bursting with love. Love the name too.
  2. Yep. Any pen that has purple ink inside and works
  3. It's mostly just damage to myself that occurs and not so much to my gear. I cache with my mom at least once a week and I almost always end up bleeding from my overzealous bushwhacking or twisting my ankle in a hole. A few weeks ago she and I were night caching and I was all excited and following too close behind her when I got smacked in the face just millimeters from my eye with a branch she let go of. Learned my lesson there. Last week I pullted a muscle in my leg when I went running to help my mom who had fallen down. Other than that just some ruined clothes and lots of mud on my car and I dropped my GPS at a cache once but realized it when I got back to the car and went back for it.
  4. Congratulations on the first find and welcome! From the big smiles it looks like everyone had a good time. Keep an eye out for any caches that indicate they are an "easy park and grab". Those might be good for your wife when/if she gets to the point that it's too uncomfortable to go traipsing thru the woods. They may not be as satisfying as finding a giant ammo can, but it may help her to stay more involved until she can get back out there and take longer treks.
  5. I do quite nicely for myself by emptying out the contents of the various lock & lock containers I've found and resell them on the Home Shopping Network.
  6. How is it not a legitimate find? An ALR is an "Additional Logging Requirement." By its very name suggests that you have to do something other then, and in addition to, signing the logbook in order to log it online. There is a mantra in these forums that Geocaching.com is not geocaching the hobby. Sure, it's the 800 lbs gorilla in the room, but geocaching exists outside GC.com. So, one can not say that in order to claim a find on a cache then you must log it on GC.com. Therefore, any find is legitimate regardless of whether it is logged online or not. That's why my real find count will always be much higher than what shows here on GC.com--I've *GASP!* found caches listed exclusively on other websites! Ahhh a technicality. OK I concede that it is a legitimate find, but if the ALR is not satisfied it is not a legitimately loggable find. That 2nd part is a requirement that must be met to log it. That's all I have to say about that as Mushtang has already explained it quite well in post #86.
  7. I just logged a FTDNF this morning. It popped up and I waited a while then went for it and could NOT find it. Two others have since I was there this morning but it was way too cold out there to keep trying so I gave up. I did log the DNF though. Kinda bummed but you can't win 'em all.
  8. I don't think any owners would want to. The only stipulation of a Logging Requirement is that in order to log the cache online the Requirement must be met. Why would an owner want to deny someone logging a legitimate find?Because the person that found the cache didn't complete the logging requirement and therefore by the rules of that cache the logging is not allowed. That seemed like a pretty simple question to answer. Actually, that was a non-answer. Well it seems to me that it is not a legitimate find. If it is found but there are ALR that are not completed then the requirements for completing and making it legitimate are not satisfied. I don't think it's about a cache owner wanting to deny someone anything. The person just has to satisfy the requirements. It's like filling out a form and not filling in all the required fields or going to the DMV and not having one of the documents one needs. It's not complete, go to the end of the line, do not pass go, and try again.
  9. Not trying to rain on your parade or anything, but you may not hear back from some of the people you emailed. Again, not trying to be a jerk, just being practical and speaking from experience. I cache with my mom and we have both emailed cache owners, recent finders, etc and hear back from only a fraction of them for some reason. They may have lost interest, are out of town, don't have notifications turned on, or any number of reasons for not getting back in touch so we've just gotten to the point where we're happy for a response and if no response is given we just move on. Last week I contacted a cache owner with regard to a travelling cache that was within 400 of my house but didn't quite understand. I haven't heard back from him which irritates me a little but there's not a whole lot I can do about it so I've moved on. Oh, and I agree that it's totally lame that the person to whom the cache was transferred doesn't have a clue as to where to find it. Maybe it should be archived or something.
  10. I think it's a cool idea as well and if I came across your cache and found a camera with pictures left to be taken I'd surely take one or two for you. I'm sure others would too. But then you'll have those that think it's a dumb idea and would be bothered by it. You can't make everyone happy all the time so I say just go for it. But also keep in mind that you might end up having someone take a whole roll of useless pictures. My brother did the disposable cameras on every table thing at his wedding hoping people would take pictures of the people at their tables, etc, and one guy ended up taking pics of the toilet, his butt, the urinal and a myriad of other icky things.
  11. I have to disagree with you there and say that there is probably someone there who cares about whatshisname. They may not be geocachers, but I bet there is someone else there who gives a fat rat's you know what Someone in my area has done several SQ caches related to Motown artists and other figures of local importance. While I'm not a big Motown fan, I still have an interest in the caches, the location, the owner, etc so I'd do them. I mean, I'd find them. Edited cuz I caint spel todaye.
  12. Well of course I do it for the fun of it. With the exception of work I try to make everything fun. I wouldn't do crazy things like walk around in the woods at night or stand in a parking lot pretending my GPS is a phone if it wasn't fun. Of course that doesn't mean that I don't log my finds, but if there was no way to log them I'd still geocache. I wake up every day hoping something new is published or that I'll have a chance to find an existing one.
  13. This one is beautiful. Well, they're all beautiful but I just really like this one. And the Marge Simpson quote.
  14. I also have a Zire 72. I haven't seen in since I moved in February, but I know its here somewhere. The Zire72 is great! It can hold thousands of geocache pages, and it sorts through them very quickly due to the fast microprocessor. Load Cachemate and you're all set. I sometimes use the built in voice recorder to make voice memos in the field. I've also found the built in camera adequate for web postings. It also substitutes as an Ipod, and it can hold hours of music or podcasts on 1G SD cards. I also copy GOOGLEMAP screenshots to it as a backup to the paper pages I take along. Paper??? Yes, I still find it very helpful to have a printout of the GOOGLEMAP page showing all the caches in an area. It is a lot easier to look at an overall map of the area showing all geocaches than trying to zoom out on the little GPSr screen. And if you zoom in twice on the Z72, it has all the detail of the printed copy. Here is an example of South-east Mackinac Island. (I saved the image with the GSAK screen copy command) So you can actually see that map of Mackinac on your Palm? That's pretty cool. I'm amazed at how many are on the island too. I've heard there were lots but seeing all the smilies there puts it into perspective.
  15. There is no shortage of snobs who love to crow about their superior experience and to lecture about how their version of geocaching is really the only 'proper' way to participate, while simultaneously and condescendingly whining about not being adequately entertained by every cache hide that receives the privilege of their attention. I believe such attitudes almost always spring from an abnormal level of insecurity on their part, but that's just my theory. Geocaching attitudes tend to mirror the attitudes of the general population. Usually that’s a good thing, but sometimes it’s a bad thing. Nothing will change that – it is inherent human nature. My advice is to completely ignore the arrogant, pretentious and condescending braggers and whiners, and to simply enjoy the game in ANY guideline-compliant way in which you find enjoyment -- as long as you respect the rights of landowners, fellow cachers, etc., which I'm sure you already do. Those snobs are no better than you. (Whether they even deserve to be called your equal is debatable.) They are a loud and vocal minority, but the good news is the 'minority' part. Don’t let 'em bother you. Yeah. What he said.
  16. I knew there had to be something like this out there. Thanks

    PQ's down?

Turns out I did the same thing. Duh But I tried setting it up again and it still didn't work. Off to find some sort of detailed instructions cuz I just ain't gettin it.
  18. I don't have any videos but that's a good idea. Now that I know how to do that I'll have to give it a try. I had the perfect opportunity for a good one over the weekend when my mom and I were out caching and she picked up this thing and said "We're looking for something like this" and she was holding the actual cache in her hand and didn't even know it. It was hilarious and I wish I had it on video.
  19. That's pretty much what I do but not because I don't want to embarass myself. I'd just rather not post a bunch of logs that all say "hey I looked for it but just didn't find it" so I'll post one DNF then when I do find it I'll say how many times I was there.

    PQ's down?

I tried creating one for the first time today and nothing seemed to happen so I assume it's not working for me either. But then I have no idea what I'm doing so I could have done it wrong I guess.
  21. I got the general idea though Good luck and I hope you win!

    What GPS

How did you find one without a GPS?? It can be done by utilizing all the tools available to us. I've found a few without using a GPS but using other tools, tips in the cache, reading cache logs that others have posted, and the satellite view. My mom actually had 2 FTFs without using her GPS (yay mom). But anyway .... I have a Garmin Venture HCx and it works great for me. It has a color screen that I find much easier to see than the black and grey one of the first GPS I tried and returned. Although it goes to a dark blue and white display at night which I find kind of annoying. I do love that it has a USB cord which makes it super easy to quickly download coordinates. Good luck! Hey bugg mine has settings in setup menu for day night and automatic where you can change the color's to be both the same or whatever you like. but i only have the legenend cx. Hey thanks! I figured that mine does as well but I just haven't gotten off my butt to find the manual and figure out how to switch it so that it's all light all the time. Thanks for the motivation.

  25. I'm so glad that you asked this! I noticed the same comments over the last 2 days or so and have been wondering the same thing. I have an iPod mini and it would be nice if it would serve another purpose.
