  1. My first 140 caches was found with a Nüvi but since I got my Legend HCx the Nüvi usually stays in the car. I wouldn't want to be without it though as I use it for paperless geocaching, including spoilerpics. I recommend using my custom vehicle: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=213782 My custom vehicle makes it much easier to cache with the map mode. Although my GPS do have the satellite screen I did prefer using the map. Configure the map to 2D-mode and north up. That works best when searching for caches. Also do not trust the direction of the vehicle when walking. At slow speeds it is often not correct. Turning on visible tracks makes it easier to see the direction you move. Also, important. Pedestrian mode and off-road navigation once out of the car or you will not have much fun geocaching. In car-mode it will try to lock your position to the nearest road and that will make caching with the map screen a real pain. Do also try to hold the GPS vertical if possible and try not to cover to much of the backside with your hand. Doing this will increase your reception and give you a more accurate position.
  2. 500 if stored as waypoints and no known limit if stored as POIs.
  3. Yes, I've tried to get answers to technical questions and actually got really stupid answers. I'm pretty sure that the support is outsourced to a call center with limited technical skills. If you have a problem, the can follow a troubleshooting flowchart that probably ends in "Upgrade firmware", "Factory reset" or "Replace the GPS". If your problem can be solved by any of these three solution or any other "standard procedure" that they recognize, then fine, the support will be good and you'll be satisfied. If not, well, then you'll propably better off getting help here on in any other GPS-related forums on the net.
  4. Shouldn't be a problem. I've owned a Nüvi 205 and I now have a 255T and they have both included menus and voices for a LOT of languages. On my 255 I have removed most of the languages in order to make room for large .POI files but I have still have a backup of the contents of my Nüvi 205 and from what I can see it supported 40 different languages although it was a regional model (only had nordic maps).

  6. I pretty sure that you just have to turn on the basemap again. Let's see if I remember how to do it without digging out my GPS. - Switch to map screen. - Press menu button once (the button below the zoom buttons). - Choose Map settings - Choose the setting which shows the installed maps. I think it has a an "i" symbol. - Press menu button once - Select "Show basemap"
  7. How come that this product sheet: http://www.mygeomate.com/GeoMateJr_Product_Sheet.pdf and this QuickStart: http://www.mygeomate.com/quick_start_guide.pdf doesn't even mention geocaching.com or anything about logging online? And in the UsersGuide (who reads it anyway?): http://www.mygeomate.com/GeomatejrUsersGuide.pdf it is mentioned in a copyright message on page 3, mentioned briefly on page 16 and the twice on page 20. Not much of the online part of geocaching is explained. I find this very strange since getting the priviligie of being a geocacher for me meant that I had to agree to the "TERMS OF USE" for geocaching.com, create an account and even then, get a message about a disclaimer that I need to agree to on every single cache I view. Does this disclaimer not apply to those who bought a Geomate.jr? Perhaps a similar disclaimer is shipped with the product? Some kind of activation system where you needed to create a geocaching.com account before activation your Geomate.jr would have forced the new Geomate.jr owner to become more aware of what Geocaching is before they head out for their first find. As I cache owner I want cache finds on my caches to be logged online and I want to know that the ones that find it have a basic knowledge of geocaching. Luckily I live in Sweden and are not (yet?) affected by this product.
  8. I wonder what the next step will be? Deleting all GPS related threads that are not about Geomate.jr? I'm not so sure that I like where this is going...
  9. Didn't even need to generate new maps or vandalize my Mapsource setup. Found out that gmaptool was capable of removing the old keys and putting new ones in. No beep for me.
  10. I have all the Swedish caches in GSAK and I use lot of PQ:s to get them all (using a schedule based on published date). It takes about a week to get the whole lot of it so I do not do that very often. However I do have another PQ with my 500 closest caches that I run every day. If I've found ones that are further away, then I just download them manually or run the "My finds" query. I always try to make sure that GSAK is up-to-date with my latest finds. I then re-run the macro several times a week, or in fact, the macros because I run another macro for my Legend HCx. Sure, it takes some time to run the macros but if I am in a hurry then I use a GSAK filter to just filter out my 700-800 nearest caches.
  11. Source? Just to prove this wrong I will backup my MapSource keys from the registry, google for a keymaker, generate a new key, generate a new (but small, to save time) map (backing up my old one first) and try. And for having the same bug... I'm pretty sure those two firmwares share most of their code. First the 60CSx got support for maps larger than 2Gb, then the eTrex followed and inherited the same (buggy) code. Because they are not unusable to most people. It is when you get a problem that you search the forums for someone having the same issue and posts about it. But I do agree that Garmin should have done more testing before letting this out the door and perhaps even pull it back and fix it.
  12. Well, while you may think that "this is as good as it gets", it can actually be even better. I used that macro for quite a while but now I use the Advanced Nuvi Macro by jjreds01 which works together with the spoilersync macro. I now can not only choose the order of the information (I have the hint first, then the last 5 logs and lastly the description) but I also have the spoilerpics for all caches. I currently have 14000-15000 caches with hints, 5 last logs, full description AND spoilerpic in my Nüvi 255. And for the original question, I found my first 140+ caches with a Nüvi. It's not as bad as some may think if you use it right.
  13. There is no compass screen on the Nüvis (Except for the crossover models 500/550). You must also change the navigation mode to off-road to stop this behaviour.
  14. Actually, it's easy to find out if it is maprelated. Just disable "Friluftskartan Pro" and just use the basemap. I know, it sucks, but just for a while to see if the problem goes away. If that helps, then lets have a look at the settings. This is my settings (in swedish): Riktning: Norr upp Autozoom: Till Detaljer: Normal Lås på väg: Från I have not had any issues with Friluftskartan Pro on my Legend HCx, but on my Nüvi it totally locks the map in certain areas. However, I've not visited those areas since I got the Legend HCx so I do not yet know how it will behave when I do.
  15. I recommend that you have a look at GSAK. Import all your PQ:s to GSAK and the export the data to both your Legend HCx and to Cachemate from it. The more you work with GSAK, the more you will wonder how you managed to be without it before. I'm using a Nüvi 255 for car navigation and the paperless part (even spoilerpics) but also saves the most important information to my HCx (Terrain, difficulty, size, type and hint). This is done with the help of two GSAK macros and I use the very useful filter functions in GSAK to choose what to export. I also use a combination of two GSAK macros to upload detailed statistics to my geocaching.com profile with just one mouseclick. You can try it out for free but the nagscreens and timeouts will increase so after a month or so you propably will have to pay the $25 that it costs if you want to stay sane. But it's well worth they money imho.
  16. I assume you are in Sweden, just like me. As others have said the 60Cx is what you should be comparing with the Legend HCx. Still the price difference is still almost 1000 SEK on most places. You can get the Legend HCx for ~1700 SEK and the 60Cx for ~2700 SEK. Featurewise these two should be exactly the same. Physical layout differ though, like button placing, screen size etc... The 60Cx (and 60CSx) however have a reputation of being the most accurate Garmin you can get. But is it worth the difference in price? I think not and therefor I got myself a Legend HCx and I'm very satisfied with it so far. But once you have decided between the eTrex or the Gpsmap series you will face the next decision. Do you want to pay extra for an electronic compass?
  17. Just for those of you that do not allready now. You can use the Advanced Nuvi macro (for GSAK) to keep a lot (unlimited?) of caches as POIs to overcome the 2000 cache limit (yes, it supports Oregon although it is mostly used for Nüvis). You propably still want to use the built in paperless functions for the closest 2000 caches though but it cannot hurt to have 10000 or more POIs available just in case.
  18. Long answer High sensitivity means you will get satellite lock even in dense forests and sometimes even inside buildings. It has nothing to do with WAAS. WAAS contains of geostationary satellites positioned over the equator. By having reference stations placed in different places around the North America (in the case of WAAS) these reference stations can measure the "error" in the satellite signals it recieves from the GPS satellites. Corrections to these errors are transmitted to your GPS through these WAAS satellites (which also happens to double as GPS satellites) and makes it possible to increase the accurancy of your calculated position. It does however, not make your GPS more sensitive, just more accurate. Living the UK however will make WAAS useless for you, but do not despair. WAAS is for the people "over there" while we in Europe has our own system called EGNOS that works just the same. Normally (always?) a WAAS enabled GPS supports EGNOS aswell. Short answer Get a high sensitive GPS. But do consider a Venture HC or even a Legend HCx because at some point, you are going to want maps.
  19. A small, transparent, plastic bag can do miracles... If are on a tight budget a cheap, simple, Nüvi will work fine to start with. I started that way and recently bought a Legend HCx to use when I leave the car.
  20. I'm using this as "Waypoint name" when I use "Send to GPS" from GSAK: %Smart=9(%Dif/%Ter/%con1) I also have "Maxium characters" set to 20. In the long run though you may want to consider using one of the fine GSAK macros made for paperless Nüvicaching. I'm using the advanced macro and spoilersync to make sure I have everything I need in my Nüvi.
  21. The cheapest would be a Nüvi 200, but I'd still recommend to spend the extra dollars for a 205. The 205 is quicker to lock onto satellites and also have a (hidden) satellite screen where you can view your accurancy. I've found 140+ caches with Nüvi 205 (and a 255 which works just the same). Just make sure you don't take it out in the rain. It is not waterproof.
  22. Updated my Legend HCx yesterday, found 3 caches this morning. Everything seems to work just like it did before the upgrade. EDIT: Forgot to mention. The "D":s are still there and only the software were upgraded. GPS SW is still on 2.80.
  23. Doing that can trigger a hole in space and time and suck you out of existence (as we know it).
  24. I suppose you have tried the WebUpdater? It should say that you allready have the latest software and ask if you want to check for additional updates. The GPS firmware is propably an additional update. I have not done this with my Legend HCx as it came with 2.8/2.8 but I think that is how it is supposed to work.
