  1. Well, they did create quite a buzz. Now the entire country knows about that cartoon where before I doubt 1 percent would be able to tell you about it. I think the Boston authorities went waaay overboard with this. But if you have ever heard their Mayor talk, you'd know he's not the brightest LED on the device. All the overreacting in Boston was, IMHO, just him showboating for the rest of the world, like he's trying to say "look how seriously we take the threat of terrorism". Not that it shouldn't be taken seriously, but someone in authority should be able to tell the difference between an LED attached to a couple of Duracells and an actual explosive device. P.S. I bet you'd be shocked to find that not all art students are "stoners". And I've met a lot of people that shocked me to find out they were stoners.
  2. I found the camo duct tape at Walmart in the painting aisle with all the other tape. Less than 4 bucks a roll.
  3. I agree that we can look pretty unusal walking around staring at electronic devices and turning over old logs in the woods. So I can understand when a cop might want to ask a few questions, but after giving my name and a brief explanation of what I'm doing, I expect said officer to leave me alone. And in most cases that will happen. A few minutes is all it should take. But they do not need to ask me my life story. And they do not need to be holding me prisoner while they run my name through the system. I did nothing illegal, and I should not be considered a suspect for a crime that has not been committed.
  4. Commissar, I have that same cover and I got mine at Best Buy for about 15 bucks. The only thing I don't like about it is I have to remove the cover to hook up any cables.
  5. I find it hard to believe that the people that really want to do something like plant a bomb or get info on certain structures would be doing it out in the open with a GPS in their hand. Sure, if the cops feel you are suspicious, they can ask for my name, but they better be ready to respect my rights as an American at the same time. I hate being made to feel like I'm guilty when I haven't been doing anything wrong. Odd maybe, but not illegal.
  6. What are the maximum dimensions for an avatar? I know the site will resize them, but that sometimes distorts them. I'd rather have an av that won't get shrunk.
  7. I've had my Pungo on the Chesapeake Bay a couple of times and I've taken it down the James and Rivanna rivers. No problems during any of those trips. Of course, I'm not braving an ocean storm or doing whitewater on the rivers, just some smaller rapids that I felt comfortable with given the limits of my experience and design of my kayak. I know it isn't built for certain conditions, but to call it nothing more than a "pool toy" and not a "real" kayak is insulting. When I am on the water with the paddles in my hand deciding whether to go to the right of the big rock in the river or the left, I am a real kayaker. Do you have the same attitude toward GPS recievers? Are the yellow garmins nothing more than "toys" and the people that use them aren't "real" geocachers? I see your point about doing more than your equipment is built for, but if you use the equipment within it's limits, you are every bit as "real" as the guy who is capable of doing more with better equipment..
  8. I have a Wilderness Systems "Pungo" kayak. It has a larger than usual cockpit wich is easier for me to get in and out of since I'm 6'4". Mine is a few years old, but the new ones come with storage hulls and a better seat. Might have to upgrade soon myself. But it tracks great and gets in some seriously shallow water. I love it.
  9. Bought my Sporttrak map just before X-mas of 2003. Just checked Wheresmyrebate.com and they approved it on the 20th of this month. Hope they mail the check soon.
  10. The sporttrak map gives an altimeter reading, but I think it's based on satellite signals not air pressure. I don't know how accurate it is as I've never checked it. One feature I do like is the northfinder on the sporttrak. If you're standing still, you just line up the picture of the sun on the gpsr screen with the sun in the sky, and you know where north is. That has always been dead on accurate for me. It also shows the waypoint in relation to that. Don't know if the garmins have anything like that.
  11. Hey Jackdp, I read an article online the other day about the new Toyota Prius that parallell parks itself. you just get it started and it does the rest.
  12. Heheheh. I too was in the same boat last month when I was looking. I liked the look and feel of the Legend, and the screen resolution is supposedly better, but I decided on the Sporttrak Map in the end. Two main reasons I chose that one. First, all my research led me to believe that the antenna is more receptive in the Sporttrak, and so far I've had no trouble with it. However, I never tried the legend, so I don't know how well it works. Secondly, the Sporttrak floats. I go kayaking, and I want to make sure if it falls into the water, I don't have to go diving for it. I thought the buttons would be kind of bulky and in the way, but they really aren't. I also got the carrying case and that protects the screen. So there you have it. One recommendation for the Sporttrak.
