Yet another wrinkle...I found a moving cache a while back, logged it and sent it on its way. Later when I wanted to make a cache map of all the places I had cached, using my "found" list, my map included California, a place I had never cached. This was due to the traveling caches new location. Hard to make that work out well...I think. I like the concept of the traveling cache, and even tried to make one myself,The baby bär cache (GCMHFQ)was supposed to be moved to a new location to welcome new cachers to the world, but alas the forums were filled with RAGE over the fact that I had tried to skirt the rules. I was unaware at the time of the moving cache prohibition. But I was educated very quickly! I personally would rather see moving caches make a comeback than that those dreadful Wherigo things continue to exist. Just my $.02 Happy Trails! Rixart

How about the "fake" geocoin. It comes with several paper copies that you place in caches to rack up miles, while you keep the real one in your collection. That way you can have your cake and eat it too!

I have two takes on the subject. First; I also find "fake" or "proxy" geocoins very unpleasant and feel that they encourage, or at the minimum enable, theft. To those who don't understand how, here is a brief description of how at least one theft occurred. A "coin thief" (aka scumbag) notices a coin has been dropped into a cache in his/her vicinity, the thief then travels to the cache as quickly as possible, takes the coin and does not log either the cache or the coin. The thief then makes a copy and places the copy in the cache and keeps the real coin in his/her collection. Sometimes copies can travel for months until someone informs the owner that the coin has been replaced with a copy, thereby hiding the location of the coin thief. That is how that works. Second; I created a Geocache, "The Fake Geocoin and TB Graveyard" as a place where people could drop off unwanted "fake" or "proxy" geocoins. It is also a place where people could bury their lost TB's, IF AND ONLY IF, they made a visit to the cache location. Many people disliked this cache and it's theme. There is NOTHING in the cache. It is meant to represent the dissapointment of finding a "fake" coin or losing a TB. There are currently NO fakes in the cache. Someone keeps removing them, without logging a visit, and someone also killed a small animal and put it in the cache to show their displeasure at the cache theme. The end result of creating this cache is that there are far fewer "fakes" in the cache vicinity, and none in any of my other caches. I also now have some very interesting insight into the behavior and ethics of some creators of "fakes". That's my 2 cents worth.

The simplest method is to spell out the co-ordinates and ROT-13 them. You could even supply them with a ROT-13 list if you dont want to make it too hard. I recently discovered this cache. GC168QC $3 parking fee, and $10 to find the cache. It is expressedly FORBIDDEN to find the cache without making an appointment and paying the fee. Isn't that the definition of "caches of a commercial nature" ?

I have placed several caches on private property with reasonable success. This is my general formula... Try to make an appointment for your meeting, don't just walk in expecting to get a chance to explain the game. Just after lunch is usually better than just before. A person doing the explaining will probably have a better chance than an e-mail or written request. Print out extra copies of the "You found it!" notice to show/give them as well as the CITO notices on the website. Explain that they can expect an increase in visitors, but that geocaches are by definition, non-commercial. Have a cache container ready to go, stocked with a few quality trade goods. Make sure the container has something like "Official Geocache Game Piece" written clearly on the outside. Not everyone wants an ammocan on their property, have some tupperware/lock'n'lock, film canisters, or other container(depending on the type of cache) to show them as well. Be friendly, and be prepared to smile, shake hands, thank them for their time, and leave if they say "No." Leave the literature with them as well as your contact information. They may need time to think about it or discuss it with others. Finally, my real secret... I bring my 6- and 3-year old children along for the interview/request, and discuss how Geocaching is a family friendly game. It works nearly every time. Happy Trails! Rixart

I think some of you don't understand. This was not someone placing roadkill in the cache. This person killed and mutilated a small animal, then stuffed it into the cache and logbook. I went online to find out what to do, who to notify about this sociopath. I wrongly assumed that Geocachers were a little more socially responsible sort of person. Most responders told me to ignore it or poked fun. When this kind of action is dismissed or made light of, it can rapidly become common behavior. Sick people "win" when even moderators/authorities don't take their actions seriously. The cache was located in a small nature preserve behind a church where my son goes to daycare. I suppose I should have had less of an emotional response, and try to find some humor in the situation as many of you have. I just can't. Thank you to the few that cared enough not to make jokes. Coming to the forums with this issue was a waste of time. I now know what to expect in the future.

Obviously, very few people in the forum think this is worth serious discussion. My fault I suppose. I did not want to implicate anyone by revealing too many details. A moderator has suggested that I forward all evidence and correspondence to Groundspeak .com and let them handle it from here. I agree. However... I want the deplorable person who did this to know: I know who you are. I will let Groundspeak know who you are as well. I will mention you and your actions to every geocacher I know, except you. I will replace the cache as many times as you defile it. I was not harmed by your actions, another geocacher was. You have spoiled the game for somone other than myself. Didn't you think that perhaps a family with a child would find it? Is YOUR family proud of what you have done? I hope that retrieving your "fake/copy/proxy" was worth it. I pity you. You need help.

Recently somone placed a mutilated dead animal in one of my caches. (GC14EG1) I believe it was done by a certain Geocacher who disliked the cache theme. What now? I welcome any reasonable suggestions. Rixart

I will not berate you for your opinion, you are entitled to it, but I find it totally hypocritical when you only have three activated coins and only one of those is travelling, if you feel so strongly send out some coins yourself and allow others to play the way they want to. In my opinion the only lame copies are copies that are done poorly, done well they can look just as good as the real thing in an airtight capsule. So hypcocrasy is determined by how much money I am willing to spend on a game? I cannot have an opinion without spending as much as who? You? You say you will not berate me, and in the same breath call my actions hypocritical.

Please READ the above posts. I am NOT a thief. I am NOT stopping their travel. I am NOT removing them from circulation. I am NOT preventing anyone from moving the FAKE geocoins. I am expressing MY opinion about FAKES with this listing. I was tired of finding FAKES when I expected a real coin. Is a little HONESTY too much to ask from Geocachers? Is it so difficult to write COPY in the coin name? I simply made a place where FAKES is what one could expect to find. There are no living TBs in the cache. There are rarely any FAKES in the cache. I see it as no worse than a TB hotel requiring that cachers trade 1 for 1 TBs. Some TBs get stranded for a long time because of these rules. Or that a "themed" cache asks that you trade only a certain type of item "dog toys" or "Star Wars". People are free to choose to follow the cache theme or not. The only TBs that are placed in the cache are "dead" TBs that the owner places there themselves(clearly stated on the cache page). I do not follow up to make sure that all the FAKES remain in the cache. They do get removed, usually in the next day or so. I really don't care. What does bother me is the people who STEAL the cache container just to "get even" for my placing the cache. And of course the people who threaten physical violence for somone "just mentioning "TB/ Geocoin Graveyard caches" " I don't tell you how to play the game or threaten you with violence. I have had several people attempt to place a "dead" Jeep in the graveyard and they recieved a stern e-mail from me directing them to re-read the cache page! Coin copies are easy to recognize, and no one actually prevents anyone from moving them. The tone of your post makes it seem that you would gladly ignore the theme, or vandalize or steal my cache, as others have done in the past. I did not sayI was, or act surprised when my cache was stolen. I assumed that some Geocacher like you, who disagreed with me, had done it, and felt justified in the theft. I recognize your right to do so, but I disagree with the choice. "Wanting to do something and actually doing it are not the same thing".....I don't normally resort to this particular source, but check with the Bible on that one. That's just awful! What gives you the right to stop TBs and coins from traveling? You say in your description "Once a coin has gone in, only the owner should retrieve it." You might as well just take them and throw them in the trash because some of those TBs could be traveling from thousands of miles away. I should be amazed that this cache was approved, but very little surprises me at this point. I promise you this... if I'm ever in the area, I'll collect them all and set them loose to travel again and I encourage others to do the same. Not everyone plays the game your way and you shouldn't have the right to ruin it for them. Shame on you and anyone who throws a replicate in your cache that they don't personally own. I created a fake Geocoin graveyard here in ATL. People can put all the fakes/copies/proxies that they find, in there. Since that time, most of the fakes have dissapeared from this area. If there were a fake/copy/proxy Geocoin graveyard in every large city, I think the number of fakes out there would dwindle rapidly. Any fakes found in any of my caches will immediately go to the graveyard. I don't want the icon from fakes(but I do like icons), I don't want to move them(but I have), I also don't have the right to destroy them. I just want them to go away. Happy Trails! Rixart

Hi all. I recently had a cache of mine "cleaned up" by a prisoner work crew in a county park. Just by chance, a local cacher was in the park, He had already solved the puzzle and saw the work crews and knew approximately where the cache was. He got permission to retrieve the cache and returned it to me. Thanks Stieet! Not only did he have the cache in hand, but he prevented it's loss. I encouraged him to log it as a find. Yet, He still has not logged it as a find, because he wants to "find " it. For all that, he is now mentioned on the cache page. I also had somone write a unfriendly note about another cache that it was "not worth the smiley" and "will be put on my ignore list" . I thought they were very rude comments for somone who "didn't feel like bushwhacking". I chose to ask them to delete their log or make it a DNF. They deleted it. Now, after much thought, I'm considering replacing their log quoted, as a note from me. That's the honor system as it concerns Geocaching. To each his own. Happy Trails! Rixart

Thank you all for your replies and opinions. After reviewing it all, and sleeping on it, I have come to the following conclusions... I assumed that ignore lists were personal/private and a veteran cacher publicly stating on the cache page that they have placed a cache on their ignore list is an indictment of the cache or cache hider. I assumed that a veteran cacher publicly stating on the cache page that it's "Just not worth the smiley" was also an indictment of the cache or cache hider. I assumed that a veteran cacher would see that the above mentioned note could be interpereted as negative and might discourage others from hunting the cache. I objected to the cacher publicly stating these things on the cache page. If they want to put my caches on an ignore list, that's fine. If they don't think this cache is worth their effort, that's fine. In conclusion, maybe my skin is a bit too thin, and I should keep a little more perspective. I apparently should make fewer assumptions. It is, after all, just a game. Again, thank you all for your opinions. Especially those with which I disagreed.

AG, I brought it here, because I wanted opinions. Several thought I over-reacted, several thought I was justified in my opinion. I had a question and I thought here was the best place to get answers. I got lots of answers, thank you all. As to the question of depth, the water was ankle deep when the cache was placed. It varies from day to day, up to knee deep. after rain. Depending upon WHERE one attempts to cross. If one doesn't "feel like bushwackin" then a note on the page seems rude to me, that's all. I have avoided many caches that I didn't feel were worth the physical or mental effort (at the time), but I certainly would not leave a public note saying they weren't worth a smiley. I don't even have an ignore list. I guess that's just where we differ. Rixart
