  1. On Banknotes. Although referred to as 'Sterling', have you noticed that the word 'Sterling' does not appear on any Bank of England Notes? Just a thought.
  2. I wonder if we could start a rumour on the net that there will soon be a shortage of Kidney Beans and see people panic buying them? I think the British public are generally quite stupid and this petrol carry on helps prove it.
  3. There are no cultural barriers to geocaching, maybe some financial barriers. So I would agree with you Paul, that Geocaching can not be accused of racism. There are lots of vocations and pastimes that are particularly biased towards certain types of people and I think it just takes someone to 'discover' them and their peers will follow. My occupation is largely dominated by white males. There are no barriers to entry and the company I work for advertises vacancies in all the relevant publications to reach other demographics. But still the uptake is very low. We are getting more girls/women/ladies (choose your preferred address) which is nice. However, of about 400 people doing the job I do in the place I work, we have no Black people and I think only 2 Asian. My guess is that once we have a few role models, more people will follow. I would say the same of Geocaching in the UK.
  4. What's the point in this thread? If you cache around Central to South England, the people you are going to meet are very likely to fit your description (if you are comfortable putting people you don't know into a 'class'). If you go to Scotland I'm sure most cachers will only fit one of your stated demographics - although the personality traits are spot on .
  5. Do you play for where you're from or where you live now? I'm a Jock living on the South coast. Unless it's against the rules I'm going to play for the Northeners.............
  6. If you are flying to Dublin, there is a TB hotel a short walk from the terminal. It is right next to the Holiday Inn
  7. Sad news. I'd like to add my condolences. radar
  8. .....or is he just pleased to see his new wife?
  9. I can just imagine the local council meetings "Ze english touriztz have stolen our f*cking sign again!"
  10. I know what you mean. I posted a very similar question recently elsewhere. It was only after I had written it down and got a couple of responses that I realised how obvious the answer was! I suppose that's the real value of forums like this. Keep on caching
  11. spindlewood I had the same problem with another source of coordinates. Then it dawned on me - doh! - that the position format needed to be the same in each case (of course) It was multimap that I had the problem with, but it looks like they use the same format as streetmap. In this case N52:42:35,E000:25:05 is actually position format hddd mm' ss.s not hd mm.mmm that you are using on your GPSr. So if you want to enter the coordinates that you took on your GPSr to multimap/streetmap simply change the position format on your unit to hddd mm' ss.s and then view the waypoint to see the conversion. In the example you gave the coordinates are N52 42'20.8" W000 25'03.2" So you should enter N52:42:21 W000:25:03 You can also do the calculation yourself - the N52 42 bit doesn't change, but you have to change the decimal part to seconds - so take the .346 and multiply by 60 (0.346 x 60) and you get 20.76 so your Northing becomes N52 42 20.76, you then have to round up or down. hope this helps radar
  12. Can I have the record for being the least interested in numbers? Or can I just say LOOK AT ME!
  13. I thought American Psycho was good!
  14. harold1066 Up until recently getting an iPAQ, I had been using my revo plus for paperless caching. Great because I didn't really care whether it got bashed or not. Get a free copy of mobipocket reader and you can get your pocket queries in ebook format. You will get the cache description, a couple of previous logs and an appendix with decrypted clues. You can then make your cache notes with the notepad or word function and copy them over when you sync the PDA. You can also use the OPERA secure web browser (from the psion cd) and an IR connection to a mobile phone to get an internet connection 'in the field'. It is quite slow though. Don't think you can use any mapping software or connect your GPSr to it (although there is a serial connector, I don't think there is any software available - I searched for a long time) radar
  15. Here is my tuppence worth. I use a similar setup to dogastus. except for the GPSr used. I have a yellow etrex that I have been using for caching. I bought an IPAQ 2210, which has plenty of connectivity. 256MB SD card Data cable for IPAQ-ETREX which also provides power from car socket. TOMTOM navigator GPXSonar ARKON vent mount. A very tidy, simple setup, and I can use the etrex to provide the signal for TOMTOM. It works very well (typically 7-10 satellites from the dashboard of my GOLF) and I didn't have to buy another GPSr. Once TOMTOM has me at the parking place, I put the data cable away and the ETREX gets me to the cache (much more rugged than walking around with IPAQ in hand). I log the find on my IPAQ with GPXSonar. I don't use topo maps (yet) on the IPAQ. I just keep a paper map in the rucky if I think I will need it. **NB - By the way, DIXONS - airside in Heathrow airport are selling the 2210 for £198 - way cheaper than anywhere else and you can buy from there even on UK flights - departure and arrival) and Expansys are quite cheap for SD cards, although not the fastest SD cards around Cheers radar
  16. I think I will be there also. Around 2ish if it's not too late
  17. This is why GPS isnt approved for precision navigation on airliners. Imagine an aircraft using GPS as a landing aid at Heathrow. Could have landed in Bristol City centre! (not necessarily a bad thing mind!)
  18. That sounds uncomfortable
  19. excellent! Is it possible to buy tomtom maps without having to buy their gps receiver too? I have only found the receiver and maps bundled. cheers radar2001
  20. Hello Im interested in how you are using the etrex/ipaq. Are you using the GPSr to provide position information to the ipaq in the same way as using a GPS sleeve would do?? If so that's great because I am hoping to buy an ipaq and hook up my yellow etrex to use as in car navigation Or are you just swapping waypoint information back and forth? thanks RADAR2001
