I don't use a GPS and I've found some caches in Newport News. Of the caches I can remember there, the easiest to find without a GPS is False Alarm (GCMT4B). Between the aerial photo on Mapquest and the Birds Eye view on Mappoint, this should be an easy one. The parking lot and field edge are clear on the photos and the cache itself is easy to find once there. It's clearly a drive-by. Alternately, I own two letterbox hybrids in Newport News Park (Find My Shirt GC1FG10 and Find My Pants GCY0BW) that are cross listed on the letterboxing sites with text clues. You could follow the text clues to make the find and place the TB. The only downside if your time is limited is that these letterboxes have a minimum of a mile hike.

I only use maps and aerial photos to find caches. I've found that Mapquest is usually the most accurate of the mapping sites that are linked on the cache pages. Everything else seems to be just a little off.

There is a log on Atlasquest indicating that the stamp was present on May 15. This letterboxer (like most) handcarves her stamps and I'm sure she'd like it back in the letterbox. It might be cool if you would review the logbook and see if you can figure out who might have accidently taken the stamp and help see to its return.

Restricted (on Atlasquest) means that the hider has blocked the clue to non-letterboxers. This is done primarily so that the clue isn't available to non-boxers who might not understand letterboxing and therefore plunder the boxes. How's that for irony? The OP should return the letterbox and yield the spot to the letterboxer who has been in that place for almost 33 months and find a new spot for his cache.

The Jekyll Island Authority seems to welcome geocaching. The ones I've found on the island were quite fun. They range from a couple of drive-bys to beach hikes of up to a mile round trip.

Despite taking the race info off of this TB's web page, Alan Kulwicki made it into the new Darlington goal cache, which gives us a majority (19 out of 37) of entrants through the first leg. It only took 37 months to achieve this. I'll update the scoresheet in the next few weeks.

The Darlington cache is going to be on the disabled list for a bit longer, so let's use Old School, a cache a couple miles east of the track in town, as a goal cache there. At least for now.

James River Face Wilderness in Virginia went 40 months between finds at one point and is now 18 months without a visitor.

Redwing Park across from Boneshakers has five. This one is just off the front parking lot. The other four can be reached with about a KM of total walking from one parking lot or another. The one just outside the park looks like an easy micro too.

I think I can see this cache in the aerial photo on Mapquest. The stone hiding a front yard cache to the southwest also shows up.

Most moderately serious orienteers can walk and read a map at the same time. The hot shots (like Ed ) can read and run at the same time. Obviously, you're not staring at the map the whole time, just glancing at it long enough to get the info you need.

You learned about the letterbox when you found it and took the photograph. In this case, the geocacher learned of the letterbox when she found it in the field and she still placed her geocache on top of it. Literally on top. Fair play suggests that if you find a letterbox (listed letterbox, or unlisted letterbox, or a terracache, or a navicache) in one tree, you would select a different tree to hide your geocache. The fact that this geocacher failed to do that is the basis of the conflict. The fact that she ridicules letterboxers for objecting in her log book and the fact that she continues to try to justify her actions is the reason this discussion has been prolonged.

Brian, I disagree with your interpretation. If the point of the thread is to discuss ways that geocachers and letterboxers can avoid stepping on each other's toes, then challenging a cacher who is bragging about hijacking a letterbox location is not only relevant, it's neccesary. I searched and I haven't found anything that contradicts Brian from that earlier thread. Do you have a link to information that contradicts this now? The fact that there were (and still are) geocaches and letterboxes on Trustees land that predates your permission effort (a fact that you excluded when you sought advice in that earlier thread) speaks to the fact that permission in some form existed before you got started. The letterboxer had exactly as much permission as you did when you took her spot. The length of your odyssey of making contacts doesn't change that, and it doesn't justify what you did. Taking a letterbox location in the manner that you did shows an incredible lack of respect for other park users. That's a reputation that geocaching can do without. I believe that geocaching is fortunate that the letterboxers limited their protests to the logbooks and forums. They could have protested your lack of respect and fair play to the Trustees management, and who knows where that would have led. Moldy geocaches are an aberration too, but they're out there. Trying to help with the condition of that letterbox is a good thing, and so was the geo-litter run that you made a couple of weeks ago. But your good deeds do not excuse your blatant foul. If they did, I wouldn't press this discussion.

AW, you are the one complaining about letterboxers' attitude. You are the one who said that all the snot flies from letterboxers to geocachers. Would you not agree that hijacking a letterbox location without justification at least constitutes snot flying from a geocacher to letterboxers? If you don't want people to post about your unsportsmanlike actions, don't commit any and don't brag about them in a public forum. Ignoring people who call you out for being wrong doesn't change the fact that you were wrong. One of the purposes of this forum is discussing how geocaching should be played. Calling out bad examples of game play, especially when the player is bragging about what they did in the forum, is a topic that I'm not going to stop typing about. You earned a measure of respect a few weeks ago by cleaning up some geo-litter in your region. I hope you can discuss your actions in Bird Park in a manner that doesn't lose that same respect. You mentioned "pretty inflammatory words" in your post. Please identify them for me. I do wish to keep this discussion to your actions at Bird Park, and how harmful they are to geocaching as a whole, and not go beyond that.

There are four letterboxes still listed in that park that are older than the one you hijacked. It only took a couple minutes of surfing to find other letterboxes and geocaches planted in other Trustee parks before then as well. "Adequate permission" is debated from time to time, but seeing four letterboxes in a public (non-governmental, but still public) park and without a contrary policy statement implies adequate permission to me. I suspect that the letterboxer you poached on would agree. I disagree that you needed to go through a drawn out process of written permission. I disagree that the letterboxers needed shielding. I disagree that the process of getting written permission excuses your unsportsmanlike act of hijacking the letterbox location. I quite sure that if a letterboxer had hijacked one of your locations, you'd have been as equally upset as they were.

I think a plurality of us have found bug spray in a cache when it was needed. I last happened to me a couple weeks ago. On a road trip, I didn't notice that a clothespin had fallen out until I repacked and rehid the cache. Rather than reopen the cache, I took it. That night, I needed an object to seal a gap in the motel curtains and the clothespin came in handy. On a hot day (or even a cold day), finding a Wheres George bill to convert into a beverage is almost as good as finding a beverage.

This speaks pretty well to the reviewer's integrity. Some research by forum participants (that the OP should have done himself) showed the cache was legal, and it was published despite the OP's display of unsportsmanlike conduct in this forum. A reviewer with less intergrity would have held it up for some other reason (perhaps a stricter interpretation of the maintainable distance rule) to payback the OP.

Yet another Milwaukee goal cache has been archived. I loaded up the Google maps and the nearest full sized cache to the start-finish line is After School Cache. A link is below. It seems a little closer that the ones we were using previously and it's in a different park in a different direction that the others. Hopefully, this will work out for us. In looking over the TB pages, there are only three or four of us who are still maintaining them as far as the race and its goals. I'm rethinking the effort of a web page, in favor of just using this thread for the amusement of the four of us who are still following things. Truex is headed for Milwaukee, so fishhook especially needs to make note of the new goal cache there. I'm gathering materials for all three backup cars. Moise was taken unlogged while in second place. Marcis and Trickle were in caches that were stolen. I noticed that the Terry Labonte TB has been released after being held for 14 months. My guess is that unless it is gated off you can still access it and the worst that would happen is if there is still a ranger on duty you would get warned. I can't speak for what's being planned in New Joisey, but when the Feds went through a shutdown, they posted a ranger at the gate (law enforcement = essential) who told us that anyone caught on park land would be prosecuted for criminal tresspassing. I fear that the Jersey government is trying to make the closure as painful as possible on ordinary folks, and that would include zero tolerance in the state parks. I guess the theory is that the more suffering they can create, the more ordinary folks will call and demand some compromise. They've closed down the horse tracks and are trying to close the casinos. Why would they leave the parks accessible in this circumstance?

Once upon a time, Jeremy said he was considering establishing a letterboxing site, presumably to compete against letterboxing.org and atlasquest.com. Maybe this would be a feature that Jeremy could implement to encourage listings. Letterboxes get a 100 foot buffer if they are listed on Jeremy's site. There have been enough reports about geocachers (usually noobs, but not always) trading out stamps that plenty of letterboxers would love some mechanism of getting a buffer from caches. Kirbert's suggestion is just a matter of sharing information. If a cache and letterbox are close by, each should announce in the clues or descriptions that the other exists. That'll give everyone (especially noobs in either hobby) a chance to review proper ettiquite and sportsmanship related to the other hobby's object.
