  1. I've been using these devices for more than 6 months now. The battery life is not a lie. My eTrex SE still has the original set of Lithium AA batteries I installed when I first received it.
  2. There are multiple examples of those maps at the link provided above.
  3. 1. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. 2. inReach devices can not use GLONASS. Always the same reason. 3. GGZ are still supported by GPSMAP 67 series. 4. The GPSMAP 67 series support the new Outdoor Maps+ subscription service that provides direct to device access of many Garmin premium map products for only $49/year. 5. The GPSMAP 67 series and eTrex SE are both evolutionary developments of prior models, and both offer many improvements over their predecessors. 6. Hysteria purely for the purpose of hysteria. 7. This is a great unit and I an certain Garmin will sell countless numbers of them. I very much enjoy using mine. Many, many details about all these new models over at GPSrChive.
  4. Yes, all modern Garmin GPSr provide this functionality. On pushbutton models like the GPSMAP 66 series, this can be a very tedious and cumbersome exercise. Touchscreen models like the Oregon, Montana and eTrex Touch make this process much easier. You can log caches on the GPSr and upload them later from home on all models, while GCLive devices also offer the option of uploading them directly from the field. Please see GPSrChive > How To... > Geocache for additional details and examples.
  5. Completely normal! See GPSrChive for details.
  6. That is my Go-To app when I don't have my GPSr with me! SOOOO happy that developer keeps it available for us!
  7. Just stumbled across this information (far too late) while trying to find information for some Benchmarks I 'recovered' this weekend. I never received any announcement or notice via email etc from them, and it seems two months lead time was hardly sufficient.... I have no kind words to describe my disappointment in Groundspeak and how incredibly short sighted this decision is/was, but this is their sandbox. For those who still like to 'hunt' benchmarks, you can still load them to a Garmin GPSr to view and log 'just like geocaches' - a full tutorial is available at GPSrChive > How To... > Benchmarking.
  8. Why can you not continue to use BaseCamp? You can also remove GPX files with geocaches from the device manually, but this can be tedious, and if multiple items are contained within the same GPX file, removing that GPX file removes all items. See GPSrChive for more info.
  9. So long as you are loading the geocaches manually and never load more than 5000 at a time (sounds like it based on what you have stated above), the eTrex 32x MAY be a good choice for you. You will also be losing the touchscreen capabilities of your previous Oregon devices, so you will also have to get used to pushbuttons and a joystick. Battery life will be better and the device will fit into smaller pockets.
  10. I'll chime in.... Going from an Oregon 7x0 to an eTrex 'anything' is a huge step backwards in functionality and features. How do you normally load geocaches to your Oregon 7x0? How Many at a time? How frequently do you go geocaching? Do you always plan ahead, or are you more spontaneous? Are there any features from the Oregon 7x0 you just couldn't live without?
  11. I always load all my data to micro SD cards only for this very reason.
  12. I wasn't joking about the purchase. In fact, I also recently obtained all the newer eXplorist x10 units also. But, yes, Magellan is dead, just like all these devices. I just wanted them for my collection. Certainly no intention of using them for anything.
  13. What to do with the eXplorist 200, 210, 300, 400, 500 and 600 models I just purchased off eBay? Have not found an explorist XL I want just yet....
  14. My 66sr does not have these issues either. Sounds like you may not have the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth properly configured. Visit GPSrChive for detailed instructions.
  15. Wanted to give this app a go to see how much I liked it, but it is nothing from problems from the get go. Running it the first time after installation, the Locus app infirm me that my data is all in the wrong folder and can not be used. What data? I just opened it for the very first time. It doesn't say what data, just wants permission to move things around on my phone. Against my better judgement, I agree, but it then says it can't find my data and I need to select the circuit that has my data from an internal device folder tree. No thank you. This app is garbage, and no longer resides on my phone. Zero stars. All the apps listed at GPSrChive have been thoroughly tested, and none have issues like this.
  16. There are multiple Geocaching apps suggested at GPSrChive > How To... > Software.
  17. If the GPSMAP 64 has any geocaches loaded from a non premium geocaching member account, they will all default to this less usable format. You must clear the entire GPX directory, reboot, then carefully reload premium member GPX downloads only.
  18. To answer the actual question asked, no, there is no current direct competitor to Garmin Outdoor Handheld GPSr. They have destroyed all competitors. My first Garmin was also an Oregon x00. Then an Oregon x50. Both served me well, but I personally find no joy in using old technology, so I update to newer models quite frequently. In my opinion, there was never a more capable and greater value for the money geocaching GPSr than the Oregon 7x0. Still available as New old stock or refurbished from multiple sources. Other Garmin models offer additional features and capabilities, but the Oregon 7x0 is still an excellent solution for those who desire a rugged geocaching GPSr, not a phone. See GPSrChive for more details.
  19. Just add a short strip of soft ribbon under the batteries, perpendicular to their +- orientation, laying both ends across the top of the installed batteries, and gently tug upward when they need to be removed. You know, like almost every single electronic gadget from the 70's and 80's?
  20. Each time you power the device on, if the current date is later than the date of the last track point in the current track log recording, that track log recording is auto archived, and a new track log is started. I have never tested to see what happens if the device is powered on and recording a track log before, during, and after the stroke of midnight for the time zone the device is currently located in.
  21. Set auto archive to daily, determine the size of a daily recording and divide that into available memory.
