  1. Realistically, if this is a global thing that can't be personalized without significant overhead to the site, I'd suggest just displaying both units in all such places.
  2. It seems to me questions like this about "Who is the reviewer?" come up all the time. The feeling I get is that it is intentionally made a little difficult to figure out who the reviewer is and how to contact them so that people aren't just contacting reviewers trivially when reviewers have enough other things to do besides responding to a million litle questions. Seems like this could be a good area for some additional work to be put in on the site's backend to deal make dealing with queries like this take less effort for the reviewer -- by providing things like one-click stock answers to common questions, or fill in the blanks forms for common but slightly more involved questions, and then you could just have a "send a note to this cache's reviewer" link on the cache page without overloading reviewers with questions. Maybe even a big set of guidelines about what you should/shouldn't contact the reviewer for before it lets you send them a note, and a disclaimer stating you are not guaranteed a response from the reviewer, so if there is serious problem with the cache, you should log an SBA instead. Posting an SBA does seem to kinda be the "nuclear option" though and can generate ill-will when used trivially, so people hesitate to use it at times.

    Coins I Want...

I'm working on a design for a Washington, DC coin. If there are other DC cachers who'd like to be involved in the process, please contact me privately.
  4. Acutally, I think Secret Garden (GCA4F5) may be accessible -- or may not be, there may be steps -- but it has also been recently disabled for the winter. The Nation's Garden (GCHD5N) is the off-trail one you're thinking of I believe, which is definitely not accessible. (Disclaimer: I haven't actually visited either of these caches, just researched them for future plans.)
  5. Personally, I'm not a big fan of either dipping or it's converse -- people who log a bug but leave it in the same cache. I've logged notes on a lot of TBs to let people know that a bug is still safe and sound in a cache, but always as a note, not a retreive and release in the same cache. I don't own any TBs of my own yet, but when I do, I will specifically ask people not to do either of these on the TB page and goal sheet attached to the bug.
  6. I received a Garmin Rino 120 for Christmas and have been using it to find all my caches. The Rino models just add a Family Radio Service (FRS) radio to the GPS receiver in the same device. Pretty sure the GPS part of the Rino is (almost) identical to one of the other Garmin model lines. I already had friends and family who used FRS radios, so a Rino for me meant only one device in the field for GPS and communications with them, now if only they would get some Rinos too, we could send our positions to one another as well...
  7. In DC, Animal Crackers (GCKFX4) should be accessible if you can reach down to ground level, and Garfield Park (GCG6JX) should be accessible if you can maneuver over grass for 3-5 meters (well, and it hasn't rained recently so the ground isn't too soft and muddy), and can fully extend your arm to grab the cache container. Also, you might use Handicaching and their HandiGPX tool to add accessibility ratings to the GPX files in your pocket queries. Of course, I have no idea how complete the accessibility ratings there are for DC area caches, you may have already checked there and found them woefully incomplete!
  8. Ok, so being a n00b, I don't understand the significance of all the hidden icons on the coin... anyone care to provide details of their meaning? I'm guessing they're all representing previous things that were once part of / allowed on the geocaching.com site that aren't any more, hence "ghosts", but what exactly?
  9. Excellent ideas! I'm not sure I'm quite ready to commit to hosting an event immediately, but I'm guessing if I mull over some details for a week or two, I could post something for late February or March...
  10. Ok, so I may be a n00b, but I still know about the MD Geocaching Society, and I saw a post recently about folks in Northern VA trying to organize, but how about those cachers who actually live in DC itself? I live on Capitol Hill, and I imagine I can't be the only one here who lives in the city instead of in the 'burbs, guess my question is, are there enough DC folk who'd be interested in organizing some sort of group? Or does it make more sense to get together and form a DC-area group including the suburbs? Or just beg MGS to be a part of them (since all of present DC did used to be part of Maryland of course)? And if I wanted to organize a DC event cache sometime this spring, would people be into it? I'd certainly like to meet some other cachers! (And yes, in case you didn't figure it out from the topic description, the "typo" in the topic title is deliberate.)
  11. I too would like to see a variety of unlimited edition coins to be used as travellers. It seems every cache here in the DC area that had a coin placed in it has had the coin stolen from it, with the exception of some more difficult and obscure puzzle caches. It seems like a balance needs to be reached between coins that are ultra-rare and collectable, and letting coins get too common such that they are found in every cache. (And just as an aside, are there any gc.com-trackable geocoins out there that I could go to a web page, order today, and have in a week or two to place into a cache? usageocoins.com is between the 2005 and 2006 editions, so no coins available there, are there other virtually unlimited releases I just don't know about?)
  12. And just the other day I was thinking that a 55-gallon drum might make an interesting huge cache container... but guess I just wasn't thinking big enough!
  13. I think a well-hidden micro in an interesting location is definitely worth it! The additional "needle in a haystack" challenge of finding such a micro cache container is appealing to me. That said, I think it is a shame to use an only barely-challengingly hidden micro in a remote area where a larger cache container could easily be there instead. My understanding from the evolution of geocaching is that micro caches were really invented by folks who wanted to be able to hide caches in more urban locations where a larger container just wouldn't work.
  14. Yeah, I'm actually a bit surprised the Premium Members don't get an increased number of daily views.
  15. Er, wow... really wish people would stop making such limited edition coins. No wonder they all get stolen from caches. I'd really like to see limited collector editions, and then unlimited (or virtually so) traveller editions. I understand people's desire for rare collectables, but some of us would just like to be able to see uncommon shiny things in caches.
  16. Another feature request I have as a new premium member with regards to Pocket Queries, I'd really like more flexibility in the 'last found' options when building PQs. Right not the only option relating to when a cache was last found is in the 'That' and'ed options: 'Found in the last 7 days', so there's no way to build a query for caches that haven't been visited all that recently. I think having more flexibility like adding a 'Last found' section with options similar to the 'Placed during' section would be handy for finding the path less travelled.
  17. Having just become a premium member the other day, I have noticed one mild annoyance when trying to create new Pocket Queries, namely that the default coordinates filled in are 0° / 0° by default, which means if you want to create a variety of PQs near your home coordinates, you have to fill them in by hand for each one. Seems like it would be more useful to have your home coordinates just filled in by default here, letting you change them if you want different coordinates, or ignore them if you want to set the origin in other ways. Or at least have another radio button option under "From origin" that is just "My home coordinates". (The funny thing is that for setting up notifications via the Insta-Notify system, it uses your home coordinates by default, but not for PQs!)
