  1. Very Cool! Looks like signatures are adding up quickly! I can't wait to get mine out, I'm curious how fast I can get 511 names.... I'm dropping it in a TB CLUB CACHE this weekend while at a MEGA EVENT in West Bend, WI. We leave in 2 hours!
  2. This new Travel Bug, along 3 others of mine, will be released this weekend at the Mega Event in West Bend, WI. My intent is to hand it to someone I know to be assured it will get logged, but if not, I will be dropping it in a TB CLUB CACHE in town while I'm there. I'm so excited to see how this one goes over. I also have a Dear Diary TB where people add an entry if they wish. I just love reading what other people have written!!
  3. Sounds great, but you should know that you can, in fact, place teh actual cache container inside the library. I happen to agree, as long as I do things correctly I will be fine and in the end, I will rely on my local reviewer for the final say. Thanks SO MUCH for the input! (I had no idea my little question would spark so many replies!)
  4. I must say, when I started as a letterboxer several years ago, I can't remember a time when I saw a "geo-trail" of any kind, ever. I was never aware of such a thing until I started geocaching. I know the main difference is that there are far fewer letterboxers and far fewer boxes are published on the www. Just the other day, I noticed one cache had 4 geo-trails leading to it, 3 were unnecessary in my opinion, for if cachers would just take a moment and take their eyes off the GPSr, they would see the trail into the woods that obviously leads to the cache. At GZ of this same cache, there was a young tree broken in half and I'm no tree expert, but it looked very healthy from what I could see of its insides. It's like anything I suppose, it starts out great and along the way people ruin things by acting less responsible than they should until someone steps in and says, "OK here are the new rules." I can clearly see a day in the future when it will be monitored more heavily, perhaps with a reviewer needing to visit the cache personally before approving it. Which would mean more reviewers would be needed, for sure. I will admit, when I was a new cacher, I would often come upon a spot which made me think, "This would make a great place for a cache." And that would be the end of the thought. I realize now that I'm a bit more experienced that there is much more thought that needs to go into placing a cache. I personally feel it is more fun to find a cache without a geo-trail. Happy caching!
  5. Thanks again everyone for the input! I will do all my homework, plan this one carefully, make sure it falls within the guidelines, seek the help and advice of my local reviewer and place this library cache within the next month or so. It will use a GPSr several times, involve an actual cache container hidden outside, and best of all it will be fun for kids! Maybe in the process, it will bring a few kids back to this really cool place that many children don't even know exist anymore..... the library! LOL! Happy caching!
  6. Prime Suspect, not sure I understand....... Since there will be no indication of the location in the title or description, they won't know to go to the plaque on the library until they use their GPSr to get them there. Kind of like any multi that takes you to a first set of coords, they don't make you choose from several different sets of coords before you can move on to the next waypoint, you use the ones they give you on the cache page. Why would they make you choose from several plaques? WP1 is WP1, whether it leads to a little slip of paper or a plaque or whatever. I could see if the description said "cache is in library, clues are on plaque on front of building." Then a person could find it without coords, which I know is talked about clearly in the guidelines, this would be a cache that could be found without a GPSr, which is clearly not allowed. I appreciate all the input, you've all given me lots of indication that I really need to be sure I have everything in order before I go forward.
  7. Yes, I just attempted one the other day. There were 5 "stations" to get you to the final. This clues involved math, which comes naturally to me, but I struggled with it. Not because it was hard, but because the equations weren't written properly. A few of the stations I figured out, even with the confusing equations, but just could NOT come up with the final. The most confusing station was one that brought you to a frisbee golf basket marked "1." But the question for that station asked "Which hole crosses a meadow?" The obvious answer would be "1" but that didn't work in the final equation (could have been any of them as they were all in meadows). So if the answer was say "5" then why did they bring me to hole "1" to ask the question? With the excecption of the final, we found all waypoints and saw the beauty that was intended to be seen, enough for us anyway. We will not return to finish this cache or ask for hints, we'll simply move on to the next cache with no hard feelings.
  8. Here it is.... Life's Little Instruction Book Travel Bug
  9. Sounds like a neat idea. What book are you considering? I was considering a book called "The Secret" but haven't finished reading it yet. I found an alternative book today, read my post before this one...
  10. I found the perfect book today! At a thrift store even! And there were 2 copies! And only 89 cents! Can you tell I am SOOOO excited?! I purchased 4 travel bugs last year, sent one out right away called "Traveling Soldier" and the other 3 have been sitting on my desk ever since. I wanted to think up some original, really cool items to send out into the geocaching world, yet at the same time realizing that they could just disappear suddenly and I shouldn't put too much thought or money into them. I've obviously procrastinated too long. I'm headed for a Mega Event next weekend, my first Mega ever, and want to take them with me. (No, I will not drop them in the event itself, I will either hand them to cachers I know will move them or put them in the local TB HOTEL cache while there.) Anyway, the book is called "Life's Little Instruction Book" and has "511 suggestions, observations, and reminders on how to live a happy and rewarding life." I will request finders to pen their trail name behind one or several of their favorite quotes in the book and also to log the number of that quote when they log the TB. I've started by putting my name behind 6 or 7 of my favorites. The goal is to eventually have all 511 quotes with at least one name behind them. Why the second copy? When folks log online the numbers of their favorite quotes, I can look in my second copy to see what they are. I'm such a people-watcher and this is one way, a fun way I think, to people-watch without being seen. Thanks for all the great opinions, I will post the link to the new TB soon.
  11. As I said, I thought I remembered hearing some controversary a while back, it's obvious there are many different opinions on this one. I AM aware that just because certain caches exist does not mean they will be acceptable today, I learned that through trial & error. I think my best bet is to check with my local reviewers. I checked the coordinated today, to be sure they weren't too close to any other caches. Wouldn't you know it, they are! Too close to only ONE cache, ONE OF MINE! Go figure! So now my dilemna is do I move my current cache (which has been well-received) to make this new library kid cache??? What to do....what to do...... Thanks for the replies, I'd still like to hear from a reviewer on this one if you're listening....
  12. I was thinking it would be either a multi or a puzzle cache. The GPS coordinates would take you to the building where you find a plaque on the outside of the building. Clues from the plaque would guide you to the next stage, inside the library. While it would be fairly easy, being a kid cache, I would not indulge the fact that it is a library anywhere in the title or on the cache page; the only way to find it would be with a GPSr. I'm thinking as long as I'm careful to follow the guidelines closely, I should be ok. I will also contact my local reviewer for input.
  13. I see one of yours, it was obvious by the title. Would you care to share the title or GC number of the other one?
  14. I'd like to place a cache in our local library (geared towards kids as many of my caches are), but I could swear I've read something about them being unacceptable. I've searched the forums and read the cache placement guidlines as best I could and cannot find a clear answer. Does anyone know, are library caches acceptable?
  15. I'm thinking of using a small book as a Traveler, I would put it in a baggie, of course. Have you ever seen one? What do you think?
  16. One of the first TBs we ever found, the Great CATsby, a stuffed cat who wanted to see things with "CAT" in the name. When we found him, he was freezing and damp in a local cache, so we put a hat on him, packed his suitcase and got him a camera.... So we took him somehwere warm, the Eastern Caribbean, on a cruise ship. Here he is lounging on the Lido deck with hamburger and fries with no CATsup! Here he is enjoying a view of CAT Island, Bahamas. Here he is taking a CAT nap in our suite, all that eating and sightseeing tired him out! When we returned home, we took him CATching, I know, it's a stretch! He found his first cache... ...and there was even a TB inside, a cute little monkey! We had so much fun with the Great CATsby, he traveled thousands of miles with us!
  17. I recently discovered my WalMart no longer carries camo duct tape either. I switched to spray paint, the kind that is intended for plastic. I have one cache that's held up to about 8 months of caching and it's only scratched a little bit. It goes MUCH farther than tape does and is much quicker to apply.
  18. I'm a cacher that started out as a boxer; boxed for 2 years before I started caching. I own several letterboxes, several geocaches, and several hybrid boxes. I would absolutely love it if it were my cache and you signed my log, no matter HOW you found it. When I do maintenance on my boxes, I LOVE reading the logs. Since I started out a letterboxer, I still have a soft spot for stamps and seeing them in my logs. (I am still a letterboxer, but since we've found all letterboxes in our area, we only get to letterbox when we travel.) Thanks for a great post!
  19. My personal FTF goal is to never be FTF. So far, I have met this goal. I love this game!
  20. I'd be happy to place one for you. I live in Sheboygan Falls, WI and travel quite often. Let me know where and when, I'll do everything I can to help! Happy caching!
  21. OK, easy enough. I downloaded GSAK and was so happy to finally learn what GSAK stood for! LOL! I saved the zip file in my inbox from geocaching.com onto my desktop, dragged it into GSAK, and it's showing me them on the screen. COOL! What does this mean? I'm assuming it's a way to get those caches from the GSAK screen into my GPSr, but I'm just not sure what you mean. NEW QUESTION: Now, how do I get ALL caches in my local area into my GPSr? I'd like them in there so that when I plant new ones, I know if there's already a cache at the new location or not. (I had them all in my old GPSr, but got a new one and had to start over.) It's so fun learning technology, especially when combined with my favorite game....geocaching!
  22. Thank you for the replies, I will do what you've suggested and come back here when I have more questions. It's so nice to know others are here to help!
  23. I have done several KID CACHES. Some of the themes are Disney Princesses, Hannah Montana, Love the Earth, Cars & Trucks, Icky Sticky Bugs, Girl Power, High School Musical, Hello Kitty, Tinkerbell, Spiderman, Halloween, etc. We go to the dollar store and they always have themed items for these type caches. Cute little notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, stickers, etc. All the titles begin with "KID CACHE" so cachers are prepared. So far, ours have gotten good reviews. And the cachers without kids still search for them! I'd say go for it!!
  24. I've been caching for a while now, even have a few hides. Just decided to upgrade to Premium membership. I've created a Pocket Query and it's been sent to my email. Now what do I do with it? I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx. I use Map Source. I got my maps from Ibycus. That's about the extent of what I know. Please use simple terms, I'm still fairly new to this and know just enough about computers to get by. Is it possible to have new caches sent to my cell phone when they are published? Thanks!
  25. Does being a military wife count? How about a military parent? I fit BOTH!! In 1987 & 88, I was a military wife of a Marine. I "did my time" worrying my young little head off while hubby was deployed during Desert Storm. Since my son was 17, he's now 20, I've been the proud mom of an Army soldier. Right now, I'm "doing my time" here at home while he's on his first deployment to Afghanistan with the Task Force Warrior 410th MP Company from Fort Hood, TX. I know "doing my time" as a wife and mother is NOWHERE NEAR the same as it is being the enlisted person. Just know that I am proud of ALL OF YOU who have served in the military. Thank You!
