I know a PhD student that spent most of her 20's traveling and exploring. She's now spending most of her 30's paying off the debt from all that travel. It's astounding what you can do with student loans.

Splitting into separate geocaching IDs... pros and cons
bittsen replied to hoagies's topic in General geocaching topics
Split the accounts now and here's why. Geocaching is as much about seeing things as it is about finding things. When you only log as a team, you may have one of your group go to a cool spot (alone) and then click off the smiley. Now on your team account that spot is done. Several years down the line another person on your team may be in the same area and would likely skip that cool spot because there's already a smiley there. If they had their own account they wouldn't have a smiley there and would, possibly, be drawn to that cool experience that the other team member had already experienced. Plus it's a good way to track members of your family. -
The GeoTriad Challenge (not that one off 4th cache)
bittsen replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
I would take your challenge but, unfortunately, I have already discovered the original stash plaque. -
That almost looks like art from a Hardy Boys book.

You have weird trout. Corn is illegal here or i would have mentioned it. I'm not an angler but you've peaked my interest. Why is corn a no-no? Too irresistible to the trout? As knowschad said, the trout cannot fully digest corn (sort of like humans) and the husks end up plugging them up and they die if they get the corn off of the hook but aren't caught. When I was little, the #1 bait was corn and it was OK to fish in the middle of the night too. You could catch a lot of fish at 2AM using corn.

Things you love, love, love to find in a geocache?
bittsen replied to naj2000us's topic in General geocaching topics
Hamsters. -
Bingo!! You nailed it!! Just as there is no ONE fish bait for trout, there is no single repellant for mosquitos (except DEET) When fishing for trout, some love cheese, some love salmon eggs and some love worms. Some skeeters are repelled by Skin so Soft and some "may" be repelled by dryer sheets (but I doubt it) and some may hate listerine... It sounds as if DEET is still the best choice.

While I don't really buy in to the whole marriage thing I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations on the proposal and commend you on the wolrd class method of making the proposal. Well done!!

I thought yours had already been done. I don't see a way to improve on the avatar you have. -

Find a decent cache along the freeway, hopefully in a direction headed to Alaska, and drop it in. I found one a while back with the same goal and held onto it long enough that I could drop it up near Geowoodstock, getting it 170 miles closer to it's goal.

Something strange seen while caching
bittsen replied to RIclimber's topic in General geocaching topics
A giant erector set? Looks like part of a tunel boring machine? Maybe some sort of specialized storage tank? -
Just the Thermos. Nothing more. Nothing less. That depends very much on what's in the thermos. Preferably something 80 proof. And a towel, of course. Never forget the towel. Or a moist towelette will work in a pinch A moist towlette will never substitute when trying to prevent a wet spot. You know, like when you accidentally get wet while caching and want to protect your car seat.

If I learned one thing at GW8 it was ...
bittsen replied to DragonsWest's topic in General geocaching topics
They are items that a cacher hands out that is collectible by some. They are personalized in many ways so that no two cachers have the same signature item (or pathtag). -

If I learned one thing at GW8 it was ...
bittsen replied to DragonsWest's topic in General geocaching topics
Something else I learned at GWVIII is that people can be trackable. I was going to get a trackable Tshirt but I didn't like the colors and the material seemed really really (um, what's a good word for cheap) thin. -
I just heard on the radio today that dryer sheets are a good mosquito repellant. Anyone know anything about this? (I mean firsthand, not a google article reference) Has anyone tried it? If it works then why wouldn't it work if you just used a dryer sheet with your normal laundry? Wouldn't the smell be in your clothes?

If I learned one thing at GW8 it was ...
bittsen replied to DragonsWest's topic in General geocaching topics
ExACTly. If I wanted to have said hi to you, you would have had to have found me on your own, or I would have had to have randomly seen you and glanced at your name tag (I hate staring at people's chest, "looking for a nametag" ) What?! IF you wanted to say HI?! Nobody said I was allowed to wear a nametag. -

bittsen replied to DragonsWest's topic in General geocaching topics
I learned many things but two are most important. Number one is that geocachers truly do come from all walls of life. Number two is that if I want anyone to say hi to me I will have to be publicly identifiable. -
Great, now we can look forward to a bunch of posts about running into an ex at a geocaching event plus any and all variations of things that might come out of that. I can't wait.

You are a bit behind the curve. That was yesterdays news. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. He may be back together with old what's her name. The big question is Was he ever with her or did he just have a geocrush?

Hmmm.... Who was it that said it was ALL about the girl? And, here's the question. What would YOU do if you found your Significant Other's signature on someone elses log(sheet)?
