  1. I just went to an archived cache from few years ago and deleted a note I had on there with no issues.

If the cache is locked, or even worse, retracted, then you can't delete your logs on it, but of it's simply archived, there shouldn't be any issues.

  2. Completely OK, IMHO.

With the condition that they do state in their logs what they signed as, and the members of the team.

E.g. I was once part of a 14-cacher crew, walking around an island, finding the caches there, and we cane up with a team name, so I formatted all my logs like this:

    https://coord.info/GL16FQWBF

As a cache owner, I would actually appreciate logs like this, if it's a micro cache placement, to save logbook space. And oh boy, if your cache happens to be near a bigger event, or even a Mega...

I may have to archive those.  ATM I am doing my best to keep up the maintenance.

If you want to see your caches keep going and find like it's not feasible to maintain them, you may consider reaching out to other local cachers to see if someone would be keen to adopt.

But to add to your original topic, that's an interesting thing to think about. Being in my mid-30s it's not something that would cross my mind yet. However it has already been more than 15 years since I started caching, and, not as a person, but as a geocacher, I can already be considered "old-school" .

I used to wander around until early hours in the mornings with friends, or alone, while geocaching and urban exploring. Nowadays I don't really do that anymore. I also used to do more things that could lead to injury/arrest than now, while caching. Which is probably more result of better guidelines and mature cache placements but also getting older definitely plays part there.

  4. I have a geocoin that I only visit in my every 100th cache find. :) My milestone story teller.

I want to also write out a log for each of those visits but am at least 10 years behind in doing that :D

Of the ones logged by phone, two were later edited on computer, and two were deleted and logged again, also on computer.

I think that's the key there - two of the ones logged on the phone were deleted and logged on the website. So that would have changed the order proabably.

P.S. I can't advocate enough for posting a find time and a counter on each log. I didn't consistently add the counter up until I found >1000 caches, but writing down the time has been a thing for me since the beginning. So much so that I get really annoyed (for no reason) when people don't write down their exact time of FTF in their logs :D

  6. Were all the logs posted via the same method? (website/app/gsak etc) I can't remember exactly what was the issue but I think it is known that logs submitted via different means can have a different timestamp in the GC database. Someone can elaborate or correct me if I'm wrong.

Personally, I also like my logs to appear in the correct order, but I really care only for big milestones.

I also always add exact time of find and a counter to my logs, so the list order is not that important if I need to go back to years old logs to figure out what was the exact order of caches I found on a day.

    1. Allow owners of Ad Labs to delete an existing placement and give them a totally new credit when they do so?

    2. Automatic archiving of Ad Labs when nobody has visited any of the stages for a pre-determined period?

    3. Continue to give out new credits by whatever system Groundspeak choose - but make the system transparent, and don't ignore those C.O.'s who already have four or five successful Ad Labs?

    1. I would partially agree with your first point - archiving an existing one, if there is an issue that makes it unplayable, and getting a replacement credit should be a thing. But I would strongly disagree if players would start archiving and recreating purely to "keep the game fresh"

    2. Which comes to me completely and strongly disagreeing with any sort of a suggestion of auto-archival. I am sometimes going out and finding lonely caches that haven 't been visited for 10 years. And they are still there and in good condition. I want to go and find historic AdLabs when I first travel to a new place where an adlab was placed in 2019, even if it hasn't been visited for the last 4 years.

    3. I don't think the system ignores the COs who have put out successful AdLabs. It's just more of a random thing than anything, I think. I kept getting the credits even though I wasn't specifically applying for them. I have now made 7 ALs in total. (Excluding that experiment one back in 2014)

incidentally the 500 Error suggested referring to Geocaching on Twitter for updates. Not everyone uses, has access to X, hence coming here to the forums.

This should be changed to keep such reporting within the Groundspeak system IMO.

You don't have to "use" (as in sign-in) twitter to follow the link and view the tweets though.

IMHO it's a good way to distribute real time short updates like that. Geocaching forums might be inaccessible, if Groundspeak have a serious outage anyway.

Definitions are fine but cacher owners do not follow them. You can't change that. You can only change the definitions to follow the current practice. For example, the regular size do not match what is regular in the reality. When I am searching a cache that is "small size" I am used to trying to find a micro. I am ok with all these quirks. I'll just say that the new class probably won't solve any problem.

Sounds like a locality to me too. Around where I am, I don't remember finding film canisters and pill bottles listed as "small"

We will be removing the lookup code entirely sometime soon,

Sorry to bring up an old topic. BUT. It's been more than 5 years since "sometime soon" was mentioned, however the annoyingly wrong lookup codes are still coming up. I just created a multi-cache last week, and this is how it appears on the website. Do we have any update on this? :)

That is strange. I requested you for my friends list so I can see what it looks on my end. I'm using Android too and the numbers match but I see that they don't for you! Mine do include all of my adventure labs.

Interesting. For you, it says 250, and then when I tap on that, I see "This player has 167 active cache hides". So I'm guessing, it only shows all of them only on your own profile. From someone else perspective it hides the archived ones.

  12. I found and logged a few caches on Saturday, 20th. This is about 9:30am NZ time, so could understand if the souvenir said it was earned on 19th Aug.
But instead the souvenir says, it was earned on 21st of August!
It shows correctly on the app, as 20th, so it must be a website specific bug to the IGC Day souvenir?

Because with those caches I also happened to unlock one of the Signal's Labyrinth souvenirs, and that shows correctly both on the website and the app.

  13. I know that I have an Adventue Lab cache that there is absolutely no way to view (AFAIK), but it shows up on my hides.

So I have done 5 normal adventure labs, each with 5 location. 5x5=25. But I have 26 under my profile because of that time when Groundspeak did some sort of a Valentines promotion 10 years ago and allowed people to create a virtual AL cache.

But what is even odder, I just had a look on geocaching app, and it says I have hidden a total of 59 caches!? How did it get that number?

I logged an adventure lab in New Zealand at 4pm on 21 August New Zealand local time (equal to 9pm 20 August Seattle time), however looking at the activity report it shows my log at 22 August! A date that will not occur anywhere on the planet for at least another 8 hours.

Please use the date on the local device for logging the activity reports, and confirm it carries the correct local time through to geocaching statistics. (Project-GC, for instance can also be a day out, I assume the dates it collects from Groundspeak are because lab cache finds are in Seattle time and not local time).

Can confirm that this is still happening

I am a bit late to the party, but I found a """solution""" to this problem.

If you finish your own adventure lab, you will get all of the locations as "finds" on your account, and the whole adventure lab will be marked as "completed". Afterwards, you can go to https://labs.geocaching.com/logs/ and delete your logs, reducing the finds number on your account back to the original value. However, the adventure lab itself will still remain in a "completed" state, meaning you can filter it out with that filter if you want to.

This is a hacky workaround, but I found it useful since I pretty much always filter out completed adventure labs.

I thought this was a good solution as well. I discovered it 3 years ago already, after creating my first AL.
But now, after putting a couple more out, I was playing around and discovered the following:

even though you delete your "finds", they are still recorded in the AL stats. I didn't know this before because the stats show only the first 10 to complete. But now I did it not too long after only one person had done it, and now I'm in my own AL stats...And can clearly see that even though my logs are deleted, it still shows up on the AdLab itself, just not on my profile count.

Just something to be aware of if you want to "remove" your own ones from the map this way.

Groundspeak should really fix these things by adding another filtering option and by preventing ow logging of ALs.

Also, I found that I can review my own Adlab, but at least it's possible to delete that. But this also shouldn't be possible.

  16. Now I feel silly that I did not notice that!

I get it now. If this was any other event that just got cancelled because of covid and archived, it wouldn't be an issue - just create a new listing, new code ad go.

But I guess because it's the special "celebration" one, once it was clear that the published one is not going to happen, it was retracted into a pre-published state, like when it was awarded, so that the CO could still use it and not lose it.

I also have one of those events that I still have to put out, and when it was awarded, it came with a GC code from the start.

Makes sense now! Thanks, this topic can be closed!

  17. OK, this is a bit of a weird one.

I have this bookmark list https://coord.info/BM1EFWC

I'm trying to add this cache listing to it https://coord.info/GC8ZDE7

On the cache page, it shows, it's in the list. When I open the list, it's not in there. Trying to add it again, nothing happens.

That cache listing, I can add it to any other of my lists, and it shows up. I can remove from any other lists, no problem.

This list, it's stuck somewhere in the no-cache-land.

I have tried different browsers, no luck. Help?
