  1. I was curious who here lives in Santa Barbara or Ojai? Southern California by the way... Just curious who my neighbors are! THats all!
  2. I'm taking a flight to Seattle around Christmas and i was curious if GPSr use was allowed on commercial flights? I thoght i always remembered the flight attendents saying that you can't use devices that send or recieve waves of anykind but im not sure. I'd love to see how it worked on a plane, if it did at all, but i would hate to be the cause of a crash! Anyways, appreciate the reponses.
  3. i think little sundials would be cool. Neat AND functional! who'da thunk?
  4. Wow... I just read a lot of this thread and I really can't believe the blatent flaming that has been going on in here. I am an avid Paintball player so I am constantly reading the paintball forums. Unfortunately, of the young men and boys age 12-25 who make up the majority of the sport, many are mean and immature. Those forums are CONSTANTLY full of arguments and trash talk and they get closed by the forum mods quite often. Considering paintball is somewhat of a testosterone filled and often painful game, i understand the hostility. Geocaching on the other hand, my new favorite hobby, is a nice, peaceful, nature filled, exciting game enjoyed by all ages of all walks of life all over the world. I have been amazed in the last few weeks of exciting geocaching of its ability to bring people together from all over to share common interests and stories on this great forum. Assuming that most people who geocache are of legal age to share "R" rated jokes, i understand wanting to be able to talk around each other like adults in a more real world setting. I see from the the standpoint of the organization however, why precautions must be made to protect everyone. So, while I don't think blame should be placed on anyone, I think everyone should maybe think about the bigger picture instead of becoming defensive and worrying about winning the argument. At some point, I feel I have no business in any of this, and I dont really want to become dragged into this further either, but I do share the love of this great game with everyone in here. So, instead of blaming mods, or other people, I think we should all forget about this, and just agree to disagree, or maybe come to a conclusion about all this without having to close the thread. Everyone needs to take a deeeeeeep breath.... and go find a cache. Thats all!
  5. I dont think its a vacation cache by any means. Just because it takes you a little while to actually get to the cache doesnt make it a "vacation". I understood from vacation caches that if you are on vacation, and not in a position to go there very often or ever again, then you cant place a cache. If I for example, lived at the bottom of a huge mountain, and was only a few miles from where the cache actually was, but it would take me many hours to hike to the cache, it would still be in the 25 mile (give or take) from your house "rule". I think those caches are great. It "forces" people to enjoy the journey and not just go from cache to cache to say that they did 100 caches in a day. Anyways, i think those caches are great. I probably wont ever go find one, but i think they are a great addition.
  6. haha... i beat you...
  7. Yeah, ive heard of those. Just search on these forums, and then in yahoo or something for tracking red monkey. Something will probably come up. AHA! Here we go. I'll do you one better. www.monkeycache.com
  8. I'm not looking to start any arguments. I'm just curious about what GPSr everyone uses. I haven't really seen any other threads about this and i was just wondering. I suppose you could also add whether you like it or not, or some small blurb. I use a Magellan SporTrac Map, and it's my first GPSr and i love it.
  9. I just recently successfuly uploaded and installed the newest software for the Magellan SporTrac Map off the Magellan website. I think its version 5.0 of the "firmware" they call it. Anyways, there is nothing that states what exactly the improvements of the new software are. I have noticed a few changes, and i have emailed the company, but have yet to recieve a reply. I was curious if anyone knows the specifics? Thanks a lot!
  10. Have 2 right now. Will place one of my own soon.
  11. I live in Santa Barbara and i like the band Phish.
  12. I was curious about this. I have a Magellan SporTrac Map. Today, i wanted to back track but i had already started down the trail back to my car so the track line had already started. When i went to backtrack, it was telling me to go back to the cache, then i think it would have started back tracking down the trail. I was wondering if anyone knew if you could skip the backtracks in order. Jump the backtracking to your currentt position. I cant find anything about this in the manual. Thanks!
  13. I hardley take anything also. 1. GPSr 2. Compass (rarely use it) 3. Cache goodies 4. Cache sheets 5. Pen
  14. hmmm.. on the right and the bottom, there should be a black border just like on the top and the left. The image is 75x75. It seems to crop it a little.
  15. just out of curiousity, does RTFM stand for "read the f***ing manual"?
  16. because im a poor student, i went to this "nick-nack" store by my house. They have tons of bouncy balls, keychains, rubber frongs, squishy putty, little toys, airplanes etc. They are all pretty cheap. I always bring a handful to the cache i am trying to find, and if there is something good in it that i want, i will leave 3,4,5 etc. little toys to balance out the good item. Anyways, i think you can just use common sense. I found a cigarette butt in a cache today, and i dont think that counts as a good item.
  17. i cache alone most of the time also. 13/20 caches found have been alone. The other times have been with my girlfriend. Caching alone is great!
  18. I had my last final today, and i was so excited that i went out and found 6 caches. It was my "end of the quarter" cache fest. Anyways, it was a blast. I found all these places i never knew existed. Anyways, no more school! Time to cache every day! Hopefully i wont use up all the caches that are close to me. I'll have to start placing my own!
  19. Thanks a lot everyone. That has been really helpful. 2oldfarts, yeah thats what i meant, i didnt really mean different points. (i like your name by the way). Anyways, thank you all very much. I just bought a bunch of trinkets today, so, hopefully within a week or so, maybe ill place a cache of my own.
  20. Hi, i have a magellan sportrac map, and i was curious how to use a traditional compass to help find caches when i get to that last 10-20 feet or so. I thought that i read that they can be used in this manner. I dont understand what i have to read on the screen of the gps. The bearing, degrees? Thats the part i dont get. Also, another question. I have heard of when people place a cache, they take an average from a number of points so their cache has the best coordinates. I was curious how to do this as well. I dont think that my sportrac map can average a number of different coordinates (i may be wrong) so i think it has to be done manually. Thank you very much!
