Wow! That must have been a 30 minute nightmare in the parking lot!Now that is a bunch of CACHERS
-
If the high find-counters are finding 2000 caches a year in San Diego, they might just have to widen their search area!
That is interesting. I guess the major cache hiders were all sucked into the MTRP vortex during that period of time. After finding a neat GSAK macro to optimize pocket queries, here's an interesting factoid from the results (pretty much all of San Diego County to the Salton Sea):I noticed something interesting in the data. It shows up quite clearly if you plot it out. The curve looks like the standard exponential curve you'd expect given that the caching community is getting larger -- except for an anomaly in the Spring of 2006. That was time period when the infamous 2006 MTRP Cache War was raging...
I'm so proud, call that peak the Carl-Harmon anomaly
I have another little tidbit. On one of the other threads someone was asking where people fell in the history of their state. As we know California was one of the early adopter states. When I joined about 4.5 years ago there were only 2000 caches in the entire state. Now there are 2000 caches within 20 miles of my house! It's pretty amazing how fast it's grown. It has been an exponential growth curve.
Another interesting thing has happened to Geocachers with very high find-counts.
In the earlyy days there weren't all that many caches so one had to wait around for new caches before going out on a hunt. Now with a very high find-count one must wait around for new caches just like in the beginning. History repeating itself?
Blessed are the hiders for they shall blanket the Earth.

After finding a neat GSAK macro to optimize pocket queries, here's an interesting factoid from the results (pretty much all of San Diego County to the Salton Sea):
Date Range of Cache Placements per ~500 caches, # of caches, # of days in range:
01 9/10/2000-10/22/2003 496 1137
02 10/23/2003-10/24/2004 497 367
03 10/25/2004-6/23/2005 497 241
04 6/24/2005-12/4/2005 495 163
05 12/5/2005-3/30/2006 498 115
06 3/31/2006-7/4/2006 496 95
07 7/5/2006-11/1/2006 498 119
08 11/2/2006-2/19/2007 496 109
09 2/20/2007-5/15/2007 492 84
10 5/16/2007-Now 32
We're basically stabilizing around 2000 new caches a year!
(on edit: DOH! my table got eaten!

This is excellent! Thanks for pointing this out - will save me a lot of time!
Interesting! I've never tried that. You learn something new everyday! There is NO OVERLAP if you get multiple PQs based on placed date, thus you can cover more area with less queries.... And if your GSAK database is up to date you can run this macro to generate and optimize the from and to dates for all your PQs that you need.

Wow - we found a robin's egg with no nest in sight - put it under a lamp for two weeks and it didn't hatch (luckily!!To an extent, that is what he would do. The bees are in an outdoor shed that I built. I have already removed the interior panel, and the entire hive is exposed. The hole where they are entering is easily sealed, and I will take care of that.Since I can see the entire hive, I could easily spray the bees and remove all traces of the hive and the dead bees without any difficutly.
He said the removal is very straightforward at this point, since he can reach it without a ladder, and he doesn't have to do any work to get to it. He said for $50 I could buy a ready made hive, and he gave me detailed instructions on how to remove the combs and transfer them to the box!
Not this cacher!
The larger beekeeping businesses buy their queens from breeders, and don't want a rogue colony. There is a lady that can come down from Santa Ana on Friday, and she doesn't charge for the service. She does it just to save the bees, but told me she will accept a "Love offering." (I'm waiting to hear back from Harmon on that one!)
Another cacher knows a local keeper, and he is going to see if he can borrow his gear, or get him to come up...
Anyway, in case anyone is interested, I'll let you know what happens. I'll take some pics tomorrow morning and post them...along with our other nature project. We found a day-old sparrow hatchling and spent over an hour looking for a nest with no luck. I went to the pet store and got some baby bird food...and it's made it 3 days so far!

Hey, that's a great idea! How about it, FlagMan??
Congratulations!
Congrats to all the other milestoners, and also to kwver and jahoadi and john, who blew past 3800 when no one was looking.
Thanks for the congrats! Hats off to jahoadi and john for their remarkable achievements...Who will reach 4000 first? [

The race is on
kwver
jahoadi and john
and GoBolts!

This isn't caching related...except for the fact that having to deal with it is taking up time that could be used for caching!
Does anyone know a good beekeeper?
I've got a backet-ball sized hive in my tool shed at home, and don't really want to kill them. I found one beekeeper that really wants them...he is trying to add 70 new hives this year. However, he wants $175 to come remove them!
(I have already removed the interior paneling and the hive is totally exposed.)
Anyway, I know there is a serious decline in bees, so I am hesitant to kill them. But, a $5 fogger will take care of them...and I can't justfiy the $175 charge.
Any ideas?
If this is an accurate representation of your two options, then maybe the $175 will get you a better result than the $5. Seems like a lot of work even for $175. Do you know if that is what he would do?

There is that one slightly hairy stretch right after that part....
Slight update, seems it is going to be the Bear Valley area.If anyone is interested I am going to do either the Bear Valley or the Otay Truck trail caches on Tuesday the 15th. I just picked-up a new {or at least new to me
} GeoMobile; an '03 Chevrolet Blazer 2dr 4WD, and am itching to try it out on it's innagural geocaching trip. I should have an x-tra seat open or anyone else wants to come along with their vehicle.
No definate plans and I am open to either one of the trails, just want to get the vehicle out and give it a try on a trail, nothing too rough, but just enough maybe to at least try-out the 4WD.
Good choice - that one isn't too rough.
Crud! And haven't even made my first payment yet.
No really, that is somewhat photoshopped, Right?
Start time near the Buckman Springs/Bear Valley Road start should be about 8:30ish.
Hehe, yes, it's a Banter special. However, I did christen the skid plate right there so watch out for that one rock! It was a bit of a bumpy ride - haven't been able to talk the family into going for those wild rides after that one.

At three minutes and four seconds after 2 AM on the 6th of May this year, the time and date will be 02:03:04 05/06/07.
This will never happen again...
What about 03:04:05 06/07/08 or 04:05:06 07/08/09 etc? - seems like an annual event for a little while, until, say... 09:10:11 12/13/14 (for those who like to sleep at night

Actually, Google Maps, as we've seen, if he's got a gpx file.
Nice site Duncan! What would be really cool is a map of the US showing a track of where he's been! I think you can do it in Google Earth!
Very impressive what he's doing - and you for helping - btw, Google Video is spelled wrong!Say does anybody know whatever happened to Radical Geezer? I forgot the website to track his status on his hike across the country.....
Funny you should mention Bill. I'm just putting the finishing touches on his website. I'm just giving it a new look, making it a little easier to read. I'm by no means a "webmaster", but I think it came out okay:
It will be up and running in a couple of days.
He says to say "hi". Hi.
I can only imagine all the caches he's passed by...
Yeah, I know, just testing you guys!

Here's my first contribution to the San Diego County Cache Critters thread!
Caught looking for nectar caches near our Little Oaks in Olivenhain cache.

Wow, that is cool - great find!I found out from my brother that Google Maps can directly import KML or KMZ files. What this means is we can use Google Earth to create files of our tracks, etc. and overlay it with Google Maps. Although the following link example does not have any cache waypoints, it can contain anything that the KML/KMZ file support. Pretty cool.. check it out. Otay TracksIt is an easy way to post tracks to help others.

Make it a 20 waypoint multi in a 20 foot radius and you'll really have something fun! This just in ...Say, I've been thinking of a new series of rocky-macro streambed caches for MTRP. Whaddayathink?
-
Not for me! I have a 60CS and we didn't get any badgers or POIs.
Did you get an update? There wasn't one when I checked a few days ago.
-
Well, for us old technology (non-csx) types, it seems the best current solution is to just set our units to mountain time. There's new firmware releases for Garmin 60 GPS units and for Palm PDAs. These releases include a change for handling redefined dates for Daylight Saving Time.on edit - ah, i see setting DST to Yes works better
(who needs no stinkin' firmware update!)

Possibly 3000 posts in this thread! Another milestone for San Diego!BTW, what is going on this weekend? Saturday?TA

Sorry dude but you never posted anything on the SD thread....Sorry you missed out. I made a post (and so did Cornerstone4) earlier in January about the nomination process in the SD thread. I got no responses to that.Nobody ever posted a link on the SD thread until 2 hours before the deadline....
Yes, he did. Somehow it slipped right past us.
