  1. huh? What is AIX? A mountain. Bzzt. Sorry, that is incorrect. Not worth wasting my time. goodbye
  2. While reading the story you linked to I noticed that on 2-26-09 Dave Ulmer commented about his spot. I know of one cacher that could have used one. He was lucky he got a phone signal when he fell and broke ribs and his face. Another cacher was in the SAR team but it was almost dark and they were having a difficult time finding a safe route to him. He was eventually helicoptered out.
  3. SHOTGUN! 85 degrees and you want heated seats? Hey, it's only supposed to get to the mid 70's on Sunday, a regular arctic weather front. What kind of girlie Jeep has heated leather seats anyway? The kind that allows me to hear the radio, have a warm butt, monitor the tire pressure, quadradrive, and sleep in the back: Can we get a headcount of just the peeps who will be meeting in the parking lot in Silverdale? I want to be able to hit the road as soon as everyone shows up. Its not nearly as "girlie looking" now with those tires and wheels as when he first got. Nice headlights too. Have fun guys and dolls.
  4. While I am interested in exploring the cave...... Alas, this summer my body is not suitable to make the attempt.
  5. There is more than one square inch of silence in the ONP. I have been there many times. Of course you need to get away from any trails or get deep into the interior to get away from noise from some hikers. Last time I was there I could see a couple of jets overhead, but they were so high they were silent.
  6. Any one can pick up trash. They just have to take it with them unless arrangements are made for disposal. Just a reminder that clearing sticks and limbs and small rocks is ok just not maintenance that requires "tools". Happy Trails Ironman
  7. The National Forest Service frowns on just anybody doing trail maintenance other that the old saying: "knock a rock, kick a stick." If you really want to do some trail work this organization does a lot of work on trails throughout many parts of this state.
  8. I find this one of your most sensible idea and comment so far. Give up the forums. Get out into some new country. AND ENJOY YOURSELF AND THIS GRAND COUNTRY! I enjoy caching alone and in groups depending on the destination.
  9. A) That was on topic. I was stating why one should not nail trees, which embed in the tree, as opposed to fire ticks, which do not. Ever hear of tree spiking? Tree Spiking It's an eco-terrorist trick that involves hammering ceramic or metal (most often large nails, screws, or spikes) into trees. While the main purpose of this is to render the timber non-cost effective to harvest, more than one lumberjack has lost his life when his saw kicked back/shattered on this stuff. A face screen and saw chaps is not going to save your life when an industrial saw with a 36" bar and chain shatter on you. Better read your link better and do more research. Your link states: "almost killing a mill worker." Not killing him. In my research I only found one documented injury. It involved an 11 inch spike. The worker also claimed he had complained to his boss that the band saw blade was wobbly and cracks had begun to appear in it. He had thought about not going to work because the blade was so bad and new ones hadn't arrived.
  10. She has her work cut out for herself. Speedy recovery my friend. A major milestone for me today. 1 week after surgery I was able to walk up 1 flight of stairs! I took the stairs while IronMaiden was busy parking the truck. Of course I was so tired that after getting some orders for lab work at the doctors office I took the elevator down, then rested in the truck for a half hour before going into the lab for bloodwork. Hopefully maybe in a month I can do something with the Pokey Plodders.
  11. Dang, he's onto me. I had seriously considered coming just to car camp while others hiked and maybe doing some cooking. But with Abbey's comment maybe not. All kidding aside I would love to be there with you guys but next week I go in for open heart surgery to replace a valve. I won't be up to camping by this date. Keep me in mind for future hikes though as soon as my doctor releases me. I'll need some easy ones before Criminal takes me on a killer hike. Ironman
  12. It is my understanding California just recently changed that law to allow the use of suction cup type mounting. There was something about that in one of these threads a while ago. That may be true. But they haven't changed it in either of the two places I read it on my trip this month. I probably didn't need to be too concerned since I watched the CHIP radar a guy passing me on the right @ 80+ in a 65 construction zone both coming and going, then go back to checking others coming.
  13. WSGA doesn't have a formal position and was not asked for input. As an individual, I think it would be unfair to fine me for having a cheap car with a window-mounted GPS instead of a fancier car with an in-dash unit. I personally am not too distraught about this at present; I'd like to see how things shake out. My GPS is still in its window mount and will remain that way, and I never use it for texting. I wouldn't drive your vehicle to the state of California. ANYTHING mounted via suction cup to the windshield is against the law. I suctioned cup my navigation system to the Tach on the dash. Who needs a tach with an automatic in a Mitsubishi Outlander? It is in the same place but enough to the side on my truck at home. My speedometer quit so it is my speedo for now.
  14. I did this but with a tree stump. It has been sitting between a busy NW city street and the sidewalk for several years. It weathers nicely. Maybe I can find another one for him since he is local (sorta)to me. But then maybe he should find mine first.
  15. I sorta said I was interested before I read the cache page and logs. Yowzer! But sure, let's run it up the flagpole and see who salutes. AHOTM - Saturday, July 17. Challenging 12-mile hike in vertical terrain to Aix & Pains. Be prepared, this will be the hardest AHOTM yet and not for the timid. Who's interested? Interested? YES Will I make this one NO! A recent driving trip to California left me with chest pain on elevations above 4,000. A couple of passes were at 5,000. I am really bummed this summer. I may try a small hike tomorrow below 600' ele.
  16. I made the trip from Terrebonnne, Ore to Los Angelas via hwy 97 on June 3rd. It poured rain the whole way to Redding. I will come back another time when it isn't raining and the sage isn't blooming. This has reminded me that I need to log a couple of DNF on two caches near Steelhead Falls on the Deschutes River. I had to use the GPS from my truck and tried to teach my nephew how math can help have fun. I must have used the wrong formula to try to convert the minutes and seconds my truck gps uses. Oh well we had a nice hike.
  17. It's on my to do list also. I guess I better get-r-done. I am open for dates so far. I've climbed higher but they won't let me put caches up there. Som'tin about RF radiation and electrocution........
  18. I've had the Nescafe and the Tasters Choice. If you ever try the Starbucks singles you may not try the others again. Same size packets so no more trash than Nescafe, but better taste!!
  19. Sounds like you had fun. I have been to many of those areas but before I started geocaching. I have even been to the Maritime Museaum. I haven't been to an unemployment office in years. It is all done online or by phone now. Almost as easy as posting in these forums.
  20. I agree wholeheartedly! On TotemLake's last HOTM he gave me a packet of Starbuck's instant. I have tossed my other stuff and will now carry Starbucks instead. I rarely stop at one of their shops but will now to get the packets of instant. Now I want to go on a overnight hike so I can have some for breakfast as I watch the sun rise.
  21. I did some research after last weeks HOTM. It definitely was a juvenile tick I found crawling on my shirt. It also was the type that carries Lyme disease west of the Rockies. That is second time I have found a tick on my clothing.
  22. I seriously doubt I can do any hiking that weekend. It is the weekend of IronMaiden's and my 30th anniversary. I'm keeping on eye on this thread still though for later in the year.
