  1. I am packed to go. See ya at my book store.
  2. One story was written about HER back in 04 or 05. But another good one might be a good read.
  3. Good work on the treadmill. Maybe someday we will see you on a hike.
  4. Thanks for another memorable HOTM. One year ago today I was starting to struggle with hikes like this and altitudes. This summer I had a heart valve replaced and this was my first snowshoe hike since. Thanks again and I think this photo says it all: What I didn't know was my wife, IronMaiden, put this card in with my lunch which we didn't stop to eat: I don't know how she knew I would find her heart sparkling with snow up there anyway!
  5. Discrimination now? What a load of hooey. Cachers are asked to verify the exact location of property lines all of the time when they are placing a cache a razor thin distance from it. Try placing a cache right on the boundary of NPS land and see whether or not you get a note back asking you to verify the property line. You're assuming the trees are the property line. Your cache may well be on city property but if it is it's probably only by a matter of a few feet. It may also be a few feet onto RR property. The burden of proof is on you as the cache owner. I have placed a cache very near the boundary of NPS land. I got a note saying that the reviewers map showed it inside the Park. I showed an online map that showed it was outside the park. Result, cache approved and I was not asked to verify the property line. Another cacher placed on on the way in along the same boundary. Even though his was physically closer (within 5-10 feet) to the Park boundary, the maps showed it outside so his was approved with no note to verify the boundary. I know this area being discussed, I have lived near here for over 40 years. Yes it is a narrow piece of land between the road and the railroad. It is part of the entrance into the city. As the email states the trees are in the park. My first geocache was in a tree in a city park (the city where the OP works). The park had a paved path and the tree was next to a bench along the path. On the other side of the tree was about four feet of grass and then RR tracks. A spur that was used sometimes for switching cars. 10 feet from the tree the path merged onto a city street and the RR tracks went down the street. It got approved no questions asked. It was also across the street from the police station. It also happened to be less than 520' from another cache but that is another discussion.
  6. I would like to meet up and carpool with you. Leaving hogar de los Land Rover (N47 20.089 W122 18.125) at 0645. Still room for 3 more close frieds or 2 more not so close pals. Planning on being there.
  7. I would like to meet up and carpool with you.
  8. Let me know if you need a ride and I'll meet you at the below coordinates at 7:30. N47° 29.2551' W121° 47.5685' If I can't carpool with LandRover I would like to meet up with you there if you have room. Then I don't have to drive my truck, I can drive the Geo.
  9. I call shotgun!! (if you go) Either day works for me. I have something else I could do on Saturday if Sunday is decided. edit: If I seem to be waffling, I may start on some new welding certs and classes are on Sat. I need all the advantages I can get for work.
  10. Still won't work for me, due to something wonderful which this way cometh. However, that means my snowshoes will be available if if anyone needs a pair and wants to save a Jackson on rental fees. I don't remember the length, but they're MSR Lightning Ascents in brilliant red. Oh, stop looking for the survival DVDs, Fe has had them all along. Time to get That Girl into snowshoeing! Sat the 18th works best for me. I could do Sunday also though.
  11. IronMaiden won't let me out with my truck in the snow anymore. Those are 35" Super Swampers on there. While scouting the road for a snowshoe hike for a couple of geocaches I got stuck. I dug till 2 am and only moved a few inches. I ended up spending the night and walked out for help the next day. Then a year later I got stuck and had to dig out twice in the same day while she sat in the truck. This time it was memorial day weekend. So now she won't let me out in the snow unless someone else drives.
  12. Sounds like an incredible hike. I would love to join you but am not sure about being able to do that many days in a row this soon. Thru hikes in the Olympics is on my list of things to do. Have a safe and happy trip!
  13. I would like to thank my wife IronMaiden and every one for their support. I made it!! Although there were no caches on this hike it was good to be out again (we did do a few on the way home). 5,485 feet of sweet success. 12 miles round trip 9 1/2 weeks after surgery. Three months ago just driving at this altitude hurt, now I can walk and talk at this altitude. I was told if I could hike and talk I wasn't overdoing it. I'm sure the other cachers could verify I was doing well.
  14. National forests and BLM lands are federal lands and get caches approved in them all the time. I even got approval (from the National Forest Service) to put one in a National Monument and when I provided my "proof" the reviewers approved it.
  15. Yeah, what he said. Shameless bump to remind anyone interested that the 2010 Off-Trail HOTY will again be the Wonder Mountain Wilderness. Ironman will have to sit this one out, but I'm hoping to talk him into shuttling me up there and picking me up after. If I park my Jeep at his place he can use my mobile radio to try to make contact with me/us from the campsite. I still need to develop a radio plan and try to guesstimate the most likely repeaters. This will likely be one of the most memorable hikes you’ll ever do. I’d like to hit the trail as early as possible and hike right on past Lake 3995 to set up at Lake 3550. That’s a long day though, so the alternate plan is to just drop tent at 3995 and dayhike to 3550 in the morning. Keep an eye on SteepandCheap.com as they’ve been posting some nice lightweight solo and double tents, perfect for this hike, lately. If anyone wants to come but has questions, concerns, date preferences, etc; just post them here or drop me a line. I wouldn't count me out yet! I am up to 5 miles a day plus walking 11 floors of stairs without taking a break. The clincher will be can I get my pack under 25# and can I stand the chest straps??? A nice warm up hike Labor Day weekend would be nice.
  16. The bum ticker is probably more of an issue. Looks pretty steep on the topo and just didn't want to take an hour and a half getting back up. I'll take a look at the others maybe tonight but probably tomorrow night. It shouldn't take that long to get back to the top. 20 minutes tops. There are stages to rest in between. I have been thinking about checking on this one lately and am starting to feel up to it. But I have rehab in Oly and a Dr. appointment in Tacoma on Friday.
  17. You are seriously tempting me! I need to get my mind off this thread. I have had this one on my to do list a long time.
  18. Thanks TotemLake. I was looking forward to a hike with you and the crew as well. Give me a couple months to get back in the swing of things and I'll be joining you you on a hike, no matter what the weather may be. Take care. Maybe by that time I will be up to hiking again myself and can join the two of you. Make it an event/hike and call it Welcome BACK. I have been doing reading, watching movies and stuff like that the last 4 weeks also.
  19. I hope it doesn't spread too much. . I did note that just under the headline it says "has killed 60 people in the Pacific Northwest as of July". But the second paragraph from the bottom says: "Only 60 cases have been detected over nearly six years in two or three states. In the middle of the article it states: "But in 2004 the first case was reported in Oregon, and as of July 60 cases in the Pacific Northwest have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 45 cases in the region with known outcomes, nine patients died because of the infection and another six died with it, the CDC reported." 9 is a long way from the 60 it says died at the top of the page. I suspect the person writing the headline didn't read the whole story very well. I'll listen for it in the news but it won't change my hiking/camping habits yet

I am sure that for the time being his caches can stay the way they are and the community can do maintenance on them till the family can take care of their other pressing matters. Thanks for the update.

I was saddened to hear of his passing today. I remember him from a few events and some snowshoeing caching. It was great when he volunteered to have some hot food for us upon our returns. He did a lot of giving. Thanks for the photos for those that posted them.
  22. Just how many sock puppets do you need? Is there a button to push "report this abuser of the forums"? And learn how to spell, already. Look it up....that ain't how you spell the name of that town. Geez. Legitimate question for the getting started forum. Yes there is. It is at the bottom of every post. I think this guy is looking for a new name: Banned4evr To the original poster: Sorry someone tried to derail your thread.
  23. huh? What is AIX? A mountain. Bzzt. Sorry, that is incorrect. Not worth wasting my time. goodbye Think Jeapordy, Alex and a play on words. I did do a google search already.
  24. Why would you dig a hole on land that isn't yours? Did you have permission? By not posting in the forums it may have been published, but only till someone reported it was buried, then you most likely would have had to pull it and fill in the hole anyway.
