  1. Mike, When I read smac999's post, I wondered if it was the way their unit is set to track. If you tell the unit to track time (as opposed to distance or auto), it may very well take a few seconds to register that it's moving again; maybe even minutes, depending on the value in the setting. If this is the case, that's exactly how it's supposed to work. Perhaps this isn't a problem at all. Since there's no going back to 2.20, I'm holding off until 2.40 has more "user reviews". JMTC edited for Digitus Largus Erronious.
  2. I ordered mine from Amazon and it was $243.xx (free shipping) I just checked to see, and it's showing as $239.85. Where do you find it (at Amazon) for $217?
  3. I'm afraid that any mapping unit will be only a portion of your cost. Maps are an added expense, even if you only want a few. There are ways to make your own free topos in small areas and that may be the way you want to go. If you purchase maps, plan to spend an additional $100-125. And the new roads that they add every year won't show up. And probably not the ones they added last year.
  4. I'm really getting concerned here. On open coastal water, it's often imperative to go from point to point in order to avoid shallow water. If it's just going to tell me to cut straight to the destination (shallow water be damned), then it's not useful to me.
  5. LinXG, I agree that the question could have been phrased differently, however, I understood exactly what he wanted to know. Perhaps he could have asked "Which format offers the highest resolution?"
  6. Well, Garmin finally returned my email and sent me the same link you did. And the problem doesn't seem to be solved, although I haven't tried the install yet. The Legacy System download page specifically says "WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product." Well, DUH! I own it, but I can't get it off of the CD, so how will it know I own it? There seems to be a major faux pas is their logic. edited for digitus largus erronius.
  7. Any news or update on the redesigned screen protector? I'm holding off ordering, but the longer I wait, the more risk I take. What's the current status on this?
  8. If the USPS isn't using it as a mailbox,it's not a mailbox for the purpose of the law. Especially if you purchased it yourself. If you really want to get into nuances, could you have a cache inside your front door accessed via the front mail slot? That is an interesting technical question. Probably not, IF it is attached to the actual mail slot. But then again, who is going to enforce it? Trust me, they are really picky about this stuff if they have to be. .....and who would look there? I wouldn't. Too much risk of buckshot in the face.
  9. I wouldn't put any foam in it if I were you. You "unseat" the card by pushing on it, so when you put the battery cover back on with foam in place, it will push on the card, and unlatch it. Then, the next time you take the battery cover off, the card would fall out. Foam will probably make it worse. Just put it back in and keep it out of reach of the twins.
  10. If you placed it, there's really not any hunt involved in "finding" it. I think that's frowned upon.
  11. Would the system let him update them incrementally? Move it, say, 400 feet toward the new coords. Come back a few days later, and move it 400 more? I'm not advocating cheating here at all, just wondering if it's a plausible work-around.
  12. Please, PLEASE tell me that there is a version, fix, patch, whatever that will allow Garmin's Trip & Waypoint Manager to run on Windows 98. Nothing I read had any system requirements before I purchased. NOw I can't run the software. And if that's not bad enough, I have Topo US 2008 on order. Do I need to cancel that order before it ships? Do I have any options? Pleeeeze?
  13. The Summit HC is less than $200 and has 24MB of mapping capability. That's meager, but it might serve the purposes. It just depends on how much map you want to hold at a time. The Summit HC also has the electronic compass and altimeter. Both neat "geek toys".

  15. Signed $100's will get you noticed.....
  16. Ringbone? Sorry but you lost me.... http://geolex.locusprime.net/ Scroll down to the R's..... it's pretty funny.
  17. Forgive my ignorance (as I have never logged a find), if you saw the cache and in fact determined that it needed maintenance, isn't it a given that you "found" it? Seems like the software would see it that way. That is unless you are a returning visitor and wanted to make the needs maintenance note. Double logging is frowned on, isn't it?
  18. TrailGators, I don't think think it's a matter of being ashamed to take a point. Rather, they're trying to make it look like there's another poor soul out there that thinks the same way. See "ringbone"
  19. TypoWiz and dogwalkers2, Those are both EXCELLENT, informative posts. I've spent the better part of a week reading these forums and subforums trying to educate myself so I don't have to ask stupid questions. Many, many people make posts under the assumption that everyone is intimately familiar with the topic at hand. That's great for someone who is, but it isn't useful for learning purposes. Thanks for such straightforward, top-the-point posts! I'm learning........
  20. That was an AWESOME suggestion! Thanks; that's really helping to clear the mud (Yeah, these map topics are swimming in my head. Now for the bummer question. I noticed that the US Topo 2008 is missing some basic roads in my stomping grounds. (I'm going to be using my Vista HCx for a lot more than geocaching). But US Topo - East has the detail that I need. Garmin's website is showing it as discontinued. Are there retailers out there that might still have it? Can I buy someone else's copy or will the unlock stuff kill that idea? HELP, I need more detail than Topo 2008 provides.........
  21. [crossed fingers]Assuming that it's even on their "to fix" list.[/crossed fingers]
  22. Because I don't want to move to Kansas City. I hardly see that as being a problem. Of course, I don't speak for Garmin, or anyone else for that matter, but talent like yours is so good that many companies are willing to pay someone to work from home and thus, not require a move. It's entirely possible that a major manufacturer or map-maker would be interested in hiring your work either by the hour or (more likely) contracted for the specific job at hand. You're GOOD. JMTC
  23. I'd like to see if I could get a TB to take a picture of a grave a LONG way away. If I start a TB as an SD card, with instructions to photograph a grave in a particular location (find-able with cemetery records; I don't have coords) and then return "home". Would this work out? And of course, the TB would invite your random pictures as well. Problems with this idea? Has it been done?
  24. Will do, Monkeybrad. FWIW, I have the external power cord, and the zippered case to boot, all included.
