  1. Thanks for posting this topic! I was using the MobiPocket and found it decent, but thanks to your heads up. I found the CacheMate program and it looks great. It's inexpensive, easy to load and has all the info I want in a better format than the MobiPocket. WooHoo! Paperless here I come!
  2. Might take along a boom box with some heavy metal blasting from it. Last I checked wild animals didn't listen to heavy metal....... I'd stay away from classical though.
  3. Welcome! I have a Legend and it's great. I'm pretty new at this too and really can't offer any new advice. I learned a lot just from reading posts and the FAQ's.
  4. Things are much clearer now. The problem is that you need to upgrade to a real computer. Just kidding, however I do find it rather humorous that one of the usualy vaunted Macs is having such a difficult time.
  5. I mean no disrespect, but you guys are scary. I'm new at this so take it for what it's worth, but the light I plan on having with me when I cache is called sun light. But in reference to this thread. I work nights in a geothermal power plant that requires me to go out into a well field that stretches over two miles in the countryside. The only light is from my headlights or my flashlight. So I can relate to needing a reliable light. I use the mag light three D-cell flashlight. It has a sharper/brighter light than the two cell or the C-cell lights. I also like the heft as well. It gets lonely out there in the dark and we're close enough to the wilderness to get plenty of critters with pointy teeth. Not that a flashlight is the best security device, but it sure feels substantial. The four or more D-cell is a waste of batteries that's way more expensive to maintain with about the same quality light.
  6. It's not displayed on other posts for privacy. Only the person that is signed in with the handle can see it. Others cans see their own, but not yours and visa-versa. SierraDude
  7. I too have ordered my trusty GPS, an eTrex Legend. Great minds think alike Now the waiting game. It was shipped yesterday and I was told to expect it between Friday and Monday. I'm still hoping for today, since it was FedEx'd. I need it like I need another hole in my head right now though. This is the last stretch before the end of the semester and I have two papers coming due really soon, plus an insane amount of reading, but I still have eight hours a day with nothing allotted to it. Who needs sleep anyway!
  8. Thanks for the welcome everyone! Time, what's that? I'm so busy I've lapped myself twice, but I always have family time, and am always on the lookout for things we can do together, especially outdoors away from the boob tube! My son's five and I like to get him into other things besides the movie of the day. He loves being out doors, going on adventures, and looking for treasure, so this looks like a perfect fit. Hope the wife can keep up! *Looks over shoulder to determine if a dodge is in order* I know I picked a heck of a time of year to start this, but that's what they made warm clothes for. martmann - One of the members of Diettalk.com mentioned it as a way to get exercise. I've been going there for a little over a year and have dramatically changed my lifestyle, dropping 85 pounds so far. Got another 80 I'm working on right now, and I think this will help get me movin' as well as be a blast. Heck the wife is already starting to talk about gearing up to do this. How many can say that about their spouses regarding a cool hobby? Sissy-n-CR - Good lord what are you trying to do, showing me more fun stuff when I am still trying to figure out how I'm gonna do this little ad... hobby in the first place. TahoeJoe - I'll keep ya in mind as I go along. I may need some one to show me where the ropes are, let alone what you do with them once you find them.
  9. Hi all, I'm from Reno, NV, USA and love the outdoors. My 5yr old son loves maps and treasure hunts and we try to get out in the countryside as much as possible. I heard about geocaching on an unrelated forum and it intrigued me. Did some research and found the geocaching.com page. Wow! a lot of what I saw looks like a lot of fun. I told my wife the top of my wish list for x-mas is a GPS. I tracked down a couple of inexpensive ones, based on the recommendations of the site and gave her the info and invited her to look into it. Looks like I'll get my wish this year, so any helpful and/or fun advice would be greatly appreciated. Dude
