  1. Geocide! As a newb, learn something new. As a newb who was always been tethered to the Atari, Commodore, Nintendo, Sega, PS1, PS3, Wii, and X-box, or just the TV I can understand the frustration. My journey into caching started this past Summer. I used to live in CO. Used to love camping, mountain climbing, and skiiing. For a while I resided in HI. I surfed, and beached, but my favorite past time was to snorkel. Seeking out the treasures lost, or some really cool shells ( I called Ocean Gems, now more like Geoshells) , of course I had to head off to college, and so off to the East coast I went. After college , well then I grew up and technology took over, or was it the couch? There were no more hikes, snorkel trips, or camping. Not unless it was via a screen. Any rate one day sprawled out on my favorite couch, and just settling back into the swing of daily life, after just coming back from a trip in CA, and an awesome road trip up the coast, through Napa Valley and onto Yosimite with my Dad (Our 1st trip long story) , ahh life is great, so whats on the TV, a tech byte show, sounds cool, see what other technological gadget I can acquire. There is a segment on treasure hunting, turns out to be Geocaching of course. well after being at Yosimite, the great outdoors was calling, besides now there is something to seek out, sort of like snorkeling, just a bit more effort needed. Since then I have not used a PS1. It was so cool to find these caches, especially ones so close to my house, and this has been going on for how long? Amazing, sounds like fun. 1st 100, so cool, yeah some were not all that great, wish swag was a bit more creative, or intriguing, but oh well, still lovin it. I have 233 finds now and yep lately it does seem like you seek out a treasure box, with a pile of trash hidden inside. Yes , I believe there can be a better search or PQ filter set, IE: 1. A date search of last found. (Rather than last 7 days, have it where you set the date) 2. Broaden cache categories. IE Night Cache only (NCO), P&G Cache, Urban, Non-Urban, 24/7, and Traditional cache would mean a daytime only cache. I have 39 hides. Most of them have all been from CITO containers, from being a Chef, or on the trail I have several of these containers. From spice jugs, ketchup, and 5 gallon buckets. I love to hide the caches. I know some are not "Great" while some are. Some are quick P&G's, some were placed just for a night time or commuter caching expedition. For me the key is to keep them MAINTAINED! I make every effort to visit my hides, usually about twice a month I go out and check on them. I rotate the list, and if it has been visited and no problems reported i clear it till next months maint run, rather a simple process. Also when ever I swap swag, I TRADE UP! Usually I drop my Handcrafted Yawppy coin, and some nice swag pieces. Usually I may take a trinket, but for one trinket, leave a couple trinkets. Because yes I love to hike, but to treasure hunt , makes it all the more fun and now I have a mission. If however folks just stop caring on the swapping aspect, and start treating a cache like a "trache" can, well then eventually something has to give. Yep LPC's get boring, GRC's also. I am in the stage where I have learned how to place a creative cache, which we all love to seek. Or have I, I really find it hard to please all 700G+ cachers. Everyone likes something differently in this game. Much like cooking, be creative, and learn quickly. A geocide, well if that is what you want, cool, sad ta see ya go. sounds like as a caching community we need to teach, and learn, but just quit, hmm guess it is the easy way. By losing the elders, the game is up for grabs, because eventually if I want to seek out a "Trache Cache", I will just waymark on the GPS'r and hit the nearest 500 dumpsters with-in the 500 mile radius of where I stand .
  2. I have the eeepc also, let me know of any new tricks, I was at a caching event, som1 had a gps thing hooked up, still have not figured it out. The Garmin CO or Oregon work fine for paperless caching. Happy Caching
  3. My First FTP! Wow... K. will look into this cache.. I am in RI, so will have to see where abouts this cache is. I just recently aquired my Iphone, have not field tested it as of yet,but think I will stay with the GPS'r and use the Iphone for info and sat pics. Wherigo cartridges seem rare and complicated to set up. Till I get a coulpe under my belt, how am I to understand how thy function? Therefore think Wherigo will be a failure. Iphone has some possibilities tho, ty will get back with my ratings of your iphone cache happy caching
  4. Just was curious as to how you go about locking a topic, or delete it completely from the forums? I have not been able to shut one down, and noticed a couple locked topics. Happy Caching.
  5. The other day I came across a topic on the forum titled "whats in your bag?" ,sure many have gazed at it, I still have to find a way to post my pics, (Relativly new to the forums), and it is an interesting read, just to see if I am as bad as the next cacher, in terms of collecting Caching gadgetry. Before I got Geo-hooked, I was pretty well fine with my PC, PSP, TV, and the couch. I had a reg cell, no fancy internet, and a Nuvi 200, just to get around with. My basement, and the workbench down there was pretty much foreign territory to me, dreaded going there because it meant work, fixxing up something broken around the house. That was my life prior to July 08. Then one day the TV explained this Geocaching to me, wow. I at one time went out camping, and hiking, biked alot. When I lived in HI, used to snorkel, found all the tourists lost treasures, loved doing that. So this sounded interesting to me and off I went. K... So the other day when I came across the post, I was like ok.. lets take a look and inventory my caching gear, and all caching related gear. I dumped and gathered al caching gear from the car..cachemobile, and was quite amazed. If I could, should say when I figure out how to post pics I will, Would be a lot easier! The reason for this post is to see what kinda gadgets you have , ones you probably would not have if it wer not for caching, whats the craziest, whats the best, whats the worst of the caching gadget, or equipment? I now have 2 digital cameras, Had my original. Working just fine, so why do I need another. Well need one that is waterproof, dust proof, and shock proof, Right? Besides a back-up is always nice. 2 psp's Used to be my Ipod for on the trail, and one was for my early attempt to be paperless, Did a screen capture, and placed the JPG's on the PSP, But was to big, or to small, time consuming etc, (much to complicated tho!) that is where the CO 400t comes in. 3 GPS'rs, Originnally was using the Garmin Nuvi 200, Decided I needed a more outdoor style GPS'r, and got the Garmin CO 400t, and then heard that Garmin came out with an internet GPS'r had to get it, got to the store and got the Garmin220w.. ni internet monthly premium. Mini-Laptop Another gadget, probably did not need. Went out anyways and got a mini laptop, and it works, but stays in the cache mobile, and of course need to seek out WIFI. NVG's, .... OK probably on of my craziest gadgets yet. Heard of the cyclops NVG's. Decided to give them a tril run, and return later. Or keep if they worked out. Well being a toy, first nigh out and they are beat up. Good news is they work, but stand really still. But do help a bit for night caching, at least till I can afford the military spec NVG's. Iphone This is a story in itself. Still need the GPS'r, but it is nice. PQ's not as important anymore, 10 bucks and you can run as many pq's as needed, plus it finds your location. Pretty slick in my book. Just can not wait to field test this gadget. (Weather usually not a factor love snow, hate Snow-Rain-freezinfrain-Ice-and-slush-sleet, not so fun. K that is my list of gadgets, well the electronical ones, Sure there is many more gadget style items in the cachepack, but that will have to wait to see what happens this year. Oh and the workbench and basement , have become my most favorite spot in the house!, a bit crowded with all the "intended" cache containers, and crafting projects! K.. Happy Caching!
  6. I am a military brat. Have always enjoyed travel, technology, and outdoor activity. That was untill I was discharged (honorably) from the service myself. Went to college and found myself quite busy, working, and school projects. Much of my free time was spent in front of those T.V's, with a PS1, controller in hand, or a mouse. So after I graduated, I had met my current Wife, My plan was to head back to CO, or TX. But found myself trapped here in RI. I never really took the time to explore, sort of fel into the grind of couch tater. Till one trip this pasrt summer, to visit my dad in CA. We ended up on an awesome road trip, ending with Yosemite. The outdoor bug awoke. Got back to RI, whole summer off, and was watching TV, and was watching a tech toy show, seen these folks out locating geocaches. I had a car GPS'r, logged in and went for a couple nearby as evry1 else, next thing I know I am purchasing a CO 400t for a pretty penny. But 225 and still caching, and it is a blast! Best of all have re-caonnected to the outdoors, and have learned of so many new areas, as well as a cople new friends, Happy Cachin
  7. All so very much the truth. @ work more later, fun topic, just one quick one till off work, A cachet can never ever be ahead of all technological devices, as I post this from my newest gadget the iPhone! well back to work.. More later ty yawppy
  8. Well the big bad geocaching wolf is back! Not sure where to start. Yes, being a newbie I have made a few mistakes. Guess this all started when out with a cacher who believes in “tossing down” as I hear it is called. Well I felt it was a wrong thing to do, and have rectified the situations to the best of my abilities. The caches were not archived, actually just “temp disabled”, my mistake, STILL does not make a difference. At the time it seemed like a good idea/ and bad one all the same. Being ex-military I can handle quite a bit, and realize that the printed word can come across in a different way. I am no pulitzer award winning author myself. I am straight forward smart a**, and am not wishy washy, nor saddened because I did not receive the geocachers forums approval, nor he smiley. As I stated I agreed with the DNF, and the 2 caches in question have been deleted, and an additional one that is posted (which for the record WAS not the cache in question) here in this string has also been deleted. I found the lid and a sopping wet log, but had no suitable containers, and the owner was on his way to fix it, or so was my understanding. So technically that should have still with stood this forums audit. (Auditors) K I have only 226 finds, and still have not seen all the creative hides that we all can come up with... fine. The 2 that were in question, were 1/1 and were as obvious as white on rice. I did contact the owners, afterwards, KNOWING that the cache was missing, and was a micro, nothing more. I know when a cache has beaten me to a pulp, or when it is just not there. Of course I replace the logs when they are wet, leave an extra pencil, or replenish swag, , and what I gather is just leave the lost caches alone. Got it. Unless the owner is contacted. Fine by me. “so you're the guy who is doing that.” No I m not the guy who is doing that. I am relativity still a newbie, whom made an error. Wanted to see the general consensus on the topic, and correct my mistakes. All the while trying to “Play” a fair game of hide n seek, by checking with the referee's. He asked for opinions and received them. Now those who answered are accused of taking this too seriously? Or is it just those whose answers he didn't like? Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I took them all in. Some well are better stated than other, and yes could do with a little less sarcasm, but hell, I can be just as sarcastic to the next poster, or even the next newbie that ventures into these alligator waters. It comes with the territory, and the "invisible factor", or better known as the internet shield. Fac to Face, probably would not have to worry about the appearance of my or the other posters text. Kapow! IMO, you are developing some bad habits for a new cacher Who are you to tell me of my caching habits? All I was looking for was whether it was acceptable, or not, learned it from a cacher whom will remain un-named, and just wanted to be sure. So before I DO develop some bad caching habits, figured I would see what the general consensous was, check with the referees of this sport. Hell if that is a bad habit as a cacher, hell just shoot me a toss my GPS'r into the grinder, or furnace, your choice, better yet just go to N 19 49.258, W 155 28.629 and I hope you enjoy the trip. Sounds like it doesn't it. That's usually the way it is. When people ask for an opinion they really don't want opinions unless it's an opinion that supports what they do/think. It's funny when someone says they aren't interested in the numbers but then they replace a cache to be able to log a find. Again, numbers are not all that dear to me, yes it is fun to stay ahead of some fellow cachers, so they may have some importance. I do not need to log a smiley, I do need to seek and destroy a cache, but need to log a find, not really, and well really I do not even think the other cacher realizes this "competition", it is just my goal to stay ahead of him , but I will not "Fake" or drop a cache to do it, so bottom line nope numbers are not as dear to me as is the scenery. I have logged just as many DNF's as finds (Last count for all you auditors out there). One more time I have taken in evry1s “opinions”, whether well placed or in sarcasm, or just down right rude it may have been, that is life, and the world in which we all live. We all know why we go searching for those plastics, and tins. (And TY for the hide hints, will have to check on a couple caches that have been eluding me, one or two have DNF logs by me, some do not, sometimes I do not log the DNF till my 2nd time around, just to give some of you all a little more fuel for the firepit!) What an awesome idea! I'm going caching in future with a dozen or so micros. I am never going to log a DNF again! Best for last. Perfect example of mis-construing plain text for some thing else, oops, sarcasm. Guess one does not realize that I have only done this twice, and one lid with sopping wet log. Quote from OP” So here is what I did, I tend to carry several micros, (As do a few cachers) for an emergency hide, or in this case as a replacement.” An emergency hide, you are out see a great locale, I pop in a micro till I can get a proper sized cache in. This time I used it as a replacement cache, which we all know is wrong and has been rectified. NO LOG , NO FIND.. fine with me, was all I needed to hear, so now I can move on! wishy washy, , wah he did not delete the smileys, wah he is not happy with our opinions, wah wah wah, boy oh boy,, wah wah, he is the guy, wah wah geolitter, .. well guess enough said, We soon will know whom we speak of. TY for the support, they know who they are, and I have gathered why my PQ's are not coming out clean, TY and no I am not soured by this experience, just knowing that the answers are there just need to weed through the B##@ S$%@ and pretty much for me I am sure this will not be the end for this topic nor will it be my last Bring it on! Can not wait till this evening, should be quite an interesting read! Ding Ding Round 2 Happy Caching
  9. To me, this is a "wishy washy" response. You should delete your own find, and take the high road. How could you find a cache you hid? If someone ever replaced my cache with their "instant smiley gratification cache," I would delete their find. There was no "w-W" about (OK I agree with the DNF) I posted the find and notified the cache owner at the time of the "find", but by stating I agree with the DNF, meant I would change my log from found to DNF. YES I am DNF'ing the 2 finds, and will be removing the replacement. I had seen it done one time, being a newbie was not to worried, and when I came across a similar situation, did the wrong thing, however the decision i made, went well in the field, but now I see that it was an unacceptable, unethical decision, one which I will not ever do again. This caching was never about smileys, or numbers for me. More on the lines of an adventure into the unknown, Some do seem to take this all to seriously for my tastes. They know who they are. Just wanted to find out the ethical way to deal with a cache that you know the hidden location. It was all done with good intentions. I only posted it to get a general consensus on the topic, TY for all input, and Happy Caching
  10. OK . I agree with a DNF. I have posted to the cache owner, and if told them what I did, and if they wanted I would delete my find, or they they could chose to delete it, it is their choice, both times neither had a problem with the location, Both times were only micros replaced in definite hide locations, but no more. Guess I forgot to post that info at the beginning. Also I still would like to know as to why it is as to how I run a brand new fresh PQ, load the GPX to the GPS'r, the cache listing does not appear as archived. It should not even appear on the PQ inquiry, right?
  11. OK. not sure if this should be a start to a new topic, how ever I am going to tell the story and see what input I get back. I recently went to TN for Thanksgiving. Being my first road trip as a cacher, I did a PQ along a route. It gave me a GPX file, which I placed on the GPS'r. K I get near VA, and see a cache at a rest stop. I read the logs and it had a few DNF's, but it still was on the GPS'r. SO I go over to GZ, ( not far being in a rest stp. GZ contains 3 logical spots for a cache, a tree, , another tree, and the LPC. Well logic states the tree's just would not work for a cache, so it is under the Lamp cover, nope not there tho. So here is what I did, I tend to carry several micros, (As do a few cachers) for an emergency hide, or in this case as a replacement. I really did not want to DNF a cache when it was obvious as to where it was placed. So I headed back to the cachemobile, grabbed a bottle cap micro, signed the log, and replaced it at the logical location. Got on the cell to log, and that is when I realized it had been temp dis-abled for over a month or two, so I logged a find, and placed the notice as to what I had placed in the GZ area, placed it on my watch list. Still have not heard from the cache owner, but fellow cachers were happy to have a cache to find. Did a similar one yesterday, only one logical place, based on the cache owners clue, ( I am tall and have 3 holes, which one am I) I get to GZ, same situation as above.. so I did the same. I logged both as finds, I figure if finders can replace a log book, w\can we not replace an obvious hide? Or am I in the wrong. As a newbie I have some temp dis abled hides, and folks have logged a find, and me vice versa. If you TD or archive a cache listing, it still comes up in the PQ ( I use a CO 400t) , listings from a fresh PQ do not show up as archived, I have seen several like this. Did a fresh PQ, loaded the GPX, get out to GZ, and go to log it on my cell from GZ, to find out it was Archived. Groundspeak should fix this, until then, it is a find as I see it, just may need a little TLC.

  13. That book shelf you where going to build for the wife sits unfinished, but you have 37 new sig item ideas in progress on the workbench.--fits me, muggle wife not to happy! Wife is gone for the night, and the moon is fully lit, 4 new caches pop up.. off you go for a little FTF night cach, thinking your wife will never know after all you will be home before she gets home.. right? ..nope. she beats you home at midnight wondering where the heck you are! Let the games begin! I am a chef, so been collecting all our what used to be Trash" the old ketchup, dressing, bottle caps spice containers.. and now co-workers are bringing in their old tupperwares,, basement workbench, is jammed full of cache containers, and swag, cache hide idea are rampant, addicted nope, not me. (Denial..yep) Since caching.. PC time is now all caching research, before was video game time, stumble it,or youtube time. Are down with a cold. And can not remember how to operate the PS2, Wii, or x-box, which input, or what X,O,[],^ .. even do. Wake up 4 am, just to head into the Dark woods for a small bison, or regular ammo can, stay out till midnight, not an addict, just dedicated. Cachers are not addicts, just a dedicated, committed, and consumed in a hobby that involves some cool Star Wars technology!
  14. Mom just bought 1st GPS, a Tom Tom, Will it work for caching? I just recently showed my Mom my past summer adventures caching. She was quite interested as only a mom can be. So I never expected her to really want to cache, just figured she would be interested in her Son's activities, and that was it. How-ever I am happy to say she is geting ready for an adventure that will never end, caching, went out and bought a Tom Tom. Now I know I have heard of these, but have yet to met a cacher with one, and it seems like software is more geared towards Garmin. So I need to investigate and see, told my mom, that Garmin would be better, but her receipt for return is short lived, have 15 days, should she switch or not? Will Geocache support a Tom Tom? TY If possibble, E-mail me respones at jawppy_2@yahoo.com (Due to time constraints and work would be helpful)
