  1. I too have jumped into many lakes. Ihop has potato cakes? Have never lost the GPS'r ( Go buy a new one) Vinny is the head of maintenance @ PCD, a nice fellow.
  2. I love the FTF race. Of course I have several factors to consider, time, distance, and whether or not I am at work or family obligations. So I love em' , but will not go out of the way, unless it seems promising. My most memorable , well 3 stick out, My 1st FTF, was perfect, I had about 50 finds, and seemed to always miss em', then I learned about notification,a, one popped up, and being a rainy day, felt for sure this would be my FTF day. Fangorn Forest, nice muddy, and FTF, got a Dunkin coffe out that one! My second was a moonlit night 4 FTF run, just off work, wife at work, nothing to do, had some new NVG's and head lamp to try out, so off I went, turned out the moon was full, and did not need the NVG's, but tried em' anyways! My next and last was just last night, a "?" cache, actually was not an FTF, but was a night time effort, get to GZ , to see the shadowy figure of the FTF scoundrel skirting away from GZ. LOL, still my first "?" & the ftf guy does usually get all ftf's in our area, so felt good to know my web research has paid off, and soon I may be competition for this guy!
  3. I am on my Iphone querty keyboard, so for now will just state one and come back later with the rest: I would like to see a DNF map icon (red cache icon) similar to the current disabled icons, i think it would make it easier for a cacher to relocate caches attempted. For now that is all, have lot more but will need reg key laptop to properly input , great topic!
  4. You're examples are grandfathered caches. Yawppy, Read the Support Our Troops thread. Read it, Sound so much more exciting than this forum took on. Yep just not sure what qualifies as an agenda, seen the second page of this post has been hijacked, but oh well, thanks for the input, the cache was posted, I reluctantly removed the Intro, and well guess that is the way it goes.
  5. I agree. I hid my first one after my 5th cache or so. I started caching July 08, as of today I have 255 F and 45 Hides. I have 3 archived hides. It is a learning process as is anything else. It is a hobby, almost everyone has played hide & go seek as children, so I think hide as you wish, just be sure to maintain what you hide. My first hide was a multi, CORDS got mixxed up, I got a lot of slack for that one. Most of my caches are of a creative CITO types. Rather than some plastic tupperware or ammo can ( I have only 1 ammo can hide ) Some are simple, some are just bottle cap nano's. Hiding is as important to this game as finding them are. To set a min find limit, well just would not work. I sometimes rather just hide the items, easier and I know where they are. My biggest thing is maintenance. I keep up with the ones I have out, set up an excell sheet and do a check on several regulariy. So I say hide em, hide em, and MAINTAIN THEM, simple, hard, clever, or whatever, have fun! Be creative , not all caches have to be plastic tupper and ammo cans!
  6. Quick in out comment on the geo cache sticker actually a quote to add to the fire: "Assistant Fire Chief Mike Winter added that the stickers identifying a container as a geocache aren't going to change the way the bomb squad deals with them. Anyone could put those stickers on, Winter said, possibly to disguise an ..." Bomb Squad Finds another G-cache So I really do not think they are going to stop just because of a label, 9/11 has changed everyday life. The container can be clear, labeled clearly, have permission from god, it will not matter. Muggle spots it, Ka Boom. 800 numbers and educating 1st responders may help, doubtful, sure everyone can agree, as kids we all love to blow up stuff, and bomb squads are full of them kids. One of the things that i enjoy from this hobby, has been the stealthiness of it. The amazement that I never knew about this till this past Summer, as widely broad casted as this hobby is, there are still many muggles ,STEALTH! Stealth is an intrical part of this hobby, hide your stash well, and finders hide it as found, no more laying sticks in a tell tell manner, and just keep it hidden, and practice good stealth!
  7. A lot of good points. I was just trying to be respectful of the area In which I placed a cache. Currently the cache in question is still pending review after the deletion of original intro. Love the cache listing, (quoted) what is the difference between thankful, and honor our veterans. I understand GS has policies as any other company, and it falls on the reviewers. I have no issue with that, but I have an issue when it is not an evenly applied policy. I do know that many a cacher will pay their respect in their own way, this is a free country, because of them defending our country. But when I read a cache listing honoring a dead Farmer buddy, whom got ran over by a tractor, or the cache listing that is honoring a casino patron, whom wandered of into the path of a car, and as brave, cute and adorable as our pets are,how many tribute or social agendas do they pose. In my opinion, just by me placing a cache, is implementing a social agenda, I am enticing someone to a location, whether it is a monument, scenic view, or what ever, It is still stating something, I am still implementing my point of view upon some one, yes there is a choice, to go or not, all the same. Tragic or triumphant as they may be, what is the difference why can they honor them, and I can not be thankful for our service members. One policy.. should be for all cache listings.
  8. I am just curious as to what the caching community feels about tribute caches. For or against them. Right or Wrong. the reason Is below pretty much the whole story: Recently I found the coolest cemetery cache since I started caching. This was at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, usually cemetery caches are ok, usually they are located on the out skirts. I am fine with them. I seen a cache on the GPS'r, did an Iphon map search, and realized it was with in the cemetery grounds. To me that seemed bad and dis-respectful to our Veterans whom have fought for our country. Reading the listing, it appeared to be on a trail. So I went, and was pleasantly pleased with it, being a great memorial cemetery, with a trail system. As I was leaving, down the road, was a prk of sorts across from the RI Veterans Cemetery, had a cool spot for a cache. Iphoned for close by caches, not a one with in .4 miles. cool, popped open the trunk. selected one of the many pre-mde caches, and proceeded to hide it. Cool. Being a military brat, with a family full of military service, this was the best. The cache listing intro went like this: "Cache is located in a haunted location. CORDS above will lead you to hallowed ground, a place to say Thank-you to our past, present and future Veterans, and Service men and women." It was not published. the following was posted: 1. Please give me a little more information on how and where the cache is placed, particularly the nature of the memorial. 2. We do not publish cache pages that honor or memorialize people as such things constitute a social agenda. We're not saying that any of us personally dishonor veterans or members of the armed forces, but if we allow cache pages honoring one group we would have to allow cache pages that honor all groups - and that could lead us to a place where we do not to be. When you are ready to have the cache page reviewed again, please click on the enable listing link in the navigation pane or check the active box on the cache edit page. Thank you for your understanding. Groundspeak volunteer reviewer I shortened the intro: "CORDS above will lead you to hallowed ground, a place to say Thank-you to our past, present and future Veterans, and Service men and women." Reviewer note I stated that it was in a park located outside the cemetery, and that it was not a memorial with in the cemetery, or tribute to a single person, or group. Response back: Yawppy, it will be necessary to remove the sentence below. CORDS above will lead you to hallowed ground, a place to say Thank-you to our past, present and future Veterans, and Service men and women. [view this log on a separate page] I responded back, after removing the intro with: Seems a bit too politically correct for my liking. How ever it is not you I am just ranting to, rather I am speaking of g.s policy that you are enforcing, it is just not right. I still can not understand as to why we can not pay tribute to the service men and women whom are fighting, or have given their lives , makes no sense, esp when there are tribute caches for dead friends family, pets and just recently vampires. Being a vet of the First Gulf War, and having my Grandpa serving in WWII, Dad serving in the Vietnam War, and currently a Sister, and Brother-In-Law serving in Iraq, and Afghanistan, as are some friends, this is a touchy subject for me. I apologize, but I just have to protest this. Being politically correct is just another form of prejudice , my opinion of course, but seems correct. K that is all, once again I apologize but feel the need to change my cache intro under protest is the right way to go, the fight never ends. =================================================================== K I have stated my case, yes this is a hobby, but was there really anything wrong with this or any other tribute cache? As I have stated, I have visited caches where a guy's best budy was rn over by a tractor, another was a tragic car accident, and of course several lost pets, and then there are the cemetery tributes to vampires, or famous unknown graves.
  9. I have found 234 cachwes with my CO 400t. recently needed a new phone. Of course the I-phone seemed to pop up and into my eager hands. I went for one cache with I-phone only, well started off that way. Still went to the CO. Calibrate the compass, and felt like it could weather the terrain, and elements much better than my precious new I-phone. The Iphone works great for additional, clerical tasks, and I love having sat pics at hand to assist in cache location. But just can not get used to using it for a solo GPS'r, love the way it can locate the nearest cache, and additional Info.
  10. I started caching this past Summer, with a Nuvi 200, quickly upgraded to the CO 400t. I also now have an Iphone. Like the many posts prior, Battery power, and the element of destruction from the many adventures caching will take you , will not help keep that Iphone from falling into a river, tumbling down that cliff, nope the pristine.condition will be gone. sure you can charge it in the cache-mobile, but it will be hard to protect from the elements. I do use my I-phone, mainly in the cache-mobile, and once in a while for sat pics of the area, and to check the listing, and log the find or DNF. Otherwie it is tucked safely away in the swag sack. I would suggest getting a handheld, outdoor style GPS'r, has a better GPS chip set, and are designed for the outdoor elements , much better than the I-phone.
  11. Yep the I-phone, it a niche that is quite small. I loved the contact Idea, will have to set that up, been looking for ways to track progress on puzzle caches, that should help. I downloaded the GS caching program, works ok, but noticed a few other Apps. One in particular is the Geocaching Buddy, any one use it? Good bad etc? Do love the I-phone as a sat map, and it does help seek out close by caches, well TY for the Contact method.
  12. Agreed. If they keep them maintained, saves you money and time. Plus maybe you can rack up a few FTF. One thing I do is place my hides on Geocache territory. If there is a saturation issue, I leave it, and post it in the cache grave yard sites. ( Yes there are other caching sites out there) Being that Groundspeak has a tremendous caching population, saturation is high. The other sites are practically wide open with a huge playing field. One of my "other" hides was in a great scenic area. The GPS'r stated I was far enough from the cache I just found, there were no others. So I hid a cache right then and there, posted, and it came back as a C.S issue. So I left it in place, just listed it else-where. It has been found 5 times in the last 5-6 months, but it is there. So remember G-T-N-cache. Sure there are others, so never worry, there will be plenty of space for one of your hides, I have a whole state, not many other caches other than G caches where I am, excluding the 4 other caches I placed on other sites.. ave a GREAT PLAYING FIELD, AMAZING!
  13. TY for the Idea. yes most have been her on the east coast.. howver my dad lives in CA, so I visit and will drop a few of course. Again TY

  18. I have pics. Will have to figure out how to size them. Actually I will post them on picasa and link to them. Yep they are a "wooden Nickle", usually I find a good walking stick, it ends up in the trunk, and so now I slice it, sand it, engrave, colorize, and shellac. K should have the pics posted here later today, seems to cold to be out seeking Popsicles-caches! Then you never know, the bug may just grab me and off I go, Hint any new RI caches popping up? I need a new FTF! Happy Caching!
  19. Reading the forums and am noticing that : Swag deterioration. Trache caches. (Trash + Cache = Trache-cache, a cache that evolved into a trash can) Geocide's I am a newbie to Geocaching. I have also found out about Terracaching, or as I call it The Geocache graveyard. With only 233 finds, I too am starting to wonder why should I be out looking for a Trache-cache? I hand create my own signature swag, and have always traded up, here lately been leaving swag, just because a reg cache has no swag, and is on the verge of becoming a Trache-cache. We have all seen them, golf balls, demolished toys, left over lunches, driveway gravel, beer bottles, milk caps with a date, sticks, shards of glass, and even poo, yes poo or if you prefer S#%$, crap. For the children, swag is well you know, so cool, for me I too love a little treasure, sort of childish, yes, but so fun. After the poo incident, I am very cautious in taking the geo-brats out caching. With so many yard sales, thrift , craft, hardware, home improvement, party, and discount stores, swag can be inexpensive and fun part to geocaching. I have found cache containers at yard sales, unique ones and some even free. Savers, Goodwill, Salvation Army-- usually bundle some cool toy' swag, and usually these baggy specials cost $2.. and have 15- 25 pieces ranging from plastic dinosaurs, to those match box cars, barn animals, sports cards etc. Which brings me to recent, I have heard many a cacher state they are not in it for the swag, TNSL. I noticed that there is another GPS game called Geodashing.com, so why Geocache if you are not swapping swag? I guess my question is this. Is the future of geocaching the land of LPC's, GRC"s, MPC's, and trache-caches? (Lamp Post , Guard Rail, Muggle Prone) What are your basic caching guidelines, or caching ethics? What is the sickest swag you have found? (Poo, dead animal, drugs etc) What has been your coolest find swag , or scenic cache? What future do you see in regards to geocaching, terracaching, Waymarking, or geodashing? OK, have a fine day of Popsicle hunting! It is a nice sunny icy cold day for it, may need that Ice pick! Happy Caching!
  20. Google.. works great. I love to search out new geocaching information and have quite a few links. From Gsak, log sheet templates, decrypting and encryptying tools to coordinate mappers. I have been looking for a one page solution. A page that has the distance calculators, the mappers, the links to templates, deciphering tools, to encrypting tools, etc. It seems when ever I start planning a caching event or hide, I have a lot of windows and tabs open. So to simplify I been googling, and have yet to find a one stop solution. Which probably does not exist, and what I am looking for is much to complicated to express via text, but what web links, or web apps are on your favorites?
  21. I have left as swag my Yawppy Coin. I did not TB' them and am just curious as to their where abouts. Kinda of a let's see what happens query. A Yawppy coin is my handcrafted wooden coin. I made 100 or so. Noticed that after re-visiting some caches that they were swapped. I know I could have TB'd them. But I chose not to. I wanted to more or less do a message in a bottle thing. Set them free and see where they float off to, let the wind carry them off to where ever they land. If you believe you have acquired on, feel free to post a pic and well cool beans! TY Yawppy
  22. Wish more cachers would read the forums. Yep lately the swag has been herendous, been more like hunting down a Trache cache. I love to find cool trinkets, my favorite so far, and I use it caching was a clippy collapsible pen! Where to get cool swag. Well of course the $ store (Of course) Goodwill Salvation Army Savers, This one they wrap kids toys on a baggy, and sell for a buck or 2 for 10-20 swag pieces Thrift stores. I Party, Craft stores YARD SALES! Amazing besides you can haggle, plus get freebies! My favorite is from the caching grounds them selves. I handcraft walking sticks, and my signature Yawppy coin ( Coin from wood found in the woods shelaced and engraved) Caches seem to like them, have not TB'd them yet. But they do not seem to stay in caches, so anyone who has one, would love o hear from you as to where they are etc. (Hey a new forum topic!)
