  1. I would have thought trying to Favourite a cache the is owned by you would totally defeat the object of the favourite vote system. Surely it is much better that the cache is voted for by other cachers, so that you can see just how much it is really appreciated. That way if it is truly a good cache it will attract votes which in turn will attract more cachers and again even more votes. Bu notching the count up yourselves you will only attract a few more visits but not more votes. However on a side note it would also be nice if we had a golden vote for those really special caches, maybe one golden vote for every 100 caches found.
  2. Thought i bump this back up to see how everyone else feels about it. I have had a look again and logged all my duplicate finds and the coverage is still rather poor. I only managed to log 4 caches out of the 1600 that i have found, and if it continues at this rate i think it will totally die off. But i think it has pushed GC on a bit, i am fairly sure that opencaching was responsible for the Favourites being added. What does everyone else feel about it now that the dust is starting to settle?
  3. Sounds as though was thought about, and it will make it a special find for those that seek it.
  4. Is the map enabled? press set up select maps then map imformation and check it is enabled Or check you are on the same profile as you will need to enable the map in different profiles.
  5. Go For it Having had a Colorado which i found cumbersome with the rock and roller and time consuming adding field notes and waypoints i upgraded to the oregon 300 and have not looked back. I love it and find it so much nicer to use, it uses the same format for layout so you wont struggle with the change. Also any extras you have maps leads etc will still be usable. One recommendation is the use of a screen protector i would recommend a Zagg.
  6. Starting with the original Post Why ... because i enjoy it. For many of the reasons listed above. For the technology bit of it... its what is coming... get used to it. I lead a Scout group and we teach the young people in our charge to use paper maps and compass, GPSr and the stars for navigation. Also when i go Caching i use the same maps and compass as i would normally, but these are in an electronic form on my GPSr, and if i am going out along way from home i take a paper map and compass as a back up.
  7. Hi and welcome along to the obsession. First stay in the nice warm comfort of your home, Caching in the snow is hard! Not only trying to find the cache but to keep it hidden from others, its easy to follow someone in the snow. Instead have a look at the "?" puzzle caches, the Co ords at the top of the cache page are generally a starting point and the cache is generally within a couple of miles of the reported location. So you have to deduce from the cache page where the cache actually is,this is often easier said than done. Have a look at a few and look at the difficulty of the cache and depending on your mind set select the easier ones to start with. Usually there will be a way in to the puzzle somewhere in the description, something like " i always play fair" this would give you a hint that it involves a "playfair" cypher (have a look for it in Wiki)What ever the puzzle involves you should at the end of it be left with a set of coords which will be where the cache is located. So then go and look for it, some cachers use a checksum ( all the digits of the coords added together = checksum) or they use a geochecker with a link on the page. If the cache is not there you got it wrong. But dont be afraid to contact the setter for a clue, they generally will help with a hint and after all they want the cache to be found. Good luck
  8. I was going to ask if you had much snow there
  9. Hi Dr D How do you access the OS maps in order to add them? I have the full range on MM at 1:25,000 is this any good. Give me a clue please, you can post me via my profile for privacy. Thanks for the suggestion.
  10. Went out to try this new map in the field a couple of days ago. I tried using it on the Sat Nav, rout-able on road setting and at first it worked. I had set the GPSr up to navigate to the first cache with the Discoverer map switched on travelled to the area covered by the new map and then switched off the discoverer map and the GPSr continued to navigate with the Birdseye map, but later when i tried to navigate away with the discoverer still switched off it through a wobbly and could not do it. So my conclusion is that these Birdseye maps are not rout-able, not so good on that score then. But when on foot the new mapping came in to its own. The clarity was superb and the accuracy was spot on allowing us to navigate accurately and keep to the correct paths even at complicated junctions. Even at stages where the obvious thing to do was to continue along the path which would have ended up with us having to double back along a road or path further down when it would have become obvious that we were on the wrong path. Also in wooded area where the discoverer map at 1.50k show just a green wooded area, the Birdseye maps revealed all the tracks that were on the ground. So my conclusion on the map in general: Well worth the money for accurate clear and concise information for walking, but not so good for satnav work. So i will be buying more sections probably for holiday area before i go and possibly extending the area around home for those more local excursions.
  11. I dont like it so much, whether it is because you get used to one thing and the change is never good. The bit i have missed the most is the "top" tab to get you back to the start or top of the page, or am i missing it? I also much prefer the IP Board setting, much friendlier on the eye. Oh well changes like these may well put people of using the forum all together.
  12. I recieved this email: "Greetings burtsbodgers, Congratulations! You have been awarded the Niedersachsen Souvenir. This Souvenir was retroactively awarded to you based on your Geocaching.com find history. Souvenirs are virtual pieces of art that you can uncover in the world. They are usually associated with a particular location but may also be bound by time. To view your new Souvenir, login and visit: http://www.geocaching.com/my/souvenirs.aspx Learn more about Souvenirs http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?p...page&id=272 Happy Geocaching! Cheers, The Groundspeak Team" However their does not seem to anything other than my 101010, dont know why is there any way of finding out what it should be for and what it looks like, just out of curiosity or did i just kill a cat
  13. Thanks for asking. Keep Sunday July 22nd 2012 free in your calendar. We're waiting to hear back from Groundspeak on a potentially very exciting development which may sway our choice of venue (due to number of expected visitors) but the meeting Deci links to was very productive. Our final choice of area has been shaved down from several to two; Oxford and Brighton. Both have pros and cons but both have a lot to offer the international as well as domestic visitor and we've a raft of plans for external events as well as various caching-based challenges (including a 26mile 385yd cache series, cycle series, swimming/boating series, icon challenge, D/T grid challenge and more) and Mega camping, dog-friendly event, CITO event etc. Because of the ambitious scale needed to attract the unique annual icon that we've proposed to Groundspeak planning is an extensive undertaking but a great group of cachers have come together to offer a very special Mega (or perhaps a 'Mega-Mega' - a better name TBC!): Drsolly; Europe’s leading geocache finder (17.4k+). Metal-Bijou; inspirational force & international Mega bagger. Simply Paul; the UK’s leading cache event organiser (33, with 4 more waiting to be listed) Dorsetgal and Geodog; Olympic torch bearer & Inclusive/HandiCaching champion. Alibags; a key face of the Bucks, Beds & Herts caching scene & event series. Purple_Pineapple; Ideas people with a passion for interesting events, including 5 10 Years! meets! A development website is already online and waiting to roll once there are more confirmed details and a big announcement or two are just around the corner. For the sake of the 2011 Wales Mega team, who have their big day in Swansea on Sunday 31st July 2011*, we've deliberately been keeping a low profile (plus July 2012 is still 19 months away!) but clearly people are interested in what we've got planned - or at least curious - so we won't be keeping you on tenterhooks for too much longer. *We've confirmed a stand there. Come along and meet the team, see the 'Gold, Silver and Bronze' supporters packs we'll be offering, and have a chat about what we hope will be the UK's first 2k+ attendee event (that's if Wales don't beat us to that goal, of course!) All sound good From here Brighton is closest but Oxford could be on the way up to the Lakes for a double Mega Holiday
  14. I dont know about the DeLornes so cant comment on those, but i have worked my way through the Garmin range The Colorado is a very robust machine and stands up well to knocks and scrapes, but is cumbersome to use but is a very good unit. The Oregon is a little more fragile because of the touch screen but is a lot easier to use. Both machine have a range of models and the higher the number the more bells and whistles you get, Both take micro SD cards for additional maps. The "T" at the end of the model 450T denotes that it comes with the Garmin Topo map pre installed, although these are relatively basic maps ( at least here in the UK ) but you can add better maps to the machine many of which are free and the units allow switching between the maps in the field, although best not to swap Sd cards outside as they can be very difficult to spot if you drop them! Generally the higher the number the more internal memory and extra features you get, this could turn out to be worth while but only if you need them. I have the Oregon 300 with the garmin Discoverer maps for the UK which is a very good set up and i have just added a portion of the Birdseye maps which have even more detail giving a ratio of 1:25,000 This is a very easy set up and probably the best i have ever used and even allows me to use the unit as a sat nav for driving. It holds up to 2000 caches with the cache page info which allows for spontaneous caching trips and holidays. I Could go on... but i must do some work
  15. I have just tried to generate mine and although i have recieved a notification email stating that it had been generated when i check in my pocket queries it is not there
  16. Just had a look at comparable OS Paper maps. The area if my calculations are correct of a OS Explorer map is approx 372sq km at a cost of £13.99 for the active version. So conclusion on the pricing very good, as you get almost twice the area for £19.99, as long as my sums where correct as the web does no actually tell you the square area covered by the map.
  17. Do you download it to the PC and then to the GPSr or straight to the GPSr? Hi Down load to the PC first, but it gives you the option to send to device once it has completed. I saved to PC first then struggled to get it on my GPSr, but should not have worried as it saved it to the devices memory and not the map sd card. Here is a screen shot of the map Bottom is more or less the area covered in 600sq km, top is a screen shot zoomed in for detail: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...f3-2f3d7cda2ca4
  18. Ok so the forums were down for most of the day today, so i had to find something to do! So i downloaded basecamp from Garmin and set that up and then paid my £19.99 for a 600sqKM map segment, which was surprisingly easy to do. The section i downloaded was 44mb and took about 6 minutes, you can choose the layout of the section as long as it is square or rectangular in form. i chose an area that is local to me so i could cache in that area easier. The map detail is pretty much the same as the discoverer series of maps, and has the same basic system, as in , you start when zoomed out with the Streetmap view and as you zoom in the map switches over to the 1.25,000. The down side is that at high zoom the map still blurs after 80-120' the same as the discoverer maps. You also have to disable the discoverer maps to get to the 1:25k. I am not sure whether these maps are rout-able yet as i have not tried, should be able to feed back after the weekend. So the comparison is the same as comparing the pink OS 1:50k maps and the orange OS 1:25k maps, the latter being less cluttered and therefore easier to read and follow but at the same time including more detail. Obviously if you have a discoverer map installed that is 1:25k this wont be much help for the ones you have, but if like me you have the 1:50k maps it could be beneficial but not necessary. I think the main benefit and use of these maps will come at holiday times, when you could download the area that you are staying in and then get a better feel for all the secret little paths that just dont show up on a 1:50k map. Value for money? not sure? but compared to buying a paper map, probably has the same area on it (i will try and find out and let you all know) i think the birdseye is a bigger area. Then yes! as this will be as up to date and is saved to your pc (back it up) and should last as long but probably wont! as i cant see you finding this in 20 years time behind the fridge
  19. Tell us more, without having to search, what is the GC number? It's GC1CAPD 'Who do you think you're kidding Mr Hitler' http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...db-51b06ac84da3 And what a great cache it is... Would love to know if there are more if some one has a list
  20. Hi Chris This is the link to GPS Training: http://www.gpstraining.co.uk/
  21. I like the map (and already have the paper and Anquet versions). As the map is produced by the IOM Government's official mapping service it's no indicator to the quality of any other mapping available from Garmin. Oh well it was worth asking looks like i might have to take the plunge just so we can all find out what it is like .
  22. There will be a Mega Camping event. We're still looking at venues for the camping at the moment and the camping event itself can't be published until February 2012 because of the listing guidelines, but as soon as we have a venue booked we will announce it on our website, Facebook and the national forums. Thanks i will keep my eyes open
  23. I know its still early but anyone know a suitable campsite or are there plans for another Mega Camping close to the Event? Would be nice to get somewhere for all the campers to book and meet up at.
