  1. Well according to this it should be a 3 star, the location is flat, paved and close to parking but the container itself is very hard to spot even though it is out in the open and close to a marker. But the cache is extremely well camouflaged, hence the difficulty in finding.
  2. Hi all This cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=00285a43-6206-47d2-b2b6-ce6693c8db05&log=y&decrypt= one of my devious caches seems to be harder to find than i thought it would. So the question is can i change the Difficulty or even should i? Looking through the logs it would seem that it has been missed more times than it has been hit! The consequences of the change will alter some cachers stats, so i dont want do do this willy nilly. opinions welcome as i am not sure, so please have a look and let me know.
  3. Thats funny i did not see the event listing Congratulations to both of them and may all the little ones to come start of as nano's
  4. Hand helds tend to be more robust and have battery battery life. Also with the right maps installed the Garmin Oregon( which i have ) can be used as an automotive GPSr with good results
  5. It should not make a difference to your position in the list, however the more changes you make can slow the process down as the reviewer needs to see all the corrections. The reviewers also have a personal life and do this in their spare time, if they have any, so you may need to be patient. Also make sure you tick the box on the edit listing screen that enables the reviewer to see the listing, from memory its a little way down from the top of the page. Good luck with your first cache.
  6. As Said above, the right tool for the job! I however use my garmin Oregon for both I have maps installed and i select a cache in the Automotive mode which gives me directions to the cache, in the form of beeps and on screen display ( doesnt talk to you ). When i arrive at my destination, the closest on road point to the cache, i switch profiles to geocaching and walk in to find the cache. It works for me.
  7. Thanks for the replies, its been a couple of years since i did my last one. So now to check how close but how long it would take to set up an after flash drink
  8. Hi All Flashmob season is on the way with the next due on the 4th June But i would like to know the proximity rules for a follow on from the main event, i seem to recall that the follow on needs to be 30 minutes from the flash event. But does this have to be by car or can it be by foot or bike. I have looked through the resources and forums but can not find anything. Any help would be gratefully received.
  9. Thanks Andy Got it to work The only thing i have noticed is that when i make a map segment i have to zoom in on the pc to more or less the zoom level i require on the GPSr. This means i can only select a small area at a time if i want the area to have a clear image. Is there a way of selecting a bigger area in one go or is the trade off to be able only to select small areas at a time, something for nothing if you see what i mean.
  10. HI is it only on a particular cache? mine are working ok. Which browser are you using and have you updated it recently?
  11. It may be worth divulging which sat nav you have as it may be good or useless. GPSr's are available on ebay and such the like. A lot of people use Mio's which are PDAs harder work to set up and shorter battery life but generally cheaper than GPSr's that are capable of doing the same thing. The easiest GPSr's to use tend to be the more expensive ones.
  12. As far as i can work out it is much easier. I have not used GSAK at all, although i did have a look a while back. With the oregon just plug it into your PC When your pocket query comes through just open the attachment and a new window will appear asking what you want to do with the file. Extract the file directly to the GPX file on the Oregon, job done. All the waypoints and caches will be on the Oregon with the descriptions and the last few logs. The only thing missing will be HTML coded bits and pictures, if they were on the cache page. When the next query come through just overwrite the file, or go into the gpx file and delete the files maunually. Email to GPSr in around 20 seconds and then out caching a few minutes later
  13. It would nice if they done them in a pretty camo pattern though
  14. Mine is working ok, try clicking the beta map link as well
  15. Hi sorry but i am not in your area but you may be better off asking in the UK section of this forum http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=35 or on the GAGB Forum
  16. Before buying the discoverer maps, try Mobile Atlas Creator. It free and although you can only do small sections of map at a time (about 100 Km^2 of 1:25K) I don't find this an issue as it is quick and easy to create a map when you need it. If it doesn't suit your needs, you've not lost anything. I have started to have a look at this but as yet i am unable to make it work, any chance of some pointers?
  17. Where on earth did you find that? Now that would be telling. Well it doen't appear to be my one unless you have not logged it yet
  18. No wonder mine seem to keep going missing! Out of the 6 i legitimately collected 3 would appear to be missing, that potentially £120 i could have had in my pocket But then again i would not collect them i am happy collecting those lovely little smileys on the map.
  19. If you buy one in the US don't forget that any built-in maps will be US maps and not European maps. You can get a worldwide basemap from Amazon.com in the US, but yeah - red channel / green channel, not a problem... I know! I usually just end up buying clothes and makeup when I'm there, but I'm not intending to shop as heavily as usual this time around!! Dont worry about the world wide base map as this is on the unit anyway no matter where you buy it from but has little more than an outline of the continent you are on, well nearly. But you can still add Talky Toasters maps or use any you have for the colorado. But if you are saving money buying the unit, buy the Garmin Discoverer map for you area, now they are worth their weight in paper
  20. I have looked at both caches and they are both listed as mystery caches which would be correct,
  21. Sorry but i could not make GROPE work, but having met some of the reviewers how about GURNERs Grand Union of Reviewers Not Enviromental Rotters. Well i tried only sort of gurning smiley i could see
  22. The only thing to limit the type of caches you hide is your imagination. Every where you look you can see something that would contain a log book or more, the secret is where would it fit in and if you think others will enjoy finding it. One of the best series that we have done just had normal containers, but where hidden in tricky ways, using pulley's and string up in trees or under bridges. Another series made it difficult to actually sign the logs, you needed to take an array of tools with you to open the containers. For one good one you needed to take a battery and find a circuit board with wire sticking out and you need to power the circuit by connecting the wires up, 10 sets of wires each wire had a part set of co ords by it and the two that switched the bulb on where the ones you needed to find the cache. The thing to do is let your imagination run riot and see what you can come up with.
  23. Hi and welcome to the obsession. Try and stick with the easier traditional caches to start with and find your feet. The series caches are great fun but it is easy to loose your way and not find the actual cache, and this can be disheartening to the younger ones although the dogs wont actually care to much. Keep an eye on your goals for this hobby as it can quickly turn into an obsession, but we really enjoy it and actually get withdrawal symptoms when we cant get out! The kids really do enjoy it but dont forget to trade fairly or trade up, keep an eye out for trackables these can add another dimension but remember to move them on and dont keep them for too long. Also keep an eye open for local meets, often a very good source of local info to help you find the really fun caches. Good luck and watch where you put your feet.
  24. When you get the PQ email, open the download file and a new window will pop up. in the selection on the left hand side will be the option to "Extract all files" this will offer you to save the files to a specific location. Browse where you want to save it to and click my computer and you will see your GPSr Icon click on this then on garmin then on GPX file then ok and the files will be added.
