  1. There's a whole other issue ... cachers handle the container ... probably after swinging by McDonalds for that breakfast McMuffin ... you're never going to get past things like that. Probably sticking with a chew proof container is really the only solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  2. I just picked up one at Radio Shack last month to use on one of our new laptops in China ... so far so good ... used it to hook up and old model scanner. I think it was about $39. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

Pop me an email with a return email and I'll be happy to send it out to you ... it's a PDF file about 335KB in size. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  6. I never use the battery saver mode and I never have the compass on unless I'm using it ... but I consistently get 10 to 12 hours or more. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  7. Old habits are hard to break ... I love my Lensatic Military compass with Trilium markers. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  8. Most of us have felt your pain. Trust me on this one ... there are worse places to get chiggers than the legs or arms ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  9. I've done a little more experimenting ... the vinyl electrical tape that I substituted for the clear vinyl tape to seal the seam and buttons works great ... so far the "rubber band" is holding with the reseal ... ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  10. quote:Originally posted by Team Og Rof A Klaw:only problem on mine was lockups. Do you remember the software version that gave you problems? I haven't experienced anything like that with mine so far. 11. Yeah, I just got approved as well ... awaiting the software myself ... I didn't really do for the mapping software ... sounded like something to do ... since I like to hike the area trails anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  12. Got caught speeding back from a last minute cache in 2001 ... Highway patrol officer asked about the papers, maps and GPS on dash ... I immediately went into the whole Geocaching story ... pulled up my photos on the camera ... he got interested and we talked more ... and long story short .. he told me to slow down and mentioned he might just have to check it out. Don't know if he did or not ... but it saved me a hundred or more dollars in fines and more in insurance penalities!!! OH, Yeah, I was speeding ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  13. They work pretty good ... and do collect dust but can be revived by washing with water ... mentions it in the instructions. I never remember to take mine ... so in hind sight it was a waste of money ... oh, wait it was a gift. OK ... a waste of someone else's money. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  15. You're not dealing with an electronic compass here on the III ... you should take a magnetic compass with you to follow your bearing to the cache. Be sure your settings are set to Magnetic ... or manually do a declination calculation to transfer information to your magnetic compass. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  16. Hint ... do an auto locate everyonce in awhile. Sometimes due to some other issues this will help update the alm. data. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  18. UPDATE: Well I did it. I took it apart ... and it is back together again. Not too hard to do really but has some tricky aspects. The great thing is it works wonderfully now. The problem is the connection to the ribbon is "VERY DELICATE" ... to the point that once the small pressure clamping mechanism is in place ... and you are reassembling it ... it can very easily be pulled loose ... just a bit .. not enough to fail but enough to start causing problems later. So it's easy to see how this could happen during a production assembly operation on a high percentage of units. VERY POOR DESIGN. It would have taken so little to correct it. Anyway I've taken photos and will do a write up if anyone's interested. Note ... my Vista was purchased when they first came out and is definitely out of warranty ... but I still have $125 to $150 in my pocket and the Vista is like new. No lines ... no blank screens ... no matter how much I tap or twist it. So far no failure and I've turned it on and off over 50 times ... OH YEAH ... I'm feeling pretty good about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  19. I found it marginal in Bolivia, Chile and Brazil ... darn near useless in China. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  21. Here's my 2 cents ... I've had the same problem on my Vista ... as soon as I get the "honey-do" lists down to around 2,000 projects I'm going to disassemble mine and see about that connector. Warranty is expired. I also have a 76S ... LOVE IT ... especially the screen size. The weight is nothing ... the size ... after my Vista is not that much of a hassle. The only problem I have is optimum way to use that antenna is holding the unit vertical ... to use the compass .. flat and level ... sort of an issue but not too bad. My vista has only had this one problem ... never had a problem with the band coming off ... never had a problem with the stick ... and I've carried it all over South America, China, Linville Gorge wilderness area ... all very harsh environments and it has not been babied. The Line issue or blank screen issue has been there for a year ... but has gotten worse lately. A diagonal twist of the unit usually clears it up ... but it will come back sometimes. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  22. I have a Camelbak Trail Blazer ... I don't freeze the bag ... but with the wide mouth opening ... I fill it with ice cubes and top off with water ... it does supply cold water for the right amount of time. The bag is not too large ... but large enough for gear, first aid kit and rain gear. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  24. After reading that first posted sign ... I've seen drainage ditches in China I'd rather swim in! Makes you wonder what happened that they "had" to post that sign! Some comedian once said that Preparation H has a warning on it not to take Orally ... because somebody did it! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  25. Here's a link that will get you to some detail on Trilateration & Triangulation If you'll do a Google search on it there are about 3,830 hits that can lead you to more information than you will ever want to know on the subject ... I started getting flash backs from college ... so you're on your own from here pal! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
