  7. There's one little thing I miss from the Vista ... is the ability to have the block of letters to scroll to to spell out names or coordinates. The 76S uses the old Garmin ... scroll thorough each number in succession. I would love to have Garmin incorporate this feature in the 76S. Sent an email once ... never heard back or saw the feature added in an update. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  8. Just jumped up to Shanghai .. in a moving taxi got a lock in 4 minutes and a 22 foot EPE. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  11. There are trade offs for size and wearing on your wrist .. and IMHO ... not worth it. More like one of those good ideas that just don't quite make it over the fence. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  12. Children in general pay a lot of attention to what you say ... and do ... sometimes much more than you want them too ... and usually find the most inappropriate time to bring it up! I learned very quickly not to comment on the ... ahem ... the driving skills or lack of same ... of my fellow drivers on the highway while my daughter was in the car! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  13. quote:Originally posted by squirrel-family: ... I wonder about the reason and if this is a typical problem of the Legend. ... It is a typical problem with Etrex units ... including the Vista. Definitely use the warrantly to repair ... but after the warranty. You can send it for them to fix (send you a refurbished unit) for around $150 US. Or if you're gutsy ... and cheap like me you can follow the instructions in this link It's a design defect that guarantees a high percentage of units coming down the line will fail as you described ... eventually. But it's strickly mechanical in nature. Anyway food for thought ... some where in the future. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  14. ...er ... two huh? I think I'm over qualified ... I have this gadget problem! I have my very first Garmin 45 now a paper weight ... a 12XL, 12Map, a the two (Vista and 76S) that I use exclusively for travel/geocaching and backpacking, now. Before you cast stones ... my wife owns many more shoes than I own GPSr's ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

  18. With my Vista ... which I'm carrying in China this trip ... aquistion time is less than 1 minute ... once on Hainan last week it took 3 minutes ... but mostly because of the tall buildings around me. So far no noticeable difference between here and home. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  19. I played with one of the Casio's when they came out ... two things ... MASSIVE BATTERY USEAGE ... and UNBELIEVEABLY LONG AQUISTION TIMES ... I owned one only long enough to send back under the return policy date. Loved the idea ... met my gadget dependency needs ... but fell short of my expectations. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  20. Trust me ... once you've tried a 12 channel parallel unit ...you're 40 is destined to become a very interesting paperweight! Hey, I've still got my original Garmin from 1997 ... in a drawer somewhere! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
  21. I agree with the performance change ... first upgrade I've seen where there was a noticeable improvement in performance ... I'm glad to see that it wasn't just me or my imagination! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!

I'll email you. Sorry ... I tried. 24. I just received an email last night from a cacher having problems with an etrex in Beijing. I'm actually in China right at the moment of this posting ... I can tell you I've used a Vista and a 76S with success over here. The only thing I can think is that if you turn it on cold when you arrive and don't get it oriented to the fact you've relocated half way around the world (from USA) ... it's got all the almanac data from your last position and is trying to locate itself based on this data. With a Vista of a 76S you can tell it you've moved and show on map before it starts looking for signals ... or you can wait the 5 to 15 minutes for it to aquire it's position on its own. Bottom line ... as the manuals say ... if you haven't used it in over 30 days and if you've located more than 500 miles ... it needs to re-aquire almanac data to work. Patience grasshopper! NOTE: DON'T WALK AROUND A CERTAIN SQUARE IN BEIJING JUST OUTSIDE THE FORBIDDEN CITY with your GPSr out ... you'll attract a lot of the wrong kind of attention!
  25. In his later life ... Daniel Boone was asked if in all his explorations had he ever been lost ... his answer is still one of my favorite quotes: quote: I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the "NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION" ... when you absolutely have to find it first!
