  1. Hello! AOLBuilder and I attempted to submit an Event Cache to coincide with the 2005 DC Walk for Diabetes. As it doesn't strictly comply with the guidelines listed on geocaching.com it can't be approved as an "official" cache event. However, we're still going to meet at 0900 on Freedom Plaza, walk the "official" walk, and attempt to locate and log the Virtual caches surrounding the Mall. Here's a link to my personal web page with details: "Cache Walk Details" If there's any interest in joining AOLBuilder and me, please contact one of us and we'll send meet-up and contact information. If you can't make it to the Mall on the 22nd but would still like to help , please consider sponsoring one of us. We've registered a team called "Caching Road Warriors" You're welcome (and encouraged) to join us. "WearyTraveler's Walk Page" "AOLBuilder's Walk Page" Cache On!

  3. Brendal, They're on sale for less than 300 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/GARMIN-ETREX-VISTA-C-C...1QQcmdZViewItem You may want to come down a bit...
  4. I recently lost my Garmin Vista (How does one lose a GPS... At least IT knows where it is). I've still got a GPS-V that I use for driving. When I use the GPS-V for caching (off-road goto), I find that the GPS-V takes a long time to refresh the navigation screen. I keep walking 20-30 feet past the waypoint before the navigation screen updates and tells me the cache is behind me. It's done this since I bought it and is very frustrating. For driving it's OK. For caching, it's getting ready to be thrown in a lake... Has anyone out there noticed this in their GPS-V? Is it the autoroute function that's keeping the V from updating? If so, is there a way to turn it off temporarily? I really loved my Vista. It updated promptly and always (well, usually) got me to the cache location. I'm thinking of replacing it with another Vista or upgrading to a Vista C. I read that the Vista C has autorouting as well. So I'm afraid to spend all that money on a GPS that's slower than my gait. So, I'm asking for information and advice. Why is my GPS-V so slow Vista or Vista C I need to make a decision and buy something before a 2 October geocaching event in Virginia. Cache on!!!!!

  6. Have you seen a breakdown of the memory usage in Garmin's map programs? I saw elsewhere that the 6 million POIs in City Select-NA v7 only amount to 10% of the memory but that also gave no source. Consideration of the data required per POI led me to a back-of-envelope estimate of about 20% but it depends on how much compression is used. Mr. Eagle, Keep in mind that maps, like the MetroGuide ones shown by NeoGeo, will add about $80 to the price, so the total for the Rino 120 would be about $270. OTOH, a GPS V with twice as much memory can be bought for about $200 which includes City Select maps plus the auto-routing feature. My inclination would be to go with the V and buy a separate radio for about $50 *unless* you have friends who will also have Rinos and you want to use the feature that lets you see the location of the other people on your screen. 8. OK - you know you're a geocacher if... You're sitting there debating whether you should make the drive to get that single cache , or save the gas and catch the cache on the way to someplace you need to go (I know - to a real geocacher, that's not even a option ). So you call a ladyfriend you just met and ask if she'd like to meet you for coffee (our second date ), at the Borders, right next to the cache in question. Then you rush so that you beat her there, allowing you time to grab the cache . Talk about pressure... Fortunately (for her ) I was able to find the cache quickly and still meet her on time. Then, after coffee, I handed her the GPS and had her find it as well. All in all, a very nice date! Cache on!
  9. Does anyone know of a European source for a GPS V? Would that come with the European City Select?
  10. I just ordered a GPS V which has City Select NA. I travel to Europe and am considering buying the City Select Europe. It's very expensive and I've seen it (much cheaper) as an "upgrade". If I buy the upgrade will I need a separate unlock (I don't know what these are) to use it with my City Select NA
  11. I keep a bunch of bags in my fanny pack. I fill one one the way out. Too often there is too much for a single bag. I also leave a CITO kit (35M can with a bag) in the caches. Hopefully the next cacher(s) will take the initiative and grab trash on the way out. Cache on!
  12. I've found most of the caches close to my home. Now the first page of my search is full of caches that are either uninteresting or absent (from reading the logs). Is there a way to "ignore" caches during a search? I don't want to page through a list of absent caches each time I search. I know I can probably weed them out with pocket queries but that's not helpful while I'm actively searching. If it's not a current capability how can I put in a feature request?
