1. I own five AL's and wish I knew when people posted a review. Has this not got the attention of Groundspeak or are they too busy creating ridiculous and stupid little labyrinth games only children enjoy?
2. Revisiting this thread ten years later, I am on my second pair of Timberland White Ledge Waterproof boots. I bought a third pair, as this current pair have a lot of miles on them. Excellent boots. How about you?
3. I do this exact same thing, but then I walk away about 50 feet and seek the waypoint. If there is a clear enough landpoint, I search the coords in Google Earth for confirmation. In 52 hides the only time I was off was when I transposed the numbers wrong.
4. Take a look at my cache here: GC2CKH8
<img src= "http://ourbaytown.com/baytownbert/Geocaching/images/Nutria.jpg" alt="Is that a nutria right there, Cletus cache/>
" />
I asked Dayton, Texas brothers Cletus and Buford Davenport to help me identify the local critters and populace while I was out and about placing geocaches. Buford does the talkin' and Cletus provides the "reasonin'". This is number two in the series. Thanks fellars! This is in the SHORT description. Everything else you see is in the LONG description. Hope this helps.
5. What is the default setting for caches? True, or magnetic if the cache page doesn't specify? Thanks in advance! BB
6. I bought my latest boots at REI and they are Merrell's. Good medium grade day hikers, costing about $120 something. Mind you, I'm no expert on what is best, but I can offer this: Find out through research what holds up. Make a list and then if you can, go to Cabellas, Bass Pro, REI, etc and with list in hand, try them on. If not, you take your chances ordering online. Just make sure you have plenty of time and they have a good return policy. If you can scrape together $100 for a pair of boots, then don't pass up the $140-180 pair you really want. Every step you take will remind you of your choice and believe me, a 15-20 mile hike in one day is hard on your feet even with good boots. If your hiking needs are rocky ground, get all leathers. If you mainly do Urban hiking/cacheing, then go with something more tennis-shoeish, but no low quarter shoes. You need GOOD ankle support. First and foremost, they should be water proof and have a good tread pattern on them. When I was in the Air Force, I wore my Combats everywhere and wouldn't have it any other way, but seriously, for geocaching, there are better shoes/boots. I would not consider buying a used boot off of ebay. Shoes and boots are very relative to the wearer. However, if the boot has an excellent history/warranty you can not go wrong (after actually wearing them). All this is just my opinion, YMMV. BB
7. I took the name BaytownBert back in the early days (bout 8 years ago) when I first started off-roading. It was a name folks could remember on the CB and the Jeep forums. I live in Baytown, Texas and it just fit. I'm still called that by a lot of folks and I have a real interest in my hometown's history. I own/run: http://ourbaytown.com My historical site. http://jeepmadness.com My Jeep site. http://baytownbert.blogger.com My Urban Trekking page. http://jeepmadness.com/ocsc/ My favorite (humor) page.
8. I agree with both crzycrzy and sept1c tank. I am new to geocaching, but it is another excuse to go out somewhere remote by myself. Same as hiking, cycling, jogging, off-roading. The fewer people I see while on these adventures, the better I feel. I'm not unsociable either. It's just that humans are one of the few potentially dangerous animals on the trail. Now I know why early adventurers moved when they found out that someone built a house 20 miles away. LOL Baytown Bert

10. Greetings one and all! I just received my Magellan Sportrack for X-mas and I've been researching geocaching to add more adventures to my Urban Treking Blog, located here: Baytown Bert's Urban Treking! I run a historic Texas web site on the city of Baytown, located on the Gulf Coast also and thought I might use geocaching as a tool to find and draw folks to our historic resources. Our Baytown! I'm also an old time Jeeper and run: Jeep Madness! My real passion is my para-military/political web site located here: Orbiting Command Ship Central! I'll post more as I develop some experience.
