  1. That rattler was nothing compared to what you are used to. Doesn't Australia have something like 8 of the 10 most deadly snakes? As for those ticks, won't really do any damage until they sink their heads in. If they are crawling on you, just grab 'em off you. If they grab hold, make sure the head comes out with the rest of the tick. Could lead to a bad infection at least. If they suck on you a while, you could end up with Lyne disease or Rocky mountain spotted fever. (at least I think that's what it was called.) As for the guns, I do think that Texas has the right idea. But as I live in Maryland, it will be a long time before I ever see laws like that. F_M
  2. Don't know about anyone else, but I've never put a description on any of my wheresgeorge bills. I think I would if it was a good story behind it. I can't see myself putting that I found it in a cache. Omitting information is not a lie. F_M
  3. Glad to get the last post. I looked in the Groundspeak store and didn't see them. I was hoping to be able to buy a couple bags to pick up some trash. I read an early post that said that the person always uses the CITO bags so the rangers know who is picking up the trash. Leaves a good impression of geocachers. How about the other part? What does the SL mean in TNLNSL? F_M
  4. I noticed my posts saying that also. Looks to me like it's to show when you have had warnings about breaking the rules. F_M
  5. I keep seeing this show up. I know it's Take Nothing Leave Nothing but what's the SL? Also these CITO bags that I see posted all over, where can I get the "official" CITO bags? Sorry if this has been covered before, but I wasn't able to find it. F_M
  6. Thanks for all the responses. Obviously I hit a sensitive spot for some and I entirely understand the view. After all, if I'm participating in the sport and I'm following the unofficial rules and customs, I expect the other participants to play by the same rules and customs. If nothing else, it's not fair to the folks that are putting something of value in there. I also appreciate the lists of what people put into the caches. I never even thought of getting a "lot" of stuff on e-bay to use as signature items. I also like the idea of putting something of value that you made in there. Only problem with that is my other big time hobby is wine making. Not something that I can leave in a cache. I'm glad to see that so many people have the same views on what is acceptable. A shame everyone that participates doesn't do the same. Thanks again F_M
  7. I've been looking around the posts for a couple hours since they came back online. I've got a couple questions on the trinket exchange. Trading trinkets, what would be an equal value trade? For instance, I've seen notes of people leaving a golf ball, a smashed penny, and a photo of themselves. What's a newbie to do? If I decide on a "signature item" what monetary value should this be? I want to participate in all aspects of the game, and trading trinkets is part of the game. I don't want to get myself labeled as one of these guys that leave junk. In the group of items above, to me a smashed penny is worthless, but I've read posts where people have gone out of their way for this. Now I know my perspective on this will change with time, but what would be a fair trade for this? Also, what do some of you guys use as your signature item? F_M
  8. Thanks for pointing me to the right part of the site. I'll have to take a look. I've got a couple ammo boxes laying around the house. Used to do a lot of canoeing and the are great for your electronics and wallet. F_M
  9. From 1 newbie to another. I chose the Magellan Sportrak Map as my first GPS. It was pretty much a toss up between that and the Garmin Etrek Legend. The final factors were that in talking to some folks, apparently the Sportrak allows you to display the name and not just the GC#. Also, I read the review found at http://www.gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/...ak-pro-rev.html The Magellan rebate is icing on the cake. Ended up getting this for $170 including shipping. Take off the $30 rebate and it's down to $140. Should have it wednesday. F_M
  10. Folk, I'm as new as they come. I haven't even gotten my GPS yet. Should be here on Wednesday, just in time to find my first cache Thanksgiving day, hopefully. I know that many of these are hidden in ammo boxes and someone mentioned that you can get then cheap at cheaperthandirt.com I went there and the only ammo boxes I found were plastic cases that say they are water-proof. Are these the cases you guys use? When I think ammo box, I think Army surplus. Those heavy metal cases with the clamp that an 8 year old can't open. Thanks F_M
