  1. Pretty hard to give an accurate recommendation without knowing your usage pattern. What do you need the GPSr for? What features are important to you? What was your previous GPSr and why do you need to upgrade? etc These GPSr's are diverse as each other, so some further direction would be helpful. mm
  2. The only way i know is to set the viewing level that "User Waypoints" (which includes your Geocaches) display. Go to Setup==>Map==>Advanced Map Setup==>Zoom Levels==>User Waypoints. Setting this at 200m for example will ensure that these waypoints are shown up to and including the 200m map level then they will disappear at levels above that. This is useful as at higher levels eg 1.2km and above, the map doesn't become a blur with Caches (a depressing feeling ) yet at zoomed levels they blend in nicely with the map surrounds. If you want to get rid of them to some extent, set this level to 5m. mm
  3. I use the r60n case from Gilsson as made for the 60 series: It goes on the Oregon with a tight fit, though with the recessed design of the Oregon's screen, touching it is slightly more difficult. Sorry i don't have a photo of it on the Oregon. mm
  4. huh? Might pay to check out the definition of "beta software" for the answer as to why they do it. mm
  5. The distance adjusted is the difference calculated from the previous averaged coordinates or the in case of a new averaging session, from the initial capture (1 minute ago). Over several sessions this accuracy should decrease due to averaging. mm
  6. It seems to me that there is a misunderstanding on what is available and what is discontinued. By the looks of it, the G2 (PC version) is not available, however the 76CSx is indeed supported via a Garmin microSD card. Whether that is a wise move by Garmin, i'm not sure. It would be so much easier to manage with just a card IMO. Rather than dropping support for the 76CSx, it seems to be changing the focus of Mapsource. Basecamp might be the future of their software strategy. mm
  7. I'm not sure where you are looking, however it clearly shows that the Bluechart G2 microSD™/SD™ card-compatible products includes the 76CSx. Did you click on the "View microSD™/SD™ card-compatible products" tab? mm
  8. Wait?? The Bluecharts G2 are compatible with the 76Csx, so i don't see the problem. These G2 charts will still work on your GPSr, however some features eg 3D map view, will not be utilised. Bluechart G2 I hope that helps. mm
  9. Anyone having problems accessing tide data with their 400c? Mine has the hourglass spinning and locks up the return button and ABC button, together with a full lock of the power button everytime......need to pull batteries to reset. Good satellite coverage, tide station nearby, using Australian tidal data though. mm
  10. That is a Geocaching.com problem rather than a Garmin issue IMO. Live outside the US and you will deal with the issue in regards to their timings constantly. UTC time makes sense to use, though we just need to see GS code into their server the ability to recognise timezones correctly and deal with it. What's a Colorado? It will be interesting to see if the Colorado gets the same makeover..... mm
  11. What an update....virtually all the goodies to make this GPSr a great unit. mm
  12. Living in The Whitsundays, and with previous cachers placing "holiday caches" on the surrounding islands (Hamilton Island etc) i would advise against placing it in a location that you can't maintain. You would find that the reveiwers may not approve this cache due to the "holiday" rulings, and even though it seems like a good place to establish your first cache, placing one closer to home and learning from it might sometimes be a better option. Lindeman Island is mainly National Park with some challenging walks, including to some great lookouts. National Parks in Qld are tolerant at this stage of caching though we need to be mindful of our activities. I figure that just because we have 74 Islands in the Whitsundays, doesn't mean we need to flood them with caches. Some of the staff are great, and even cache themselves, whilst others are carefully watching us for any opportunity to ban the activity. Let's play it safe. I would not hide a cache in the resort proper as it is asking for trouble IMO as they are regularily maintained (gardens, structures etc). Even near the trapeze would be a problem. I hope that helps. mm
  13. Hi LSL, You mention that your GPSr is out by 30-40m yet you have mentioned fixing the problem with a software upgrade back in March. Is the problem still happening, and/or has it reappeared all of a sudden? A couple quick questions to narrow down any problem: How is the cache data uploaded to your GPS? How is the cache data obtained? Is the problem with EVERY cache? BTW, don't worry about using WAAS in Australia as it normally won't be of any noticable benefit. The mapping software on the GPSr won't have any affect on the position, and whether one or multiple mapsets are displayed at once won't make a difference. They have a display order, with the basemap as the lowest priority. Higher quality and/or specialised mapsets will have priority and will be displayed where possible. mm
  14. With only 350 permanent residents on the island, i don't like the chances of a cacher living there. With Lord Howe Island being World heritage listed, and being part of NSW, i would think that the reviewers would not allow any cachers to be listed in many parts of the Island. mm
  15. You will miss any images in the description (which may be important for mystery/puzzles etc), and possibly the ability to view all of the logs (i normally only have the last 5 anyway). For an afternoon grab-and-go concept, it is brilliant. mm
  16. One of the best ways to evaluate a GPSr is to attend an Event which normally have a huge variety of GPSr's in attendance. Hopefully the Event may even have some Oregons with screen protectors attached to see that option at the same time. Hope that helps. mm
  17. You mean like the "View in Google Earth" link on the particular trackable's page? mm
  18. Buy a 2Gb MicroSD card (not microSDHC) and save yourself from being ripped off with that rediculous price. mm
  19. No need for conversion tools. On Google Earth: Go to Tools==>Optons...==>3D View, then change the Show Lat/Long option to "Degrees, Decimal Minutes". mm
  20. Just how old are we talking here? 20-30 years? I would be shocked if it didn't have WGS84 as a datum, as it is the default datum. If the GPSr has NMEA out (or allows for data in/out) then there is a darn good chance that you have missed the setting somewhere. If you list the Brand/Model, i'm sure someone can help with finding the information you need. mm
  21. There was another thread started today mentioning the same thing, it might be worth consolidating information in that one http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=215040 Whilst it would be yet another handy feature, I'm personally happy for this feature to stay a lower priority at this stage. Sort out any other issues/bugs first before playing with the storage settings, which may not be an easy fix as one might believe. mm
  22. Check out this page for a description of past coins produced ===> http://www.geocachealaska.org/coinsales/pastcoins.htm mm
  23. Thanks for that....though i wouldn't be making these bold statements without some definitive proof eg. current measurement etc. Anyone able to confirm the savings? I just don't believe that there would be any noticable saving in power due to these settings (large fields instead of small). The idea of backlight usage is very subjective as it also depends on external variables to guarantee a saving. For those people that i know that use their Oregon without the backlighting on anyway, this would become a moot point. mm
