  1. Garmin Oregon and Colorado both have a big screen and street view capabilities which would be good for street nav and also are fully featured Geocaching GPS units.
  2. I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking here. I will assume that you are asking how it compares to the world wide base map? The topo map detail for the roads is as detailed as a road map where I live. This is leaps and bounds more detailed than the base map. The base map only has major roads where as the topo maps has all the roads. The topo details are also very good.
  3. Magellan eXplorist 500 with 1GB SD card and MapSendTopo 3D USA maps Purchased from REI in St. Louis approximately 1.5 years ago. It’s in like new condition. It has worked very well for me but others I play around with outdoors have Garmin units and I can’t use the IMG map files they create so I’m selling this and getting a Garmin. This unit comes with: USB cable AAA Battery clip Li-ion battery pack 1GB SD card MapSend Topo 3D USA map software (3CD set) Nylon carrying case with belt clip Screen protector (I have been using one designed for a Palm and find it to be just fine) Original install cd’s and most (if not all) original manuals and other papers I will also include the Vista driver and MapSend program needed for Vista compatibility Looking for $160.00 which would include traceable shipping from USPS or UPS/FedEx. I have a paypal account for payment and would require payment before shipping. PM me if you are interested. Thanks
  4. Like EScout above I have enjoyed using the eXplorist (mine is a 500). I bought it from REI about 1.5 years ago while on a trip to the USA. I have found it to be very accurate and reliable. Once I moved state side last year I also purchased the Topo 3D USA program and do not have any complaints. It has many features that MapSource does not seem to have. All that said Magellan customer service is appalling. Unfortunately everyone else I do stuff with outdoors has a Garmin. So all the custom maps they make do nothing for me (.img files) which is frustrating. Now with Magellan “support” gone I guess it’s time to go the Garmin route with an HCx.
  5. Absolutely you can “get roads and streets” on the eXplorist 500. I have MapSend Topo 3D USA and it actually has a very detailed set of roads, even for very small towns.
  6. This has been covered here in a number of threads now and again. Did you do a search for this topic? Make sure you have the latest firmware update (but read here about the pros/cons of that: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=186593 ) All else fails, call Garmin.
  7. Regarding the EU firmware http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=158222
  8. The firmware is written to small chip on the unit similar but not identical to SD card flash memory. No power is required to insure storage of the firmware. What do you mean by dumped exactly? I’m thinking it’s more likely that it is getting corrupted.
