  1. Go for the HCX. I bought one a few months ago and have never had this drift problem. My guess is out of the millions they have made only a few percent (if that) actually have a problem. Try it out. If you see issues take it back and get something else.
  2. I’m afraid I don’t quite understanding what your problem is. All I can say is that I followed the procedure here: http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm and found it to work without error.
  3. I have used the 20. It's freaking great......nearly. CPU is r e a l l y s l o w. Like really slow. Makes screen redraws a pain as well as searching and computing things. Wait for the 40 and you will love.
  4. Nope.....not in so much as describing the Ibycus hybrid method. In a nut shell you make a transparent map with elevation data, upload it to the GPSr and turn the layer on. This makes a great topo map. The map how to (just use the topo part of the instructions) can be found: Here - http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm Or Here - http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-...rmin-topo-maps/
  5. Topo data can be added to Ibycus maps with free data avaliable from the USGS seamless server.
  6. Garmin has no offices in Canada. Call the USA opperation.
  7. Tade for the Triton and sell that....you will get more $$$
  8. Install 2.6 again: http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/etrex/...istaHCx_260.exe
  9. Which Magellan topo product? Most of them require that the CD/DVD be in the drive when the program is running. If you’re looking for a way to back up the CD/DVD just burn a copy. You can use those on your trip and not worry about scratching them up.
  10. Don’t purchase either of these ill-conceived units. $500 for a device that is harder to see, less accurate than the older devices it’s replacing and has more bugs then the initial release of Windows Vista. WTF is that? Wait a month, go buy a PN-40.
  11. As far as maps go have you looked at the Ibycus or other free maps? USA - http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/IbycusUSA14.exe Canada - http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/ Other: http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/mp_main.html http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/29/ http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Main_Page
  12. I’m going to take a leap here and say you want an “affordable” GPRs for geocashing. My recommendation would be a Garmin Venture HC https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=8707 cheap small light great battery life display maps (free HQ maps are available for USA/Canada) high sensitivity antenna can babysit your kids
  13. Sorry dude…I wasn’t intending that to come across as slamming you. Zip lock bags are one way of doing things but I’m thinking that water damage will not be covered by Garmin. While pounding nails with my GPSr might not be a reality it can withstand being stepped on, dropped from the waist or dumped in the lake a few times over its life span without issue. Something that can’t be said about my nuivi. Being as the OP requested a “handheld” unit and used to own a eTrex I was thinking that handheld virtues like those above were important to him.
  14. Wrong sub forum. Try the GPS and Technology forum.
  15. As great as the N2x5 screen is, it is not a "handheld" unit. Portable yes, handheld no (not waterproof, dirt proof, rugged, etc.). Handheld + large screen = OR, CO and to a lesser amount the GSMAP 60/76. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...pareProduct=351
  16. No doubt the kind of winter gloves DanOCan will be using in Alberta will be much thicker then those used during a mild/short Tennessee winter. Even so....the glove usability comments on the OR Wiki look like things work very well even with gloves that work around -20c. As bad as Alberta winters are, let's face it, only 20 of them actually have days with highs below that. I think you should be good to go with the OR.
  17. Screen redraws will be a bit slower compared to the basemap due to the extra detail.
  18. Can’t really help you here as I never really got this far being as I used the Ibycus maps for the base layer. My understanding is that the water data will need to be imported separately into each mp file and may need to be trimmed.
  19. You don't need the SD card to look at the maps on your computer.
