This has picture was taken on Sept. 8/2001. When we first saw it we had thought that "This is what Geocaching is all about"..What do you think?

I think that letterboxing is easier to "promote" than Geocaching. Carve a nice stamp, hide it and let people come. If you place a Geocache any items that were orignally placed will be quickly grabbed and you are left with the task of "replenishing". A cacher a few months down the road finding a "State Sponsered" cache could be very well dissapointed finding "Cache Trash" so to speak. Just my 2¢....

Well, we have used our Sportbrain for awhile now. Price might be a little steep if you're looking for something cheap but we love it! Pretty accurate too.

This sounds like a virtual cache (and an extra nifty one at that) that should be approved. We've seen many virtual caches that say seek out the marker, plaque, etc. and answer such and such a question which can be found on the given marker, plaque, etc. To place an object, that blends in... and to have a question on it...sounds great! If this cache were near us, we would give it a shot. If virtuals don't need a logbook, why should this? Maybe require a picture near the object in question as a sort of physical "log"? This peoples feedback say "approved!"

I'm not sure if this is a feature available but I was wondering if it would be possible to send a general email to all finders/posters (online) of a cache of your making. This would help when you pick up a camera from that cache and would like to let everyone know who had visited that pictures have been posted. Easier than sending individual emails.

"Try to pick a place where people will not find him while searching for the cache."...that sounds like it could be hidden some distance from the cache (up to 500 ft.?). If certain kinds of clues were given, perhaps using compass headings, bearings, paces and what not, without any gps co-ordinates, the casual cacher who screws up the regular travel bug process would not bother with clues that require a little more thinking? Finding a "clue" for this bug would be an interesting challenge. Hopefully, Blue will be around for awhile!!

Just read this thread and realized we had forgotten about Members Only Caches!! Perhaps our next one might be Members Only just to see who shows up?....Hmmmm...we'll see!.......

Park at these co-ordinates for a nice 3 mile hike past a waterfall, a good view from the bluffs, an old cemetary as well as an old foundation from who knows when and then finally on to the cache. OR.....park somewhere else for a quick 3 minute walk to cache in/cache out and on to the next one and miss out on what makes geocaching.... Geocaching.

Here is a link to pictures taken from a camera in a cache we hid on 9/7/2001, left thru-out the winter months in Rhode Island and picked up in May of 2002 and developed. They seem ok to us. Cameras are cool. We are still waiting to see a picture of us from one of several cameras in caches we have found! It is quite exciting to re-visit a cache you have placed, pick up the camera, get it developed and see some user names matched with faces. Writing this I recall Benchmark and his golden dollars and finally matching a face with the name.

Do you enjoy caches that include in the description "Please be discreet as this is a very busy area...please take care in rehiding as people may see you...etc."? We personally got into geocaching because of the new, not so well known places caches would lead us to. We like a nice little hike. We don't have fun playing 007 or what not trying to pick up a cache without being seen, opening it up, then replacing it again without being seen. Maybe some enjoy this. Just wondering how many do enjoy this type of cache or just "skip it" like we do?....

What I "first" remember of our first day Geocaching is falling into some murky water after the 2 x 4's slipped out from under me! As far as what we first took, I had to look back and find that actually the cache before the splash was our 1st one. We took a Cranberries cassette and some nail polish from our very first cache. We left a ceramic globe thing, a feather, action figure(?)! and what was actually a Magic Hat beer bottle cap which have all kinds of different sayings on it and this one mentioned something about fungus among us and there were a lot of mushrooms that day!!
PS--there was a camera in that splash cache and a picture of me was taken with it soaked to the neck in cruddy water! Too bad the camera was lost!

The last month or so, we have seen some weird little bugs? or something on branches. They look like little cotton puffs? Little bugs waving their fluffy behinds? We come to a branch with them, shake it, and they start wiggling, shaking, etc.? Here is a link to one of our caches where someone has posted some pictures of these things...as well as a note because I can't figure out how to post a picture to the forums......

As we walk the trail and we see a blue/black leaf patch on the ground, beware of these little, white, floating things...!! What are they?

We voted for "do what you want!". However, we have a personal travel bug, Jabba (TB14F), who would feel very disappointed if he were logged into caches that he did not actually visit. So we only log him into caches he has seen. But to each his own! There are personal Travel Bugs and then there "really personal" Travel Bugs which Jabba is considered to us. Do what you want and enjoy!!

Just a quick post to say the Travel Bug in question at the beginning of this thread has been retreived and is ok! We had unsuccessfully tried to retrieve him and after getting back realized he was at the "top of the tree" which we didn't climb, not in it. Someone after us picked him up so all is well in this Bugs case.....

there you go! Clear packing tape over the screen. zoinks. but will that leave a residue once the tape is all scratched and you want to replace the tape, peeling it off the screen? Wanted to get that

This is a course in place for the summer. Try out at your leisure. We recently started letterboxing which has introduced us to the compass and bearings and whatnot. As far as Geocaching goes, only have used a map to find parking. Have not yet needed anything more than the co-ords for the cache. Maps usually just used to get there... orienteering/geocaching? sounds like fun!

This is one of the reasons why we have been Letterboxing more. Every Letterbox you find is unique. The stamp is unique. Even if you find it "on the side of the highway" (have not found any there by the way) that stamp you find will be unique. You go into it expecting a stamp, unique to that box. No need to hope for persons that traded up/equal, etc. I'm not here to bash Geocaching as that is how we discovered Letterboxing but with Letterboxing you find the stamp or not.
