  1. Problem is once you reach a certain load no matter how many resources you throw at it it will not scale any larger due to limitations of the underlying database technology, I read they are working on changing the underlying architecture of the site to allow future growth.
  2. I looked at GeoCache Navigator and it is cool and all, but $6 a month is kinda steep. I'd plop $20 or maybe $25 on it in a heart beat, but that comes out to $72 a year.
  3. 772, about half of that 20 mile circle is ocean or swamps though so not a good comparison to someone who is land locked.
  4. That's an impressive list, I had no idea.... Still, wouldn't the items have fixed prices instead of being auctioned? Oh well, if there is no issue here, I'll shop around for deals... I don't think Groundspeak puts any stipulations on what you can charge for an item, you pay their wholesaler cost, what you do in makeup is your choice. Only large companies like Apple do fixed pricing. As a side note this works great for those items they sell at mall kiosks, had a girlfriend who wants some ceramic hair straightener that was $189 at the mall. Went on Ebay and got the same thing (brand, size, color, etc.) for $100 less.
  5. LPC = Lamp Post Cache, the ones under the lift-able skirt that covers the bolts that hold down the metal pole part. Cool the first dozen times you find them, but tend to get old quickly.
  6. Yes I would actually, that is clear, precise, and to the point.
  7. Yes and Yes, a NM log sets it, an OM log clears it. You can clear it in the attributes screen too but some cachers may think you just wanted the symbol to go away, not that you actually fixed it. I think this is one of the best changes GC.com has made to the site! I always figured a cache with a NM for a long time had a lazy CO, and after a while I would just ignore them. Now I see half had no clue it was set NM at all, and the other half had no idea how to clear it. Hopefully all these caches will be fixed up now and the hobby will be better for it.
  8. I've always had to ask, is it really a hint if it does not make any sense till after you find the cache? That just sounds like a good joke you are robbing those who don't use the hint from seeing. I include that stuff in my cache description.
  9. I agree with the others, hints are encrypted so you don't read them unless you fully intend to. My general rule is I don't read the hint unless I am ready to walk away, but I like a challenge. Some days I'd kill for that hint, here is what we tend to get locally: "It's there" = irony dictates that whenever I see this hint it will turn up it is actually missing. "It's a little goat, fake bird, toy truck, etc. etc. etc." = thanks, I had seen that fake bird in the tree 6 times already but never thought it may be the cache.... does this really happen to anyone who has found more then half a dozen caches? I can see if it is a fake rock maybe... "No hint needed, everything you need is out there" = really? So why did I just spend 30 minutes looking and finally decide I needed the hint? (This one I once got on a 5 terrain cache that I had to climb, low crawl, go through mud for over an hour to get to.... old GPS had no descriptions and no way I was bringing cell phone on that expedition so I got the added bonus of having to decode this one by hand on the cache page I had printed.
  10. I am going to buy this device (just getting into geocaching and learning now, haven't began yet)and wonder if you have any additional software then? The other post confused me because from what I understand it works like you said out of the box so to say...in that all you have to do is select the cache you want to find, click on send to gps and that was it in order to get the full list loaded on the magellan gc gps in the way pretty much just like the computer has them listed. Now I'm lost why all the extra steps talked about? I plan on being a prem member too so I shouldn't have to do all the added steps from what I thought..yikes now I'm lost again. You can do them one of a time that way if you want, but it gets old quick. The methods we are talking about would let you load 100, 1000, or even 10,000 caches in a matter of minutes. (10,000 is the limit for the GC). Sure your thinking that is crazy now, but wait till you get doing 20, 30, or even 40 caches in a day which an experienced cacher can do in a weekend easily... some people get close to 100 in a day. Or wait till you take a road trip and want to cache along the way, but are not sure exactly where you want to do it. I do a lot of traveling for work so I have 10 whole counties and parts of others loaded up in my GPS all the time, about 7000 caches total, and I update them all every week. I have no idea where I will be when I have time to grab one so I couldn't just download the ones I plan to get if I wanted to, the one at a time method would simply be impossible.
  11. Where do you find Thanks Favorites are a Premium Member feature, you would not see this as you can't earn favorite points.
  12. I know it is off topic but since you are a new cacher I wanted to point out this is NOT a good idea to put out as a cache, last thing we need are MORE bomb scares caused by caches found by the public. Never put out a cache that can be easily mistaken for a bomb, and always mark them as geocache on the container. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.....
  13. I would start with the Magellan Vantage Point software, much easier to use till you can learn GSAK. GC Manual Download Vantage Point Quick Start Quide Vantage Point Manual Download Vantage Point Software Download This should get you going, if you have a more specific question just ask.
  14. Boilerplate is slang for standardized form. But I have to say the reviewer could have choosen better terminology, boilerplate is an older slang word. I doubt half the kids in my west coast college class 10+ years ago would have known what it means. Actually besides for legal circles I can't say I've heard it used in a long time.
  15. COOL! I just had a great and unique idea to sign logs that people would always know is me so I'm glad to know it is ok, I don't always have a pen but as a smoker I always carry a lighter, now I will just BURN the logs as my signature! OK, I know that's over the top, but there IS a limit to how much leeway you have to give someone. Next people will just start wrapping their stickers around a nano container. Who cares if I ruin it for other people, long as I got MY smiley.
  16. I would have politely replied "Yes I checked the container and surrounding area for signatures, graffiti, and cave drawings and your signature, not any mark made by a man was nowhere to be found, you sure it was the actual cache you found? Maybe it was just a piece of trash, or maybe you just got there after me.... did you see my name on the log sheet when you looked at it?" Bonus points the more innocent yet sarcastic you sound while saying it. P.S. If I was the CO I'd delete the finders log for "no matching name found in log book", then chew him out for damaging my container!
  17. I am a big fan of archiving a cache and listing a new one for anything but a minor change, I know the COs like to have a cache with a long history. But if it has changed that much that it is a new experience then let me get a new smiley. I know of one around here that has moved 4 or 5 times, changed container type a few times too. Once because the whole area was torn down and rebuilt! Many of the locals have went and found it each time because the CO makes good/fun hides, but because of the stigma of logging a found on a cache more then once they have been robbed of smileys all those other times. They just post nice notes saying thanks again. If your puzzle changes to a multi give everyone a chance for another smiley. Maybe someone can tell me why the COs want to keep it as the same cache... do you not want people looking for it again?
  18. To me it is more about if an area is saturated with 1 type of cache, LPCs are a common example, about a month ago I had found 6 micro LPCs in one day, all in the same area, all by the same CO. Finally just drove 10 minutes in another direction to get away from them. But the weekend before last I found 80 caches in 2 days at Cacheapalooza 5, 90% of there were the ammo cans we all profess to love till the end of time, but truthfully I don't want to see another ammo can for at least a month. When the rare micro came up that weekend I was jumping for joy because face it, there are only so many ways to hide an ammo can. There was no challenge to find them, walk 528 feet, look down, wash, rinse, repeat.......
  19. I'm not a Garmin guy but since I doubt many will visit this thread because of the title I've seen a lot of them suggest the following site for free maps, I think these will work with your 400T. GPSFileDepot
  20. I'd really suggest looking at CacheSense, it's not free but it is very reasonably priced at $10 and has a 30 day free trial so you can try it first. I've been using it for about well over a year now on 3 different Blackberrys (Tour, Bold, and now a Torch) and I love it, you will really need a premium membership to take advantage of it, but thats gonna be the case with any software free or paid.
  21. Thanks! If you look at the time stamps you would see we responded at roughly the same time, his response did not exist at the time I hit reply and started typing. But let me get this straight, OP asks question, someone replies there is a GSAK script which will solve your problem, but the name of the script is off topic? All I can say is WOW! I'm the last to stir up something on a web forum, but the rudeness level is crazy at times. All I did was ask the name of the script referred to in the previous post. Forums are gonna have people asking questions, if thats too much to ask maybe you would be happier in another forum where only cachers who know everything spending all day patting themselves on the back for knowing everything.
  22. I would have to guess a about 200,000 active in a state the size of California, though only Groundspeak knows for sure. I searched all over looking for a any statistics online but couldn't find anything so lets use some safe numbers as an example. Geocaching.com has 4 million members worldwide, though many are no longer active. - As a safe number lets say half are active so we got 2 million active members worldwide. The highest majority are in the US, but there are a lot of other countries so lets half it again and say 1 Million in the USA (I am sure it is more then this but lets play it super safe) California is 12% of the US population so lets say the number of geocachers per state is spread evenly (again I suspect a state like Cali known for its technology would have more, but we are playing it safe remember) 12% of 1Million = 120,000 active geocachers.
  23. I have look looked, by my estimation there are roughly 700+ listed macros currently in the forums, the have a brief description but after reading 150 or so I gave up trying to figure out what one this is.Is asking for the name too much?
  24. Mind listing the name of this macro or where to get it? I see tons of forum discussions on cool Macros for GSAK, many I would love to use, but none of them ever seem to list the macro name (for google search) or where to get it from.
