  1. Yeah, that's nice. But you still can't program the darn things. Therefore, they still won't be selling many Chirps to Colorado owners.
  2. The form has been around for years, the maps are at least a few months old. The SJRWMD are pretty geo-friendly.
  3. How about a walker with a GPSr attached in a handlebar bracket!
  4. For winter caching around here we ease off a little on the DEET and switch from SPF-30 down to SPF-15.
  5. Come on over to the coast and play with one of our banana spiders.
  6. I'd give this one a 0.5 at best: long winded, self absorbed, didn't call out and/or trash the local reviewers, and never cut off communications. Heck, it didn't even last 48 hours. The best ones are where the geocidee couldn't come back even if they wanted due to being bannated for the methods used in the geocide. I miss the good old days....
  7. Wickham Park in Melbourne will meet that requirement. It's about 12-15 miles south of Cocoa Beach and has at least 25 caches of various types and difficulties, including the oldest cache in the area. Most other large parks and recreation areas in central Brevard County have at least a few. Some good choices: Pine Island Conservation Area, Manatee Cove Park and Kings Park on north Merritt Island. Do a cache search on Zip Code 32931 and you'll be able to find a lot more. The county is nearly 75 miles long and contains over 1,000 caches. Good luck.
  8. I visited the local Scout Shop today and asked about the pamphlet. I was told that they don't expect them until "sometime in the fall". Everytime I ask, it's a different answer. Hmmm. Still no clue what the MB looks like. It's frustrating to have the requirements out but no pamphlet for guidance and no MB to give to the kids who complete the requirements.
  9. Nope. fronds on the ground are just covering camoflage like any other sticks, twigs, etc. "Florida Style" refers to hiding containers at the point where the stem of the frond is attached to the trunk of a Palm Tree... Nope. That won't work for a big ammo can. Crow is right. Nope you are both wrong. You can't hide an ammo box "Florida Style", you're right there. I guess until the Oxford English Dictionary comes out with a definitive definition there may be debate, but a clue that states "hidden Florida Style" still means hidden in a Palm tree, NOT under dead vegetation on the ground... Comment removed in the interest of harmony, if not good taste.

  11. Has anyone actually seen a Geocaching merit badge pamphlet? Or the badge itself? Please post an image if you have.
  12. Looks like the Colorado 400s made the discontinued list: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=167 Strangely, the 300 is still "alive".
  13. When you're out in the Florida scrub in the warmer months, be sure to take water with you. The sun and heat can be brutal; even to those of us who are natives. Also, take insect repellant, water, sunscreen, water, a good first aid kit, water, and a good walking/poking stick. Never put your fingers into a hole without probing it first with a stick. There are a lot of things in the bushes here that have fangs, stingers, and poisonous spines. And that's just the plants. The first one down a wooded path usually learns the meaning of the phrase "eating spiders". And, just in case I didn't mention it: take along some water.
  14. Wickham Park in Melbourne is just under one square mile and has enough caches to keep you busy for a couple of days.
  15. Doubtful. Style is not acquired with age; .... I wasn't thinking "style". I was referring to when their eyes will get old enough to want larger fonts and more subtle coloring!
  16. Speaking as an old and somewhat crusty curmudgeon, the visual apects of the update are much harder on the eyes of us old pharts. I especially miss the light gray tint on the caches I've already found. BTW, they aren't "little dictators", just young web developers. Wait 'til they reach their mid 40s.... then the visuals will get better.
  17. The earwigo.net links will not connect on IE or Firefox. Sounds like it may be dead after all.
  18. Depending on the itenerary of the cruise, you might make a real long distance Wherigo.
  19. You might try searching on virtuals for the areas you're interested in. Many of those are at historical sites that won't support a traditional cache.
  20. I was surprised at that too. Unfortunately it doesnt look like the information will be available soon enough to offer it at summer camp. Maybe we'll be able to incorporate some of it into another session or as a free time activity <shrug> Depends on how early in the 2nd quarter it becomes available. With the big push on the "Get in the Game" effort, I suspect it might be sooner rather than later.
  21. I, personally, prefer a long, hot shower with plenty of soap! The wine, I save for later.
  22. I just got the January/February issue of Scouting magazine today. The "What's New" feature on page 12 lists the new merit badges debuting in 2010. The Geocaching (not GPS/GIS) will appear in the second quarter of 2010. We should see the pamphlet in 4-5 months. Other new ones for 2010: SCUBA (out this month), Inventing (first quarter), Scouting Heritage (also second quarter) and Robotics (due by the end of 2010). This should add a lot more scouts to the "Get in the Game" effort.
  23. What is this "snow" you guys keep referring to?
