  1. I'd go with the Dakota... partly because I've owned one for the last year and a half. If you don't mind a smaller touchscreen, this is a pretty good little unit capable of doing things the more expensive ones can do too.
  2. I check in here every once and a while... Darn school always gets in the way though.
  3. Only one I could find that is sort of similar to what you're trying to find is this one:http://www.geoswag.com/new-releases/1st-cacher-geocoin.html Don't know any first find geocoins though.
  4. There is currently a Tourist Friendly attribute. It looks like this: , though I haven't seen it used much.
  5. Thank you for the personal attacks.... To continue to recommend to others that MapSource be used with newer version Garmin GPSr is to be irresponsible at best. Then to suggest someone who points out some potential issues does not qualify as a thinking person is purely counter productive and has no value for others reading this thread, not to mention what it says about your character. Windows explorer is another option for many of us, but not every user wants to manually manage data in this way. This thread was about BaseCamp and MapSource, and not Windows Exploere, which would not apply for Mac users anyway... I believe sufficient information has been presented so that users reading this thread will be able to decide for themselves what is best for them. I don't believe any of us were specifically recommending mapsource over basecamp, we were just saying that it is posible to use it.
  6. I've used mapsource to load maps on my Dakota 20 and haven't had any problems with it. You can still use mapsource, it just won't do a lot of stuff that basecamp does.
  7. That GPS should be fine with both programs. According to the Basecamp page, as long as you have version 3.2.2 or higher, you should be fine. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435
  8. Maybe because it's not listed as a locationless cache.(?) I doubt they'd archive a popular one like that. Just let it be.
  9. Just an update... Someone found the cache today just fine, only had a bit of trouble with where the hint referred to (they really shouldn't as there's only 1 place that matches the hint and is not off the trail) Also, out of curiosity, did anyone send them an email?
  10. Absolutely right tozainamboku, it could have been bad if they brought their own "replacement". Also, to be clear, I'm not at all mad that they posted the NM, I just sort of found it odd.
  11. Somebody posted a needs maintenance log on one of my caches earlier this week stating that "It's not there. It hasn't been found in two months". Sure the cache hadn't been found in awhile, but it also hadn't had any DNF's since then, nor any other logs. So I went out and checked it today, and sure enough, there was the cache, hidden in the same old spot. I find it kind of unnecessary to use a "Needs Maintenace" just because you couldn't find it and the last log on the cache was a couple months back. I've had DNF's on many caches that hadn't been found in awhile and each time I log a DNF, not a NM.
  12. From the west coast, Happy New Year everyone!
  13. This will help: http://www.geocaching.com/track/howto.aspx Once on the trackable's page, click the "Add log entry" link on the right, select the appropriate type of log (retrieve, discover etc,), and finally write your message. You can upload your image after you've submitted your log by clicking the small gray/green icon beside the red trashcan. I hope this helps!
  14. Like msrubble said, the only major difference between the two units is the fact that the 550 has a camera. Here's a comparison: http://www.gpscity.ca/compare/oreg450&oreg550
  15. thought I'd add this.... The reason I doubt it would be published is because of an event that happened around here a couple years ago, it was a tubing event, and I believe it was denied for commercial purposes. You should be fine with the meet and greet, then tubing after. That being said, I did do a river tubing event that didn't necessarily require you to pay, but paying made a lot easier to get back.
  16. I highly doubt that a tubing event that requires cachers to pay to attend would not get by a reviewer as it is a commercial event.(http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#commercialcaches) What might work is having a small meet and greet close to the tubing place(maybe bring some hot chocolate and warm treats), and go tubing after the event with those who wish to do it.
  17. First of all, I think this is the wrong forum. Second of all, if you don't like them, don't go find them. There are plenty of people who enjoy these series.
  18. I'm guessing you were trying to enter that text in the short description box, try putting it in the long description box and see if that works.
  19. There is something you need to change in the settings of your account to be able to accept friend requests. (Your Account Details> Your Preferences>Change>Allow Friend Requests) You do not need to be a premium member to do it. Hope this helps!
  20. My first 2 5/5 caches were events, and I don't think either should have really been rated that high. I have found a few other 5/5 caches, but they were all swimming caches, sure special equipment was required, but they weren't hard to find and probably didn't deserve the D5 rating.
  21. Even the feeling of being the first to find a cache in the spring after a long cold winter is good. We don't really get those kind of winters over here, but I've found some higher altitude caches that hadn't been found since 2 seasons ago and thought it was cool to open the cache and see how it survived.
  22. I believe one of the first ones I ever found was while Kayaking in a summer camp around 2007 or 2008. There was a large log poking out into the lake from the shoreline, and out of curiosity I decided to check it out. Turns out there was a container at the end of the log! I signed my name but didn't really learn too much about geocaching until some years later. Kind of cool to think that my first cache was a T5...
  23. Good to see you're having fun! I don't see any logged caches on your profile, so you may want to log your find on that cache you found. Did you trade for the pikachu? Always remember to Trade UP or Even if you want to trade. Happy Caching!
  24. Finally had a chance to try and install it again, and this time without problems. Map looks great! I'm guessing you're using OSM data as I can see some trails I added on there, on your map. Cool!
