    Stunod,

Just wondering - the SD card you tried to upgrade from - was it formatted in the GPSr, or was it formatted somewhere else? I had trouble basemap switching using the SD card until I formatted the card in my MeriGold - now it comes off without a hitch, as did my 5.12 upgrade, and my personalized 5.12 upgrade.

In the past, there have been different versions of firmware for Plat/Gold and Color units. I would suggest NOT trying to load mgold_512.hex into a color unit. Either wait until version 5 firmware is posted for the Meridian color, or call Magellan and complain about not being able to use a brand-new 128MB Sandisk SD card with your Meridian color, and ask them to send you the new firmware so that you're able to use your new GPS, and not have to return it. icon_smile.gif

  3. That's the ticket! icon_smile.gif I'm now the proud owner of a personalized MeriGold with firmware version 5.12. I actually skipped a few steps, and went straight to the SD card (PersonalizedFilename=E:firmware.hex), then used hidden menu 88 to install this version over the existing 5.12.

Henny Pa, do you want to take care of updating the ini file on the Yahoo section? If not, I'll do it.

  4. The program MyMeridian can be found at the other geocaching site, or on the Yahoo Meridian group. It replaces the text of the lawyer screen with personalized information (name, address, email, "reward if found"). It's an extra insurance policy should I lose my GPSr. I had it working with 3.12, 4.02, and 4.06, but it won't locate the text correctly in 5.12.

The program produces a personalized edition of the firmware, which you would have to upload to the device. It's not for the faint of heart.

From what I can remember, I think the position has always been in the center of the north-up screen. I rarely used course-up or track-up, but when I did, I noticed the difference. I checked my SporTrak Color, running 4.08, and it does the same thing - position in the center for north-up.

  6. 5.12 up and running on my MeriGold...

The Pos-Dest and Origin-Dest lines are different - kinda shaded pattern lines, rather than solid lines.

I loaded 5.12 as firmware.hex on my working SD card to try an SD update, rather than a serial update, and 4.06 recognized the new firmware, asked me if I wanted to update, and flawlessly updated to 5.12. Now I'm impressed.

Goto function is different - now you get a list with the regions at the top, then user waypoint, then cities, etc. If you have "nearest to" selected at the bottom, you get another menu asking for position, cities, address, or other. Personally, I liked the old way better.

MyMeridian doesn't work with this version of the firmware.

I'll keep digging and report back on any more changes that I notice.

  7. I haven't had good experience with new Rayovac technology. I was using rechargable alkalines, then went to NiMH with an overnight charger. The first charger fried the batteries. I called Rayovac, who promptly replaced both the charger and the fried batteries. A few months after that, I pick up a one-hour charger. That charger fried the batteries. Rayovac replaced. Last month, I purchased a set of 1800 mAh AAs, which were listed as being compatible with my one-hour charger. Guess what? My one-hour charger fried the new batteries. Rayvac replaced my one-year-old one hour charger with a new one, which had the same model number as the older charger, but was a different color, and came with a 12 volt car adapter. If it were me, I would wait to see how this technology progresses. I can charge two sets of batteries between cache hunts - more than enough efficiency for me.

As for scorching hot - that's not good for any rechargable. If it gets hot enough to melt or shrink the plastic sleeve/label on the battery, it's too hot. You should be able to hold it in your hand at the end of the charge cycle. If not, I'd give Rayovac a call.

One quick note - Rayovac did right by me each time I had a problem. Their customer service was friendly and accomodating, and they stood behind their product.

  8. Actually, the SporTrak Color will be able to support the new Direct Route software.

    quote:
MapSend DirectRoute is sold alone or pre-packaged with a Magellan handheld GPS unit. The software is compatible with most Magellan Meridian® and SporTrak® handhelds, including Meridian Color, Meridian Gold, Meridian Platinum, Meridian Marine, SporTrak Pro, SporTrak Pro Marine and SporTrak Color.

I agree with Wyatt on the SD card slot, though. I travel a fair amount of the time for work, and will continue to take the MeriGold for the ability to quickly and easily update the maps. I'll use the SporTrak Color at home - I've got the entire state of MN loaded - let's hope I can do that with Direct Route in a few months.

  9. On the other side of the fence, which looked greener when I was over there, I would choose a SporTrak Color for handheld use (and showing off), and a MeriGold to take advantage of unlimited memory with SD cards. I'm hoping that the new autorouting software lives up to the hype...

  10. Like Dekaner, I found a SporTrak Color on my doorstep at home yesterday. The letter inside the box made no mention of any of the other prizes.

I did get a response from Magellan to my "what's going on" email. It said:

    quote:
Letters notifying winners should are being mailed this week through the following two weeks.

Winners will also be posted on the website within the next week or two.

Thank you for participating in our contest.

  11. I just purchased a set of new Rayovac 1800mAh AA batteries and charged them in my year-old 1-hour PS-4 charger, which I've used with 1600mAh AAs with no problem. Two of the new batteries got so hot the plastic on the outside shrunk and cracked. I contacted Rayovac customer service, and they're sending out new batteries and a new charge (and a prepaid label to return the old system) - no other questions asked.

If you've got an old PS-4 (non- charger, give Rayovac a call.

I don't know what specifically causes the time shift, but I noticed it after doing a basemap switch using menu-86. As I posted earlier, a complete reset fixed the issue.
