Should I update my Mapsource from version 5.4 to 6.3??? The new update came out the end of last month. Lots of "fixes" and some new features... Too many to list, but if anyone is familiar, or has upgraded, or contemplated it -- please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Bozz

I don't remember seeing a place in my eTrex Legend that tells you TOTAL memory used, just TRACK LOG usage.... sure this is not what your looking at??? Bozz

I would update the firmware on the VISTA -- unless you have the newest already. Could it be that the Almanac data needs to be acquired??? Try leaving the Vista stationary for 30 mins. or so locked on -- maybe it will get more data so it can lock-on easier. Other than that, Antenna may not be as good on the Vista (or faulty). Bozz

If you want to load lots of maps, you will want to go with the Vista or 60C if its in the budget. I have a Legend, and have about 2 to 3 counties (large ones) with both Topo and Metroguide in it with no problem. If you get a Legend, and the maps -- be sure and turn off the "Autorouting" information when you go to load the maps (since it doesn't work anyhow). I'd say it depends on how big of an area you need loaded... but, the more memory the better when your dealing with maps. Bozz

You got a good deal for the Legend and Metroguide for $150! Might want to consider a belt clip case to protect it... I use mine a lot. Bozz

For some reason, my PQ's are not getting generated. Had it setup for Thurs. to run, but even though I have added generation days, etc. I have not received a PQ, and it does not show it has beem generated since 2/6/04. Not sure what is going on! When you hit the new "Generate" button, does it ONLY do it for display on the screen, or does it get emailed as well? Kinda bummed, need my updates to keep the paperless caching going! HELLP! Bozz

That is correct, the Yellow eTrex will not accept maps as it has no memory to do so. A useful thing to do though is to get the data cable and use EasyGPS or GSAK for uploading the waypoints to your GPS. Works great, even with the Yellow. Bozz

A PC cable is NICE! Especially when you mark the caches on your cache search page, download the .LOC files, and then upload them via EasyGPS (or other software). Saves lots of time, and your data is ACCURATE. Like someone else said, once you make an error entering coordinates by hand,and spend an hour looking for a cache .5 miles from the actual location -- you'd be willing to spend that cable-money! However, you still need to get proficient in entering coordinates by hand in the field, unless you drag a laptop around and do it that way (a little heavy). Bozz

Another way to get more details of creeks and such would be to have the USA TOPO from Garmin, you can load you area into it, and it "might" show you that creek. Its happened to the best of us, however I have been fortunate since I got the Topo maps from Garmin. Bozz

Hmmmm, I stand corrected! However, this is no really easy feat to do all of this.... you can almost zoom out to a manageable level, then make turns to follow the path of the "crow". We do this when we are geocaching and we don't know where the park is, or cache area. The units by Garmin that will are: (this may not be complete) Garmin III Garmin V Garmin 2610 Garmin 60c (I think) There may be others, but I mainly am knowledgable with their handheld units. Bozz

I agree, CacheMate ROCKS! It is inexpensive, easy to use, thorough, and -- the creator of this software LISTENS to his customers, and updates constantly to make it better. You get all the updates for FREE -- this program is a bargain. There are lots of topics on CacheMate, and the author of it goes by "Maeglin" -- nice guy. Bozz

Unfortunately, Team 010 -- the Garmin Legend w/Metroguide (or any other software for that matter) will NOT give you turn-by-turn directions. When you set a point to Nav to, it gives you "as a crow flies" only, not following any roads or anything. It still can be used for street navigating, albeit you have to be a little creative in your driving and following the "trail" that it shows from point A to B. As for S&T allowing you to import route info -- can't be done either. None of the eTrex series GPS's by Garmin will do routing. Sorry! Bozz P.S. - Something VERY cool with it though is that you can hookup the GPS to a laptop and use S&T to route you and show you where you need to turn, etc. It doesn't talk to you though -- you'd need different software for that.

I have heard from people that know -- v4 of Metroguide is better for Geocaching... v5 is better for finding restaraunts and POI's. Bozz

I cannot comment on the SportTrak.... because I have a Garmin Legend. This unit is a great all around unit, with mapping capabilities, nice navigation around the menus, etc., and compact. I would recommend the Legend to anyone looking to buy a GPS. Only drawback I can think of is the screen size. Not everyone could effectively read it! Bozz

Understood, I appreciate the prompt response and explaination (not that it's totally comprehended), I believe there are database issues and color issues with the newer OS's. Either way, those are MINOR things in the scheme of things. Bozz

I have a suggestion for Cachemate -- which is by the way, a great program. A few things actually: 1. Continue to Highlight in color your Bookmarked caches while in "nearest caches" view. 2. Have a normal sorted view of Nearest caches, kind of like you have the by waypoint / name -- eleviating the need for a seperate sort thru the menu. If this is NOT possible (or wanted), then make it return to the sorted by Nearest view once you exit out of viewing a cache - so you don't have to go back and do a Last Search to see them sorted that way. 3. More color integration to "spruce things up". Of course, the first two being infinately more important in my eyes. Thanks for the great program! Bozz

I will add my .02 worth.... Decided to try getting all the cache data into my Palm, because I found it to be a pain when the family said "Lets go Geocaching", and ole' Dad wasn't prepared with the printouts. So..... Tried Cachemate, had a question about it, emailed for support -- got a response in under an HOUR (late at night too), with a complete thorough explaination of what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. I did it, and then bought the program a few days later. Well written, friendly, and good support. Everything I look for in software! Bozz
