  1. Adventuregear... I think thats what its called. Up on King street in Waterloo just before the Chapters between Weber and Columbia I am pretty sure has write-in-the-rain style note pads. Worth a look.
  2. Look in places that you wouldn't think to look. As we hide them from muggles I find that caches are in places where the eye just passes over.
  3. cool, im going to try that Wow. Let me know if it works. If so I can have some fun with this
  4. Welcome to the sport/hobby/lifestyle/obsession I used an Iphone for a while and got decent results but a GPSr is the best way to go. I am pretty sure that the touch doesn't actually have a built in GPS chippy thingy but there there is a cradle/dock that you can plug into it that acts as one. Your best bet is getting a handheld GPS device. I got my eTrek off of Kijiji for 75$. Not as fancy as some of the paperless ones that you can get but it does the trick.
  5. Was it for a FTF and if so was it worth it?
  6. I did this!! I was one of the 50 students... had to take my GPS... logged three that week. Great fun! You know you're addicted when: -even your horse knows when you're going geocaching because you have a GPS mount for your saddle! -you name your GPS (mine are Lola and Martha) -everyone you know saves old tupperware/margaine/PB/pill containers for you. -you have so many unplaced caches your housekeeper refuses to clean your "caching room" -you have a "caching room" I named my GPS The Beagle. Ala Charles Darwin's ship. Hehe. My girlfriend just calls it Cachy.
  7. We came across this newborn near one of Geowyz's caches a while back. We've crossed paths with lots of critters while caching,, lots of snakes, alligators, a bobcat, wild hogs, and an owl in a hollow tree. Thankfully, none of the dead carcusses we encountered were of the human type! Definately the cutest cache ever. I won't even make any venison jokes. Mostly because my girlfriend is watching me type this and will hit me if I do
  8. Respect, now there's one really interesting word. How do you mean?
  9. Do you do anything to protect your smart phone when geocaching? Otterbox Defender Case Do you carry phone insurance because you intend on using it more outside and if something does happen the insurance will cover it? Only the basic Apple iCare Any helpful tips, tricks or techniques you use that would be helpful to others in regards to the applications or use of your smart phone while geocaching? I carry a Palmpilot and a GPSr so I dont have to take the celly out as much.
  10. The way I see it is that in particular some old pioneer cemetaries are all but forgotten and the people buried there are as well. Anything that would bring people to respect them and read thier stones once more is doing good. I still feel strange when I am excavating a cemetary (I'm an archaeologist, not a crazy don't worry ) but so long as you treat them with respect then its all good. When I am excavating a cemetary its usually because its about to be distroyed either by nature (like eroson) or it is going to be built on top of. Just my two cents.
  11. I am so excited for the weekend, espically after the cold weather and rain we've had for the last few days. Maybe I'll see you along the trails at some point seeing how you're from Halton Hills
  12. Awesome, sounds good. The PDA I am looking at has 16mb internal and also a memory slot, and the GPX files aren't that big so I assume the converted file would be much the same. Thanks for your help
  13. Howdy! I am looking to get cachemate for a palmpilot that I am looking to get for those overseas roadtrips and after solving one question (Cachemate to Garmin waypoint transfers are a go!) I have another. In cachemate is it possible to separate my cachelistings (like different pocket queries) or do they all come in as a block? I dont have cachemate yet and I was just wondering if this was doable as I like to stay organised. Know what I mean?
  14. Much like what everyone else has been saying the cachers have been warned and ultimately it's up to them if they want to go after it. They know the dangers.
  15. I think there is also a case for different strokes for different folks. And by that I mean everyone has thier own likes and dislikes in a cache. Some people like easy park and grabs, some people only cache with their families and as such these people wouldn't like or want to have to delve down into a cave and fight off bats with one hand and hope the GPSr gets reception with the other. Some people hate urbans, some people like them the list goes on. I understand that some caches are, in a technical perspective, better done than others (in terms of cache placement, cache type, camoflaguing skills), but when it comes to ice cream flavors I am always going to like tiger tail more than any others. Know what I mean jelly bean?
  16. Helps me destress from exams and papers and as such I smoke less now. Always a plus. Less smoking = more money = Garmin Oregon 550. Muhahaha
  17. Im still new at this but I am pretty sure before you are a premium member you can only download LOC files, the GPX files contain all the details about the cache like hints and I think the last 5 logs (correct me if I am wrong someone). It doesn't work on all GPSr's but the new fangled ones that have built in geocaching abilities can relay the information.

    Using hints

I look at hints and recent logs before I get to the cache GZ or at least before I really start looking. Do you do the same or do you only look at the hint/logs after you have already started searching?
  19. A possom, my girlfriend wanted to pet it (she is from the big city). Living on the edge
  20. Great! Simple enough. Thanks a lot
  21. Great now I will be even more parinoid when I am caching. []
  22. And oh what an adventure! I was walking my friend home tonight from a night of, how you say, debauchery (Friday night in a university town, you know) and we set off at about 4am. At this point I figure “Whats the point in sleeping now” so I walked her home (all gentlemanly like) and I was walking back to my place. At this point its like 5am. So I am walking home and I pass one cache in the park, and while I am oh so tempted I am not willing to risk it sans flashlight and with a dying Iphone (just in case I get super lost). So I continue my journey back and I remember that there is another cache at a local mega-bookstore that I wanted to get. But usually the area is packed with muggles so I think to myself “Well now would be a great time to grab it” but ALAS! I am without Winston my trusty caching pen (as I usually don’t go out at night with caching in mind). I continue on my way home and I pass a gas station so I stop in. Lo and behold they aren’t open yet but luckily for me there is a fellow there delivering newspapers so I barter a pen off of him. As I continue on my way I arrive at the cash at about 530am and after a quick mix up, which was easily resolved I finally found the hidden magnetic nano, and as I figured the area was completely muggle free so I felt in necessary to dance along the major street back home. Spectacular. So I continue on my way home and finally make it in at about 545am. Woo hoo! Just wanted to share before I crash after not sleeping all night.
  23. Howdy all, I just picked up a second hand Garmin Etrex Legend H (just to tie me over untill I get the Oregon 550) and I want to do a full reset on it. I was reading over the howto's and I really dont get the WAAS alamanac part of it. So do I basically just leave it out and hope for the best? Because I really dont get the WAAS Almanac online. I will probably have more questions verryyy soon --Eshel
  24. I use military surplus jackets for most things, geocaching and paintball included and I find that they work quite well plus they are dirt cheap, I paid about 10$ for mine.
  25. Ahhh! I was just about to mention yours! I am waiting for when I have more time and less papers this summer to work it out. Thank you seasons of Seinfeld on DVD!
