  1. Yup, that's why. Unfortunately not everything that looks waterproof is (we've found that out), and even things that ARE waterproof can leak if not resealed properly. The first ammo can we ever found had a soggy log. We now carry ziplocs with us to replace torn ones
  2. I want one real bad..... Sure hope I can get one!
  3. Maybe they're forum lurkers and your posts made them feel bad
  4. I'll add the oddball case, then. We've only found one MOC, and it was a PnG Lock n Lock, with very good swag. So, in the swag sense better than average, at least for a PnG. So far though, the most fun hide and the best swag hide have both been free caches. I got my membership for "caches along a route", because we travel to Oklahoma fairly often, and wanted to cache on the way. The MOC was just a bonus, it was actually on the route, so we'd have not even visited it without already being members anyway... if that makes sense. We also used a PQ when we got down there to find only "kid friendly" caches, to take Mandotheneset's little brother and sister along on. EDIT spelling
  5. Also, odd as it sounds, be sure to post your DNFs on the cache page! I did this just to record where we'd been, and a local cacher noticed that we were DNFing a lot of caches that (supposedly) were easy ones (one and two stars). Turns out they're all by the same guy and while the caches are certainly 1-2 star caches for experienced players, for a newbie (who still goes on hints and descriptions) they were very misleading. I.e. a cache called "Quarry" which has absolutely nothing to do with rocks Had the other cacher not emailed me I would probably still think I just wasn't looking under the right rock.... DNFs for the win! EDIT: For any of you over-zealous forumers who immediately looked up my profile for that DNF only to find that the placer explains the name... that's a recent edit. From the last week or so. Just sos you know.
  6. Don't do this! As cool as it sounds, drilling into a golf ball is VERY bad idea! Some have liquid centers, others with rubber bands... without knowing what your golf ball is made from you're taking a very dangerous risk, particularly when a power tool is involved as well!
  7. I'm happy to find ANY trackable, regardless of whether they have an icon or not. Travel bugs are actually a little cooler, cause they're always attached to something I've likely never seen before, and they're waaaaaay easier to keep track of just my two cents
  8. Well, until you get some experience stick to caches that are small size or bigger (no micros or nanos), traditional, and 2.5 difficulty or less. Unless you're an outdoorsy person to start with go with terrain 2.5 or less too. Maybe 2 or less on both of those even. Besides that, widen your search area to about a 30 foot radius, your GPS can be that much off, and so can the hiders. Stick with it! Once you get some practice you'll get better at noticing big piles of sticks and the like
  9. Just making sure... you know you're not supposed to keep those unless you find them "unactivated", right? EDIT for grammar. even if you find one unactivated you should try to contact the owner and see why its not activated, you shouldnt just keep it True, but if it's unactivated, how would you know? Obvioiusly if the last person to log a cache online said "left a whatever coin, please help it along" and you just HAPPEN to find an unactivated coin that is the same coin, yeah, that's probably theirs... but if you find one and there's no mention of it... then what? I found an unactivated coin and did quite a lot of checking around to make sure it was meant to be swag before I kept it. So yeah... use the common sense. I guess that's all I'm saying
  10. I know but I have to get a serial to USB adapter to plug it into my computer, and I've heard the reliability of doing it this way isn't so great. I didn't know about the nearest waypoint feature though, that'll definately come in handy in the meantime. Thanks!
  11. Oh, nifty. Thanks for the info, that looks like the way to go. Now to find a cheap one Probably will be a couple weeks before I have any spare cash anyway
  12. What's "area calculation"? Also, can it do the thing I was talking about where it shows you when there are caches nearby?
  13. We use a Garmin eTrex H now, but we are getting more into this and a GPS that lets you download waypoints directly would be better, I know you CAN do this with the H but it's not easy. It also doesn't do what I see other people talking about which is that you download the waypoints and it tells you when you're close to one. On the H you have to manually select a single waypoint based on the name you give it... so there's no way to know if you just happen to be 400 ft from a cache or something. I know other units can do this but I don't know what the feature is... so I don't know what to look for. I don't need street navigation, I have a Mio that I got for Christmas that works fine for that. Topo could be useful, but if it's going to cost a TON extra for that, it's probably not worth it. Unless it is, which... well, that why I'm posting. What do I need? Cheap is good but I know you get what you pay for... in a perfect world, I'd get a Colorado, but that would be welllll over the price range. Thanks for any replys.
  14. Well, here's the story: I was looking through the logs of cache I've DNFed on trying to get some hints, when I noticed a post from a cacher that they had taken a coin from the cache, but the coin was still listed as being there. I checked their profile, and they've found about as many caches as us, but had no trackables listed. So, I sent them this email: "Hi there, I noticed that you'd grabbed a geocoin from the "Jewel of the Nile" cache and just wanted to make sure you knew how to log it, since you haven't yet, and don't have any trackables listed on your account. If you need to know how, please feel free to reply to this email, and I'll give you the run-down Geocoin owners like to see their coins move, and a lot of them get lost because people don't know what they are. Anyway, please feel free to drop me an email. -Silfron" So... good call? I just don't want another geocoin to get lost to oblivion because someone doesn't know how to log it, or doesn't know they're supposed to move it. But I don't want this cacher to think I'm being... er... condescending I guess?
  15. Try sticking in a pillowcase to wash and dry. No idea why that works, but it does. Tie the pillowcase closed though, or it'll just fall out Good luck!
  16. If my truk is swag, its an old used golfball. I wonder what I can do to make it even more unattractive to theives. I could fill the back with horse crap but it would blow in the slider when I had it open and the windows down...I already have an NRA sticker. I'll have to ponder this...Ideas? Put a gun rack in the back window and don't leave a gun in it. That plus the NRA sticker = don't mess with you.
  17. True, but if you just reformat before you take it in for repairs.... Not that I'm advocating screwing a giant corporation out of several hundred dollars worth of apps or anything. Really.
  18. some things to say: Condition of the cache any problems in finding it (i.e. muggles) a clever little story about your experience That you took listed TBs (to move, of course) or that listed TBs aren't there. some things not to say: Spoilers (I.e. "found it in the crotch of a tree") that it's the worst find ever (even if it is) that you stole all the TBs from it (please don't DO that either ) Good luck hunting
  19. That's what I use, it's worked fine so far. Select the "mark" option to show your current position and then select the coordinates there to change them, which will let you mark the coordinates as a cache as a waypoint. Then select the waypoint, and go the direction the arrow points. Hope that made some sense.
  20. Ditto... there are a few caches in my area that have coins listed in them that have supposedly been in there for over a year! I always look at the coin page before heading for the cache though. If it was put in the cache sometime in 2006, yeah, not so much. When I finally get around to placing my first cache I'll make sure to mark them as missing when necessary though
  21. I found someone's coin in a cache that had been sitting there for almost a month, which doesn't seem long but someone had found the cache since it was dropped and didn't take it, and there were two bugs listed as being there that weren't. I think everyone just over looked it. The point being don't lose hope if you're coin is sitting in a cache that's been found but the coin hasn't moved. Some people just don't take them and sometimes they don't get noticed.
  22. You "grab" a TB when you have physically found it, but it's listed as being in someone else's possesion, rather than in the cache you found it in. Sometimes people drop them and forget to log them, or just don't know how to log them into caches. For example: Cacher A drops a TB into a cache, but when they log their find, forget that they dropped the TB and don't log it into the cache. Cacher B finds it, drops Cacher A a friendly email to see if they want to log it in to the cache, and if they don't or there is no reply, Cacher B "grabs" the TB from them. I believe it's good form to then log the bug in and out of the cache it was found in (for mileage), before logging it into wherever you drop it. Hope that made sense EDIT for bad spelling...
  23. Really? Taking someone else's property without permission and no intent to return it isn't stealing anymore? Wow. Sure... they may have permission to have it, but only upon the stipulation that they MOVE it, not KEEP it. Is there anything you can do about it? Of course not... but in my book, still illegal. my $.02
  24. Could someone tell me how to post pics? Not going to work on an icon (although I have an idea) until I'm sure I can actually post it
  25. I really really want a Tengwar coin. I bid on one on ebay but... well... I suck at ebay I also have nothing to trade. So... how would I get one? Is there any other way? Or do I just have to keep fighting with ebay? I'm new to this whole coin business but I REALLY love that Tengwar coin! I noticed it comes in a lot of finishes and I don't really care which one. I really liked the nickle and black nickle with the gold border and the silver (nickle?) one with the blue enamel, but really, don't care. The orange/ gold enamel was my least favorite, but meh - I like them all! All advice appreciated.
