  1. Since I upgraded to Adobe Reader 8.1.1 I have all sorts of problems with pdf files that I didn't have before. Did you have the same problems before you upgraded to 8.1.1?
  2. When I go paperless with my GPSr all I have loaded on it are the coordinates, the cache name, the type of cache, the size of the container, and the difficulty and terrain ratings. I find about 50% of the traditional caches that I search for that way. Not as good as when I have read the description and hints, but still good enough for me to do it that way a lot. Except for the cache name, all the rest of the info is independent of the language of the cache.
  3. On your account page you should see the link "edit profile."
  4. But what one person considers key information another person may consider useless information. How is TPTB to know what you consider key information? If you want to only print some of the information about a cache, then copy it to a Word document, edit it, and print it.
  5. Unless your 300 GB hard drive is completely filled with videos, you can download your PQ to a fresh database in GSAK. I probably have thirty or more databases in my GSAK. I keep copies of each of my "My Finds" PQ's so I can run stats against each of them to see how things have changed over time.
  6. Thank you The Leprechauns for trying to bring some sanity back into this thread! There are some people in this thread that need to walk away from their computer and go do some geocaching before they have a stroke.
  7. I put my find number in my online log. No need for GC.com to try to calculate it. So next to my handle is my current count and in my log is the count of this find. Simple.
  8. From my reading of this topic thread, there seems to be three (3) reasons for a cache to be archived: 1. No physical cache is allowed in the area, 2. Cache has been archived by owner for some reason other than number 1 above, usually that it was muggled too often, 3. Cache has been archived by local reviewer for some reason other than number 1 above, usually that it was abandoned by owner. I can think of no valid reason why caches in categories 2 and 3 should not be available for all to see in queries, listings, and maps. Only for category 1 archived caches can I see any justification for trying to hide their locations. Some loggers have already suggested some possible ways to handle this problem other than the present method of hiding all archived caches.
  9. You can go paperless without a PDA. I download from GSAK into my GPSr the following info about a cache: the type, the size, the difficulty, the terrain, and the cache name. With just that I have a 50% or better find rate.
  10. Using Windows Vista Home Basic with FireFox 2.0.0.7. When I click on the Submit Log Entry button I get the following error message: Server Error in '/' Application. Compilation Error Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. 11. YES!! It's very annoying when panning. The old maps panned correctly, if slowly. Also, the 15 mile limit is too limiting when caches are 20 miles or more apart.
  12. If the database designer had known how geocaching and GC.com was going to grow and evolve, then changing screen names would have been built in from the beginning. But the designer didn't know how things would evolve. We all will have to live with the present design until the next big revamp. Having spent almost twenty years designing database applications I am well aware that nobody can anticipate how an application is going to evolve over six or more years. Very few of my designs have lasted in production even five years. Usually by five years things have changed so much that it is more cost effective to start a whole new design from scratch than to try to modify the old application any more.
  13. While on an American Hiking Society trail project at an old Boy Scout camp in Ohio I got to talking with another of the people on the project about GPSrs, having just bought one before the trip. Turned out he was a geocacher but said there weren't any nearby geocaches (this was in 2003). When I told him that I had heard some guy talking to the camp manager that morning about hiding something in the camp, the geocacher got out his laptop and logged on to find that yes a cache had just been hidden in the camp that day. So we went out and found it. Thus my first cache find also turned out to be my first FTF. There were also two other caches that had been placed within an hour's drive of the camp that we went out and found the next day.
  14. I would post a note that the cache seemed inaccessible to the wheelchair bound and also send an e-mail to the cache owner explaining why you think it is not handicap accessible. The worst that can happen is for the owner to delete your note. But if he really meant for it to be handicap accessible, he should thank you for pointing out a problem.
  15. I have been geocaching a little over three (3) years now. Most of my caching is done in conjunction with my travels. When I am planning a trip somewhere I also check to see what caches are along the routes to my destination and what caches are near my destination. What got me into geocaching and what keeps me doing it is the fun of going to some places that I would never bother with otherwise. I've been to a lot of old buildings, cemeteries, historical plaques, parks, etc. that I probably would never take the time to stop and see otherwise. But I am glad that I did. I always hope my GPSr can get me within 20-30 feet (6-10 meters) of the cache from which I use the clues and my experience to find the cache. But I am aware that there are many situations in which my GPSr can only get me within 50-60 feet (16-20 meters). Has geocaching changed over the years? Yes. In some respects it has gotten better, while in some other respects it has gotten worse. All you have to do is read these forums to get various opinions on how it has gotten better and worse over time. You have my permission to use any of the above in your article.
  16. Close. If you ride a motorcycle, your a 'biker.' If you ride a bicycle, your a 'cyclist.' I've never understood that one either. What if I do both? Am I a Bikist? Yes, if you do both at the same time.
  17. One of the caches I found was a 5 gal. bucket that was sitting in the middle of a weed infested vacant lot in a suburban neighborhood. The weeds were more than 2 feet taller than the bucket. Weeds around here grow year round. If a muggle ever finds that bucket the HAZMAT team will be called since the bucket originally contained hazardous chemicals. But it had been there for over a year before I found it.
  18. I'm into geocaching for the hunt, not for the swag. I don't take things, even when there is a $20 bill in the cache (yes, I found a cache with a $20 bill in it), unless it is moldy junk that I take to the nearest trash bin. If the cache description says that you must list the swag you traded or your log will be deleted, then I ignore that cache. Most of the rules of GC.com deal with hiding caches, not finding caches. So if you stay withing the few rules for finding caches, then you can play the game as you see fit.
  19. Some caches have nothing positive that can be said about them. Thus TNLNSL.
  20. I agree, there is a need for checks and balances. If not a photo then what? Maybe we could harken back to the old-fashioned virtual method, require finders to answer questions that they would only find if they visit the site? JARS Yes!!!
  21. I have to disagree with you Jeremy that folks will not try to mark everything. I, and many others from my readings of the Waymarking forums, would like to be able to add interesting things to whatever category they may belong to. When I see an interesting building I would like to be able to find the building category it best fits and waymark it. When I see an interesting place I would like to be able to find the place category it best fits and waymark it. And when I will go hunting for existing waymarks, I will not just hunt for one or two categories, I will try to hunt for all existing waymarks in the area.
  22. tozainamboku said: Ok. Cacher A's motivation is to find as many caches as possible. The so-called lame urban hides are the favorites of this cacher because they can be found quickly and there is no need to stand around admiring the scenery behind the strip mall. Cacher B's motivation is to visit interesting places that they didn't know about. They like caches in near an historic location or where there is a scenic view. Cacher C's motivation is to have a cache to find on a hike that they were going to take anyway. Cacher D's motivation is to be challenged by a clever hide or camouflage. So we understand that TrailGators isn't cacher A. Rather than criticizing Cacher A or the caches he hides, lets look at ways to identify caches that Cacher A enjoys and similarly for Cachers B, C and D. I know TrailGators has proposed a rating system in other threads. The proble with that rating system is that it assumes everyone likes the same kind of caches as TrailGators. Instead why not rate cache on several different criteria. For example - Cache is a quick park and grab, Cache is in a scenic or historic locations, Cache requires a hike or other physical challenge, Cache is challenging due to cammo or hiding technique. What you are asking for are attributes rated on some scale such as 0 and 1, 0 meaning this attribute doesn't exist for this cache, and 1 meaning the attribute does exist for this cache. So Cacher A will look for caches with a PnG of 1, Cacher B will look for caches with Interesting Place of 1, Cacher C looks for Hikes 1, and Cacher D looks for Camouflaged 1. Jeremy & Co. probably would do something like this if enough cachers asked for it.
  23. Wow! Double Wow! The lame micro defense team must all be out caching this labor day weekend. This has to be one of the most unanimous "crappy cache threads" I've ever seen So the post I'm quoting above. Nice small picnic areas known only to employees of the center. I'm sure it's nice for the employees, seing as it was provided by their employer, and of course is private property. There's a better chance I'll be struck by lightning as I'm typing this that the cache was placed there with permission. Shopping centers are private property open to the public. I doubt that any of the caches hidden in the parking lots out front were placed with permission. None of these picnic areas out back had no tresspassing signs or signs saying for employees only. They were as open to the public as the rest of the shopping center. So what's your problem? Your complaint doesn't seem to have anything to do with the topic at hand.
  24. Sorry, Confucius Cat, but that's the cowards way out. If you don't have the guts to post a SBA, at least e-mail the local reviewer and let him know about it.
  25. I'll agree that a cache next to a dumpster is no fun to find, but all caches behind shopping centers are not disgusting. Several times I found that caches behind shopping centers were hidden in nice, small picnic areas that probably were only known to the employees of the center.
