  1. I'm using my dual suspension Cannondale mountain bike to get to places in a 20 mile radius from my house. Here's a pic: Geocachers need to hike and bike more when getting to their caches, don't you think? :-)
  2. Has anyone thought of or mentioned combining geocaching with orienteering where people would have to run to find a designated number of hides (let's say in a 10 square mile area) in the fastest time? I guess using a digital camera to show pics of each hide would determine if each runner found all the designated hides? These hides/caches would only be put out for the event and removed afterwards. The geographical area would only be announced a day before the event to prevent participants from reconnoitering the topograhy of the area. One could use a topo map and/or a GPSr with built in topo maps to determine the most efficient approach to finding all the hides. Ther total distance to be run would be about 5K (3.1 miles) or more if one has difficulty finding the hide? The only problem I foresee is what to do if another participant sees someone else accessing a hide?
  3. I've set up a cache where one has to cross a stream balancing on two logs. It's only about 8 ft. wide and the stream isn't that deep but it makes the "hunt" more interesting It would be interesting to require cachers to overcome a series of obstacles before they can access a cache?
  4. I've just recently created 4 caches (Siwanoy Trail #1, 2, 3, 4) in the northeastern part of NYC in Pelham Bay Park = awesome forest /water views. See my thread "NYC pics" in this forum for 2 examples of what I'm talking about.
  5. I live near Pelham Bay Park and love to run/hike/geocache there. There are some awesome scenic places there which non-NYC'ers find hard to believe. I'll post 2 of my favorites: If you live in NYC, please post some beautiful pics so that others can see that NYC isn't all about Manhattan ;-) Alex
  6. This is the type of terrain I geocache in the northern part of NYC in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Most people have a hard time believing this is part of NYC.
  7. Hi, I'm Alex. I'm a retired teacher who's trying to stay in shape since I've always done lots of competitive activities and now I can mix long distance trail running/hiking with some adventure/fun. I did the 6 day stage race = Goretex TransRockies run (106 miles, all above 9.000 ft.) at age 60. I'll be 62 next week. I live right next to Pelham Bay Park (largest forest/open water park) in NYC. Am planning to plant more caches than I find/seek since I like following my own paths on the trails there.
  8. As for gear, I also use trekking poles to help with dense underbrush, poking into crevices and seeing how wet or muddy it is in marsh areas. My red Camelbak w 3L bladder, Garmin Colorado 300t, and trekking poles
