  1. Thanks much. I'd rather not go the .pdf route, as I'd like it to appear in the cache listing itself. I just tried saving as *.htm, but it seems that you have to have this specific font loaded on your computer for this to work. I'll tinker with the screen shot idea - I think that might do the job. JHW.
  2. I need to include a rather specific font on the webpage for a new cache. Is there some way to output the text from a text editor or work processor as some sort of image that can be loaded into an html formatted web page? All I can think of is to print it, photograph it, and post the jpeg. But there must be a better way. All I have is Wordpad, but I can get access to MS Word if needed. Or? TIA, JHW
  3. It's a bit tough to tell from the profiles, but it appears that the only ones that have found my month old puzzle cache are from out of state. No one locally seems interested.
  4. Yowza, yahoo, and yippee! It works. Left clicking to bring up the photo doesn't result in the option to "copy shortcut", but simply right clicking on the link itself does bring it up. Thanks. One other difficulty... The photos and text show up consecutively - ie: "text" "photo" "text", etc. I can't seem to get: "text" "photo" "text" on separate lines. I need something like the old fashioned <cr> <lf>, or <nl> or somesuch.

  6. Thanks, but I don't have the images on a site that I can reference. I'm uploading them directly to the cache listing. Any way to get them interspersed in the text?
  7. Yes, there is a facility to add a photo, but it merely shows as a link at the bottom of the listing. I'd like to insert the photo in the body of the text. Is this available somehow in plain text, or do I have to resort to HTML (which I'm not very good at.....). Thx.
  8. Actually, all you had to do is click on the link I provided in my message, to add the tool. If you don't have *any* tools installed, that link doesn't show. Only the "more map content" (or whatever it was). But after an optional tool is in place, additional ones can be added just as you describe. But not the first one.
  9. Beautiful Downtown Roseburg OR: 1 mile - 12 5 miles - 27 10 miles - 41 25 miles - 103 50 miles - 1017 As you get beyond 25 miles, you actually reach places where people live.
  10. OK, thanks. It wasn't quite that easy nor intuitive, as you have to click on a link something to the effect of "more map content" or somesuch, and then click on a large "Add" button on the next page. This comes up with a large number of selectable tools. Great! Thanks again.
  11. I've figured out that you can enter coords in the "Search Maps" box, but is there any way to have the coords of where the cursor is pointing displayed?
  12. Different people like different challenges. I'm heading to Portland in a few hours and I am presently downloading all the puzzles and multis in the area. There are some interesting ones based upon the board game "Clue", as well as some "Inspector Gadget" hides involving some tools that you must find. I'm an asphalt guy who doesn't like poison oak and snakes.
  13. I could tag this onto other similar topics, but I figure that if I ask it and it gets quickly answered, it will rapidly disappear into the never ending bit bucket.......... Legend HCx....... Should I hold it horizontally or vertically? I keep hearing talk about "helix" antennnas, etc, but I don't know for sure how to hold the Legend. In a way, vertically would be neat, as then I can keep up the "cell phone" cover for those max muggle areas! But I suspect that horizontal is optimum for this unit. Definitive answer??
  14. How about EasyGPS? It will automatically load the hints into a Legend. Also, it will optionally save the cache coords listing as the cache name and not GCXXXX. Some may like the identifier, I prefer to look up by name. Edit: What I meant by "automatically load the hints into a Legend" is that it will take the downloaded .gcx file and automatically insert the hints into the Legend w/o user editing. Just open the file in EasyGPS and then send to your GPSr. It's all done for you.
  15. Hmm.... Yes, a possibility. Good idea. My current idea is simply a book perhaps sitting on top of a bookcase. The book would be readily identifyable to anyone looking. No, not astrophysics, but a novel in keeping with the theme of the cache description that would be just a bit too recent to properly be there. However, I would put explicitly in the descriptions to not touch anything w/o permission. Not much here that can really be damaged, tho. It's an old house with historic photos and memorabilia of it's occupants. The curators don't even seem to mind if you sit on some of the furniture. BTW, I really appreciate the suggestions.
  16. Why Victorian era British coins, of course! (actually, some of them are slightly newer........) Gotta go now, The game is afoot!
  17. Yes, it will likely have to be a puzzle or a multi. There needs to be GPS use involved and that doesn't mean just bringing you to the parking lot. Perhaps you can have the GPS bring searchers to a container hidden near the parking lot, which contains a clue regarding the final location. That would be a multi, but would satisfy the need for GPS use. I would like, if you would, a bit of clarification on all this - ie: GPS use. The building is an old wooden house and quite small. I could get reasonably accurate coords of the front door, and the actual hiding spot would likely be no more than 20' or so from that point. I could also estimate with reasonable degree of accuracy the "real" coords based upon distance and direction from the front door. (Approx 6' per .001 lat, 4.5' per .001 long) Standing at the door, the GPS should point distance and direction remaining before actual entry. As for "container hidden near the parking lot", there is no parking lot. Just curb side parking with the front door some 10' from the sidewalk. But, yes, a simple puzzle or multi that could be solved in advance is a possibility if you don't think it would detract severely from participation.
  18. Wow. My hat's off to the 80+ - and especially to the 90+ - cachers.
  19. I alluded to this in a different topic.... I am planning on placing a hide inside of a local museum. My motivation is to help generate a bit more well desired traffic for this no entry fee, all volunteer historic site. They would like to actract locals and tourists alike, as many locals don't know about it, or know about it but haven't ever visited. I'm going to use a hollow book for the actual cache, and this may/could provide a reasonable challenge in itself. So... How difficult? I suspect that travelers trying to log the most smileys will pass by any multi or puzzle, no? Locals, however, may appreciate a bit more of a challenge. If you were passing thru and stopped to pick up the various 1/1s, would you consider a simple multi? Or a "traditional" with perhaps a bit of a puzzle on the cache listing? Or just simply the coords, period? Or? Aesthetically I'd like to not make it too simple, but that might be counterproductive in this case. TIA.
  20. My first receiver was a simple basic Etrex H. (don't know the software level....) It had the best functioning distance reading and compass pointer. I mean, the real time update was smooth and consistent. Accuracy was outstanding. I have since upgraded to a Legend HCx. (software 2.40/2.40) Distance, compass, and accuracy are all a definite step down from the "H". Yes, I guess that the basic hardware is the same and in theory it should function just as well, but I guess the software is what is making the difference. Compass is jumpy while walking, distance updates erratically, and it takes a long time to settle down when stationary. (in comparison to the "H") Others have commented that it does not seem to like low velocity (walking speed). But the additional functionality makes up for the operational glitches, I guess. Maybe a future software update will improve things? (not going the 2.60 route.....) Oh, and PS: I've read elsewhere about the abysmal reception of the "non-H" models. Haven't tried one personally, but the H picks up a signal just about anywhere. What it does with it is another issue......
  21. Yowza. Thanks. Good stuff. I have an old novel (I'm not disclosing details.....) that is terribly and horribly reproduced. Amost unreadable. It looks like a bad photocopy job from the '30s. However, the cover looks like an old 'vintage' book. Altho I treasure the contents, the book itself is worthless, and the particular book is available easily for little $$$ and in more readable format. No loss..... Now, if only we could all team up and gut the inside of all of those trash romance novels......... Just imagine: 1,000,000 library caches!
  22. Actually, I plan on putting it on a bookshelf in a museum. With permission, of course. Preliminary talks underway. I'm still deciding on how tough to make finding the location. On one hand, I'm into puzzles and multis. But this museum would appreciate the traffic that might be generated by a simple "1/1".
  23. This was the only significant error that I found in 2 days of urban caching. Usually my position was spot on in reference to the CN maps, or else the "(in)accuracy circle" was large enough to cover my real position. I don't know if batteries may have been an issue. They pooped out after perhaps another 2 hours of use.
