  1. This is the worse possible time for this problem to be happening as I just started my trip. My GPS handheld was working fine until I removed the AA batteries for charging. As soon as I reinserted the batteries, this problem started.

My Garmin GPSMAP 66S suddenly become non-functional with the message "Updating GPS firmware" and going 0% then 1% (see attached screenshot) and the message disappearing and no GPS function.

Unfortunately, I don't have a laptop/computer with me as I'm out of the country. I only have an Android and iPhone with me and the Garmin app installed. I don't know how else to troubleshoot and fix the GPS unit. I tried a hard reset and the problem didn't go away. My handheld is using the latest firmware. I think it's 2.70? I recalled updating it before I left for my trip.

    Help?

  2. I checked the specs of the eTrex SE and it doesn't seem like it can record a track log? My purpose for this device would be to record a track log with a one-second interval.

I'm curious if the Garmin 67's antenna makes it more accurate than the eTrex SE?

I wonder what the battery life of the 67 is recording a track log with a one-second interval and no backlight?

    Recharging time from 0%-100%?

Well... I guess this means Garmin is no longer interested in supporting its hand-held touch screen offerings (I don't consider the Montana 700 to be a handheld. It barely fits in one hand.)

    Long live the Oregon line.

Money talks. I kinda wished Garmin's touchscreen devices adopted dual-frequency GNSS. Perhaps they're not selling enough to justify product development?

I agree. Atlas has been great over the years giving out info here as well. And like the GPSrChive for what it is.  I've owned gps units since 1995 and before that LoranC for work and pleasure of all types like Marine, Auto,Hiking.  And saved my life a few times I'm sure. Love the new units out now. And upgrade as much as I can. Garmin makes great stuff. Always did.

To the OP I saw a utube review out now on accuracy of the 67 vs the 66 and it seems to be better for sure.  I run the Garmin 700 now for hiking and love the  Lithium battery it uses. I bought another for a spare to carry. I tried Garmins AA adapter but found it bulky and made the unit heavier. The Lithium does a much better job all around.  Carry a Lithium storage block if worried about running out with a 67.

I think I watched the same YouTube video as you. When selecting multiband, it doesn't seem like one can pick which GNSS to use. So which systems will the 67 connect to? The 66i in the video clearly selected GPS+Galileo.

    Classic virtue signaling!

You can go into a bar and ask the bartender how to rewire your house, and have a friendly conversation about it, but you can also go into a library where all the useful information is already organized and cataloged for you to find!

This is how we learned new things before the age of an incredibly lazy generation that must be mouth fed absolutely everything!

Again, nobody says you have to visit any websites you find offensive. All of the information is there for those willing to discover it.

You can re-write the same book over and over as many times as you like, or you can read the one that is already written!

We all have a personal choice to use one source or multiple sources to get the information we desire. I do not understand why some are so offended and threatened when alternate or additional options are presented.

Make your choice. Let others make thiers. Move on.

Your website is garbage and stop telling me to visit it. I don't want to help you generate any revenue. Furthermore, stop responding to my posts since you have nothing constructive to add. I don't want your help anymore.

It’s too bad specific questions can’t be answered where they were asked, rather than using the forums as a portal to your website.

I find people like him to be inherently unhelpful and to be frank, toxic. I don't understand this search this up yourself sort of attitude. If he doesn't want to answers then don't bother. The guy is ridiculous and he's been posting like this for ages.

Everyone uses these for different purposes.

You can not get best results from any GPSr if you have the Map displayed constantly with the backlight at full power.

My GPSMAP 67 have been connected to PC from time to time to load data etc. I have never connected them to power because the battery was getting too low. I have not performed any dedicated battery testing yet.

I am not paid or employed by Garmin.

How were you able to get your hands on a unit so quickly?

I just read that Garmin added a USB-C port. If true, that's huge! Can you confirm this?

It's amazing that Garmin supports all the major GNSS. I don't think the 66sr supported Beidou.

Can you confirm how many constellations it can connect to simultaneously to get the best accuracy?

  8. I usually have the backlight at the lowest possible brightness to conserve battery power. However, I read that I can turn off the screen completely while it's still connected to GPS installation to preserve battery life. However, I can't tell if it's connected to GPS in that situation. Is there any way such as a light indicator that can warn me when it's connected to GPS or not? This is for the Garmin 65s and 66SR.

  9. The last Garmin unit that I got which was easy to remove AA batteries was the 60CSx. Every Garmin handheld unit I've got since is really difficult to remove AA batteries. I've tried using the tip of a pen or the flat end of a nail clipper to remove the batteries and over time it just damages the exterior of the batteries. It's not an issue for disposable AA batteries, but it's an issue for rechargeable AA batteries. So I guess I'm wondering what's a better way to remove the AA batteries?

    Thx!

Yes, I asked Garmin for status update. Then they asked me to send the video again. Then I sent again and asked about the ticket they supposed to have opened already. Then they replied, yes they have opened and it would be a question from development team. Haha. Snakes working at Garmin. For me it's part of "keeping the customer busy while we have no fix for the problem".

You can find (not very more) info in other forums as well. All Garmin Galileo/multiband units (65 & 66) seem to have the problem.

I hope links to other forums are fine here - it is how internet works:

Hmmm, now that you mention it, @Mineral2,  Sgt_Strider account was created in 2008 with their last visit in 2017, and absolutely 0 finds, hides, stats, etc. Absolutely no activity for >13 years. And, as you have discovered, @Sgt_Strider clearly understands modern Garmin equipment, so the questions we keep answering do seem a bit strange. If I didn't know any better, I might suspect this to be a duplicate 'trolling' account for another member.

You're making some really stupid and bizarre comments. I'm not active on this forum and now I want to get back into this hobby. Trolling? Wow. I think it's crazy that you have this much time to dig up old posts and then making crazy insinuations. If I'm not sure of something, I'm going to ask. How that constitute as trolling is beyond me.

I'm really confused by some of the questions being asked here. @Sgt_Strider, I've gone back through your old forum posts and at one point in 2015, you mentioned having owned and used a gpsMAP 62s.

Since you are already familiar with the modern era of Garmin GPS units, what exactly do you need reassurance on? The 65s (and even the 66sr) is going to function 90% identically to the 62s from an end user perspective. Sure, there are some new bells and whistles including Bluetooth and wifi capability and multi-GNSS, but with regard to the specific questions we have been going back and forth on in this thread... battery save mode and displaying certain data on the screen, it's identical to the 62s. Just buy your new device and play with it. Or stick with your 62s. Depending on what you're using it for, maybe there's no immediate need to update. Either way, I don't think this conversation needs to progress any further.

I don't have the 62s with me so how can I test this? Seems creepy for you to go back and dig up old posts and then insinuate something is wrong.
