  1. Etrex introduces their new "Retreiver" brand GPS/ATV combination. Strange Women, lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of Government
  2. I usually take my Basset Hound "Harley" on my cache hunts. He likes being out in the woods, and usually doesn't cause any problems. The only difficutly is that he tends to pick up ticks, but then again, so do I. Strange Women, lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of Government

  5. I love my Jeep, but I am not in favor of Drive Up caches. Getting out and searching is just part of the fun. Reddfrogg
  6. I know that caches sometimes go missing after being placed, but has anyone else run into a cache that was listed, but not yet placed? This cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=39364 was posted on 10/10/02, and I went to find it, hoping for a "first find". I had only a few minutes to look, and it was raining pretty steadily. I took a few minutes and an umbrella, and went searching, I found the coordinates without any trouble, but the cache was no where to be found. I searched as long as I could, getting very muddy and almost falling into a stream, by slipping on the muddy stream bank. I gave up, vowing to try again in a few days. When I returned on 10/13, the cache was there, and in almost plain sight. (It was behind a couple of trees,) I know I stepped right on the spot where the cache appeared later. Also in the logs, people searched for it on 10/11, and didn't find it. Apparently it was placed on 10/12. Anyone else run into such a thing? Reddfrogg
  7. The first thing I would do is raise the difficulty level of the cache. Reddfrogg
  8. Cache container: $ 1.00 Items for Cache: $15.00 Notebook and pencil: $1.98 Experience of getting lost in the woods, tripping over roots, getting poison ivy on sensitive areas, and ticks all over one's body: *Priceless* Reddfrogg
  9. I found some of those thingys recently at a REI outlet. I got some as exchange items. They called them "capsules", and I thought they were neat little inexpensive things to leave at caches. I just created a 6 part multicache, where I used M&M mini's containers as the micro caches. They are water tight, and will hold a 4" wide piece of paper, as well as a small pencil. Reddfrogg
  10. I live about equal distance between Gettysburg and Antietam Battlefields, and also live near Chambersburg, which was burned by Confederates during the Civil War. What did you have in mind?

  14. One of my caches in a public park was found by some non-cachers. They apparently read the information and signed the log, then left the cache sitting out in plain sight. I got an E-mail from them, asking about Geocaching. Fortunately, I just happened to check on the cache shortly after it had been left out. (before I got the e-mail) I was able to re-hide the cache before it was trashed by some vandals. Reddfrogg
  15. "Down here in the bible belt you can occasionally find Jesus in a cache. Or a variety of other religious tracts." How does Jesus breathe when he's in a cache? Reddfrogg
  16. Where have you been placing the caches? Are you making sure the caches are on public land? If they are in public places,, and you are not disturbing anything, I don't see why anyone would complain. Some people though live to complain. On the subject of the theft, there is not much one can do. Vandals are a fact of life. Just make sure if you replace the cache, that you hide it well. I found one of my caches sitting out in plain sight when I came to check on it. Apparently a non cacher found it, and didn't replace it.(at least they didn't trash the cache) Fortunately I found it and re-hid it before some vandal found it. Good luck with your future caches. Don't let a few idiots dissuade you. Reddfrogg
  17. If lightining is close enough to affect your GPS, it's time to get inside, or under cover. Who goes geocaching in a thunderstorm? Reddfrogg
  18. a small block pencil sharpener should be placed in there to keep the pencil sharp. I like finding things like unusual pins, and little gadget type items. You can find small jig saw puzzles too, about the size of pack of cards. Card games, trading cards, old coins, etc. Have fun, and remember to keep your cache restocked and check it ever so often to make sure it's not disturbed. Reddfrogg
  19. I would love to attend, but alas, I have to work that weekend. Well, have fun all, and take some pictures. Reddfrogg
  20. Recently I was going to check on one of my caches that is in a secluded spot in a local wetlands park. There are benches in the area of the cache. When my wife and I walked up to the cache, there was a couple sitting on the bench, who looked like they were trying to avoid attention.(this was around lunchtime on a weekday) As not to tip off the location, we walked on by. We waited a half hour, and went back, and they were still there. We had other things to do that day, so we came back the next day, and there on the bench was a used condom, with the wrapper nearby. I figure we almost interrupted someone's "afternoon delight". Reddfrogg
  21. Hi, I am fairly new too, just started last summer. I find the Garman 12 has a good mix of low price and good performance. I haven't used any of the Map GPS units, but I am not sure they would be much use for close up work. What really makes a GPS useful (as far as I am concerned) is how well it works within the last 1/10 of a mile as you are approaching the cache. Your mileage may vary. Reddfrogg
  22. Hello all. Well I got two caches hidden, and they seem well recieved. I don't mind toys themselves, just was tired of seeing the "happy meal" toys take over. The one cache is standard size, and can hold a lot of different items, the other is a small cache, and I asked that it be coins and cards only. Will see how things develop. I see I already have a few hits on my caches. Thanks for your comments. Reddfrogg
  23. I haven't been doing this very long, but I try to put a frog of some kind in each of my finds and my caches. Reddfrogg
  24. Hi, I am planning on hiding a few caches, and I was wondering how everyone felt about putting a request that certian items not be placed in the cache. I wanted to request that no "happy meal" toys be placed in the cache, because I have seen some caches that seemed to be nothing but those toys. Also I wanted to request that no candy or food items be left, as they attract insects and other animals, not to mention leaving the cache sticky. When I go geocaching, I try to bring along some item of nominal value, but has some personal significance to leave at the site. The items my wife and I placed in our planned cache are not expensive, but they were carefully chosen, and I don't want it filled up with toys that people didn't want. I don't want to sound like I am asking for only valuable items, or want to exclude children. Do you, the reader feel it's approprate to ask that such items please not be left in that particular cache? Thanks for your time. Reddfrogg Do you feel it's acceptable to request that certian items not
