  2. I am interested, just let me know how you want the payment. GEO.JOE
  3. Email the owner of the Trailway series 3 and see if he can help. Do you remember any of the names of previous cachers that found the ammo cache? If you do email them and ask what you found.
  4. Email the owner of Donner und Blitzen and ask if he has changed the cache to an ammo can. If he can not help you resolve your question check with the owner of the Trailway series 3 and see if he can help. Do you remember any of the names of previous cachers that found the ammo cache? If you do email them and ask what you found.
  5. The right boot is very specific to your foot. The best way to find the right boot is to go to a good outdoor store and have someone that is knowledgeable about boots measure your foot, i.e. length, width and volume, and assist you in finding the right type of boot for you. You can also go to the stores and try on all the available boots until you find one that is comfortable. Don't be embarrassed to walk around in them for a while. Take the type of socks you plan to wear with the boots to make sure there is room, use inclines or walk on a tread mill at the store to get a feel for how the boot will rub your Achilles or hurt the top of your foot or toes. Get a quality, name brand boot, i.e. Asolo, Columbia, La Sportiva, Lowa, Merrell, Montrail, Salomon, Tecnica or Vasque,. There are some great buys at Sierra Trading Post. You may get lucky and find a pair that fit well and be able to get them cheaper at Sierra Trading Post. As for suggestions on boots, my wife has a pair of Montrail Solitudes- all leather(not Gor-Tex), 5 years in May. They have held up well and with yearly treatments they stay waterproof. She is size 7 1/2 with a low volume foot. My sister has Asolo FSN ?? Gor-Tex - leather and fabric, Light weight, easy break in, and waterproof, 3 years no problems. She has a size 9 foot , medium to large volume. She is also very pleased with a pair of Merrell Winter Mocs-waterproof and insulated but below ankle. I have Salomon STL 7 - full leather backpacking boots, 3 years with lots of punishment and they have held up well. I hope this helps.
  6. Hopefully this will help: Sojourn Trekking Poles Stansport Phone number Is 1-800-421-6131 I assume that you lost the plastic tip cover? That happened to me the very first time I had my Black Diamond poles out. Somewhere in the mud and I didn't notice until I hit a rock. Just about everyone I know has lost several tips on all brands of poles, so I chose to just take the other tip cover off and I know I have a firm point that is not going to slip off or split in the cold when I really put some weight on it. Happy Caching
  7. I have found and removed:, used chap stick, pocket lint, hotel soap, ticket stubs, cash register receipts, candy, melted glue stick, busted water globe, a tick, and a 30-30 cartridge left by a hunter that found the cache Unique finds: a class project was to write poems/letters/songs and they placed all in a cache(great reading), shed snake skins in ziplocs and labeled, carved wooden fish, an animal jawbone(more than once), a "Get a Garmin or Get Lost" T-shirt, and a Tag from a Thong.
  8. Sorry to get a little OT but I keep hearing mention of plastic army men.... Does this mean that tiny plastic figurines are inappropriate for use as a signature item? (say altered in some small way to make them 'unique') "altered in some small way to make them 'unique' " That is the most important thing. If you are taking a common plastic figurine, i.e. plastic army man 100 pieces for $1.00, and tossing one in a cache- that is not very interesting. An army man attached to the Soldier's Prayer as a tribute to someone that is serving in the military is a totally different thing. Plastic figurines are not bad in and of themselves, but too much of the mundane is no longer enjoyable to find. However, if you do something to make them "unique" they may become highly sought after trade items. Fairy Flirt and myself laugh with each other because of the silly little figurines that we are drawn to. We have collected a hand painted lead civil war soldier, a smiling pig, A local's signature "homie" and a Little guy in Lederhosen. Just tonight my sister had a basket of stuff she cleaned from a desk drawer that she was going to throw away. I found a 1/2 inch tall yellow chick, it reminds me of Chicken Little. When I pulled it out my sister thought I was nuts but when I held it up in front of my wife she said, with a pleasant laugh "Oh, how cute, that would be perfect for a micro." My sister sighed. Make them unique to you and place them with pride!!
  9. Silly Putty has never been passed up by my nieces or nephew, also anything that lights up, card games, things that glow in the dark, Tops/spinners, and parachute men. Some trades are completely unexpected: if there is anything that is novel, i.e. Round TUIT, foreign coin, taco bell coupon, or bug encased in plastic, they are just as likely to be taken as the best toy. I have been shocked by some trades: My nephew made a nice key chain collection out of 2 days of trades. He is also just as likely to trade for something he thinks his mom or dad will like, i.e. ring/necklace, measuring tape. My 7 year old niece is just as likely to trade for the pencil her sister put in as she is to trade from anything else. The good thing about kids is they can find treasure in just about everything. As long as there is a variety and the cache is dry the kids have struck gold. Happy Caching GEO.JOE
  10. We have had too many go missing in Shawnee National Forest, IL for it to be a coincidence. Here is the entire story from where I posted on a local forum: "I have had three caches go missing in the last few weeks; Sand Cave (GCK82Y), Crow Knob (GCKT02) and Buffalo Rock (GCM3ZB). They are not in high traffic areas or near any homes where kids would play and find them. I thought that Buffalo Rock and Crow knob could have been stumbled across by hunters, however, Sand Cave was hidden very well in the boulders, requiring two cachers to hunt for an hour each to find the cache. Therefore I am afraid someone has purposefully gone after these caches to steal them. I did not replace Crow Knob or Sand Cave caches after I discovered Sand Cave was gone. I am going to post a question on my cache pages asking if someone is purposefully taking my caches, If they have a problem with me or a problem with where I place my caches. I also wanted to post the questions here in case someone that is watching the forum knows anything about the caches and would please contact me so we can get any problems resolved. Myotis has had about 8 caches taken; (GC2C4C), (GCA460), (GC36BF), (GC230C), (GC2308), (GC230D), he has to continually replace ET Rock(GC2309) and Burden Falls(GC18A9) was taken several times before he archived it. RAYJAY also had a cache at Burden Fall(GCKER9) go missing recently and another at Jackson Falls(GCKERF). Tunnel Cache(GC29E7) near Jackson Falls was also taken. Aquasleuth has had 6 other caches disappear this year;(GC3309), (GC330A), (GC3071), (GC3079), (GC3077), (GC3081). Lewy had his Cedar Creek(GCK1QC) cache taken which is in the same general area as my Buffalo Rock Cache and Dreicat had one taken from Near One Horse Gap(GCH6ZH). Happy (not so much right now!!!) Caching GEO.JOE" I have not been contacted by anyone yet but I hope the person responsible would contact me so we could try to understand each other.
  11. I found this interesting after I posted SBA note on the 16th. November 7 by xxxxxxxxx (983 found) This cache is "no more". The lightpost has no collar. I found half of a collar down in the planter island toward the highway. Found no cache remains in the area at all. Before this cache is gone forever I am changing my log to a find. [This entry was edited by xxxxxxx on Thursday, December 16, 2004 at 5:14:06 PM.] [view this log on a separate page] November 5 by xxxxxxx (438 found) Looters got here 1st!! It is GONE! Just as xxxxxx did, I too am claiming this as a "found" since I know that I was at the cache site. I am not a "numbers" cacher however I do like to count the ones that I locate(even though this one was gone). [This entry was edited by xxxxxxx on Thursday, December 16, 2004 at 5:32:16 PM.] I have a new moto: I like to count the ones that I locate(even though it's gone)!!!
  12. I had this happen on one of my caches. I knew there were other Native American rock paintings near a painting of a buffalo, but I had no information on their location. I searched the area 3 times and had never found the paintings, but the first cachers to hunt for the cache found 2 of the 7 other paintings.
  13. All you need is the winning one! And I got that one
  14. I think this is a great idea for a series of caches. I have also planned on placing a haunted series of caches. I have a cache already placed at one location with haunted stories( but no mention of the hauntings on the cache page) but I have not began that series yet. I had thought about telling half or highlights of the story on the cache page to get everyone interested then the remainder of the story would be in the cache so that everyone would be at the spot to experience the chills. I really like the idea of having others write haunted stories and use them as trade items. You could also request that they provide coordinates with the story so that others could go visit the area of the story. Some of my draw backs are the hours of operations of a few cemeteries because I was going to make night caches out of mine. Several of the areas are neat during the day by the effect is much better at night. GEO.JOE
  15. I just paypalled for 4 chances. This is another example of the great person you are! Thanks for all the nice things you do. My confirmation did not have my note to you, so just in case my Email is: littljo1@paducah.com
  16. It is items like this statue that make me hope that virtuals are never done away with. The purpose of this cache should be experiencing the statue and reflecting on the purpose of the statue. I feel that coming to this statue to then have to hunt down a soggy log in a film can would detract form the experience. Virtuals allow for a different type of experience and cachers approach them in a different frame of mind. When I approach a virtual I am on the hunt for knowledge and I get the chance to read the plaques and inscriptions at my leisure. While hunting a virtual I am much more relaxed. Many times I get to sit on a bench next to the statue/fountain/monument and read the information, talk about the experience with those around me and watch other's reactions to the virtual. If the statue is part of a multi it is not the final destination/goal of the hunt and many people will rush off to find the next stage without fully experiencing the statue. I know, I have done this. There is an internal drive(voice) that makes me want to rush to get the cache completed. I never know how long that final stage will take to finish and I cut myself short at the statue to make sure I have enough time to find the cache. As soon as I have the answer to send the hider I am done and I know exactly how much time I have to do whatever I want to do next. Also, if a Micro is involved the cacher has to be stealthy and inconspicuous in a public area, which is not enjoyable to me. I prefer to visit virtuals in high traffic areas than to try to find a hidden micro. One of my most enjoyable days of caching was in Washington, DC wondering from one virtual to the next. My vote is to make this statue a virtual because sometimes there are things that are more important to experience than finding a vessel with a slip of paper to sign. GEO.JOE
  17. "What is Geocaching? Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. " The FAQs do not just imply that trading is optional they state that it is optional. As others have said over time caches will degrade and others that enjoy to trade need more cachers like you that want to see new and interesting swag in the caches, but it is not fair for you to say that those that do not change out the swag are robbing everyone of an experience. TNLN is a lot better than a cacher near me that takes every thing nice and leaves motel soap and used golf balls. Actual quotes: Here is one of their first finds after I pointed the undesirability of their trades and problems with scented items like soap. "took pin left golf ball & bar of soap (PLEASE DON"T LEAVE SCENTED THINGS IN CACHES!!!) Great cache, Thanks a lot" "Took play-doh, light stick, and shell (will try and make it a tb) & bag in film canister Left golf ball and Z100 FM keychain signed log book We found two bags and filled them with garbage and used the CITO bag in film canister and filled it with garbage also. Considering the amount of trash we hauled out, we left WAY more behind. mabye someone should do a CITO event here" "took bats, bubbles, ball, and beads left barbed wire and beat up penny soda machine nearby has been stolen from. dollar bill opening is melted and cut" The last few TNLN thanks for the cache logs are a definite improvement. I wish everyone that finds a cache before me would take something crappy and leave something nice. Then every cache would be the treasure I hope it will be. I do my best to leave a cache in better shape than I found it. This may include any thing from taking out moldy/broken/rusted items to replacing a cache box and all new swag. In more cases than not I will take nothing and leave something. Very few of my finds are TNLN unless there was a problem with a leaky cache or the cache being muggled. This is a wonderful game due to the diversity of cache locations, difficulty of cache hides and terrain, and spectrum of different people playing the game. With the multitude of variations within the game this allows everyone to play the type of game they enjoy. As quoted above: "a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards." Rewards to others are more than trinkets left in the cache by precious cachers and the cache owner. Fairy Flirt and I enjoy the scenic/historic locations and nice hikes in new locations. We prefer two caches in great locations a day over a dozen easy cache in mediocre locations. When we have our nieces we hunt the caches near playgrounds-they enjoy the hunt but the after-hunt fun on a new playground is the prize for them. My nephew wants a place he can climb on some rocks. The kids enjoy trading items, Fairy Flirt enjoys reading and writing in the cache log, and I enjoy telling the story on line, many times I forget to mention what we left at the cache but most everyone around here knows that if they find one on my Elvis coins or other signature items I have beaten them to the cache. Techno Team I appreciate your passion for th game you like to play and I highly encourage you to do all you can to play the game you enjoy. By leaving fresh swag you will be making the find for the next cacher very special. If you are going after a cache where the last 3 cachers TNLNSL don't read their logs, instead look for the trade items from the 4th, 5th, and 6th cacher ago. You can also watch the caches for travel bugs or signature items and hunt those. As I mentioned earlier there are many ways to play and enjoy geocaching. Just do your best to enjoy your new hobby. Happy caching. GEO.JOE
  18. Fly46 I just created a new Signature item this past weekend and two are on their way to you. There is a chance I will be coming through Nashville January 18, 2005. Your cache will be a must find. Happy Caching. GEO.JOE
  19. Cedar Creek by Lewy inspired me to explore the area along Cedar Creek 2 more times and place 2 caches in the area. I will be back to the area I have been told of two waterfalls and there is Indian rock art in the area to find. One Horse Gap is another area I had never heard of before geocaching that I have returned to once, I have not made it back for a camping trip but it is still in the plans. Many of the areas I have cached are places that I have visited at least once a year for the past 20 years. However, this year I have explored new parts of the sites that I never knew existed. Most of my exploring has been a result of me looking for new places to place caches. As a result I have discovered the largest sandstone cave in North America Sand Cave historical sites, underground railroad sites, Native American Rock Art, the best places to watch wildlife (even fox in the local cemetery) and some of the best places to hike in the country. I still have 4 places I have cached that I said I will go back to that I plan to explore further-and I will. So much to see, So little time!
  20. Wow! this is not a stat that I wanted to win, but I have 8 LTF's. Two were my fault - one was on private property, I notified the owner with the person to seek permission from but they chose to archive it. One was due to the cache needing maintenance so the owner archived it. Four LTF's were owned by the same person. I still feel guilty- no one was around for miles on two of them. On a third I had just replace the cache box and swag. I had spoken to the other family at the natural bridge because the father was interested in my Garmin RINO. He was familiar with geocaching and thought it was neat that a cache was hidden in the area(I don't think they took It but I may be responsible ).
