  1. The meridian does not have the same kind of file structure. You can save maps to sd card and activate them like the Explorist but as far as the waypoints tracks etc go they are just saved into one place. You do not have the different folders and the same options like the Explorist have. The Explorist is way, way better in this regard.
  2. I have the CA/NV card. I really like it. It is the best of both worlds. The streets of City Nav which are very accurate combined with a very highly detailed topo map. The topo is much more detailed than the Topo 2008, BUT there are some trails missing from the 24k topo that are on the Topo 2008 for some reason. I have a profile set on my Oregon with Topo 2008 chosen for those times when a trail might be missing but for the rest of the time I use the CA/NV card, both for routing the streets and hiking the back country. I also have City Nav Nt on my Oregon but rarely ever look at anymore.
  3. Yep, I'm seeing the same. Bummer. The good news is no more freeze ups! Woo Hoo!
  4. Here is the LINK Edit: That link just talk about the new app.
  5. I use one from Zagg. I took the Colorado version and modified it to fit. The map is a tad bit more difficult to drag around with precision, but other than that it is great. I noticed no decrease in brightness and the touch screen seems just as sensitive as before. I am very happy with it.
  6. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to download the file. I must be missing somthing simple.
  7. I don't have a Colorado anymore but it goes something like this: Setup>Map>I think now you have to press the options button and then advanced setup (or something like that)>zoom levels>Land Cover>Off, I think this will do you. I hope that I got this close for you. I turned in my Colorado for an Oregon a while back and the Oregon is a little different getting to the same option. I have different profiles setup, one of them has the land cover turned off for those times when I need to see the screen better.
  8. Mine turned to a brick twice after deleting my gpx file of caches. I had to do the rgn. install too to fix it both times. The problem was that if I download a gpx file of caches with the same name as the one on the gps it did not seem to replace it. It would still show my found caches even though they had been removed from the new file. So I thought I would delete the gpx diconnect and turn it on then re-load the new file. But it bricked after deleting the gpx file. This happenned twice. So yesterday I uploaded a new gpx of caches after a day of caching but changed the name and then deleted the other file before disconnecting from the PC. That worked and the found caches were gone this time.
  9. THIS is what I had to do to get one of my Mapsend programs to work on my Vista machine. I don't remember now if it was Topo or DirectRoute.
  10. But...but I've just switched over from the Colorado to the Oregon! Will there be no end to these troubles? God damnit Garmin! Ive had four Colorado's and am about to get my fourth Oregon. I sure hope this is the last Garmin that I need for awhile.
  11. Do you know why Garmin asked you to return the unit for exchange/repair rather then try any g-o-cashers-like simple clearing schemes first? I don't think there is a way to do a reset or anything else if the unit will not power up. When I told them that my Oregon would not turn on or go into mass storage mode when plugging into my PC they immediately said that I would need to send it in. They gave me no other options.
  12. Thats an interesting point has anyone had trouble with the 400 series? do the premanent failures only happen on the 300s. I wonder if the memory structure is a little different due to the preloaded maps...just a random thought. My other Oregon that also quit working with memory errors was also a 300.
  13. I don't know if it makes a difference or not but mine is a 300 that I sent back with the memory errors.
  14. I had read that the Colorado one has to be trimmed down by 1mm to fit correctly. And they said that the Oregon works just as well with the screen protector on it. I ordered a Colorado screen protector for my Oregon. I will just trim it down as needed.
  15. I had over 400 mb's of free space left on internal memory when I got my Memory Full mesages. I had only one route built when I got the Route Memory Full mesages. I only had two wayoints loaded when I got the Waypoint Memory Full mesages. Sounds like processor does not have enough memory?
  16. The tech that I spoke to said that I should not load any maps into internal memory. He said that it is recomended to use sd cards for maps. This is somewhat disapointing to me. I use the 24K topo map that is preloaded on sd card. I should be able to use the built in memory for other maps like City Nav etc. and switch as needed. NOT switch cards.
  17. Hopefully the next firmware will fix this. After having two Oregon's in a row that quit working after displaying memory full mesages, I am kind of gun shy now with the new unit on the way to me.
  18. Mine did the same thing. With 400mb of free internal memory I got Memory Full messages, Waypoint Memory Full, and Routing Memory Full messages yesterday. I only had one route loaded, two waypoints loaded and one gpx file of 1800 caches at 8.1 mb. After coming home last night and uploading my found caches to the GC.com field notes page I unplugged it from the pc and went to turn the Oregon back on and then it happened... screen fade out. It will not turn back on. Nor will it go into mass storage mode. I called Garmin today and they were very interested in it. They said to ship it back to them because they wanted to get their hands on the unit and see for themselves what was going on with it. They are going to send me a new unit. I have to say that they were very nice and seemed eager to get their hands on mine. The sad part is that this happened to my last Oregon too. I took that one back to REI and exchanged it for this new one.
  19. THIS explains it pretty simply as far as uploading to GC.com. And HERE is a GSAK macro that will get them into GASK.
  20. It's a great unit for geocaching. They are very accurate but sometimes suffer from the "slingshot" effect. When I used to cache with my Meridian I would stop and pause for a second or two between 50 and 100 feet from the cache. All was good then. If you don't do that and you are moving along pretty good heading toward a cache you will all of a sudden find your self passing the cache by a hundred feet or so. This is the slingshot as it takes the unit a few seconds to catch up sometimes. So a quick pause when nearing the cache is sometimes necessary. Other than that the gold is a very good unit and probably the most popular gps out there at one time.
  21. I have to say that my Oregon seems to be pretty darn accurate. The four Colorado units that I owned were not however. Enough was enough with Colorado. I am very pleased with the accuracy of my Oregon.
  22. The Explorist line will only use the Topo 3D for topo maps. The older topo's are said to be incompatible.
  23. I used to use dry silicon spray on my Colorado's. It seemed to work pretty well.
