  1. Hi Folks, I'm looking into buying a used Garmin Quest and I forgot that it wasn't until recently that Garmin cared enough about Mac users to make their equipment/software compatible with the Mac OS. Does anyone know if the compatibility is retrograde? In other words, will an older Garmin unit be able to use current software that is compatible? I'm looking for a GPS unit that would be good for motorcycling/bicycling, any recommendations? I know about the Quest, what don't I know about? Thanks a lot for the help!
  2. Thanks for all of the responses. I actually did quite a bit of caching back in 2003-2004, but I've been out of it since then. I found that most of the caches I was looking for were pretty well hidden, often leading me to resort to the added clues. I'm doing some experimentation with the GPS now where I would like to move with a GPS device without the device being able to track my movement; in other words, movement that is so slow that despite being 'hooked up' technologically, I am untrackable, technologically. It sounds ironic, probably, but that's part of the point - I am developing a performance art piece based on this idea. I hope to present it in Spain this spring. If anyone can give me some more advice I'd appreciate it. Is the electronic compass reliant upon satellite tracking, or does it indicate movement based upon the last location that the device was tracked? (if that makes sense) Thanks for the help!
  3. Hi Folks It's been a while since I've geocached but when I do I use an old Gecko. As I recall, the Gecko had a hell of a time giving me directions once I got within about 15' of the cache. I thought that was due to gov't imposed limitations on resolution for the general public, but maybe it's the Gecko? Maybe it was due to my stopping as I scanned the area to find the cache? It seemed that the unit (or the system) was unable to locate me once I stopped, too. Anyway, do today's units have these limitaions? Thanks for your help.
  4. Up to this point I've been using a Gecko, so pretty simple GPSing - meaning no maps. When I was investigating maps last year I discovered that Nat'l Geographic, for instance, is written almost entirely for PC. What's available for the Mac? On the hardware side, are there GPS devices with USB instead of serial? I truly am a novice at this so any guidance is appreciated much.
  5. Hi Folks I did a search on this topic and found the last exchange to have taken place back in '03. Have there been any software developments since then to allow Mac users easier download/upload?
  6. Not sure I follow your idea, realmofmyst, but I'm glad you appreciate what I'm doing. I didn't realize how out-of-date I was in this forum. I'm now back home in San Jose - I arrived two weeks ago. The trip across Canada and northern US was so much fun. Of course there were boring times, too, like droning on I-90 at 80 mph for hours on end. I had a great time in St. Louis, Wyoming, Montana, and more, though. I'm still logging the caches I found along the way, 24 in all I believe. voltaire
  7. Just a quick update: I'm still here, in Maine, stuck cause I've been working on my bike. I've had to rebuild the top end(s) due to a bad part installation. I had intended to head out towards Michigan almost two weeks ago, but I ran into mechanical problems. Fortunately I was staying with my sister when the proverbial fan was splattered. I'm hoping to get the bike running today, allowing me to leave tomorrow. I've visited two sites up here in Maine. I highly recommend One For The Loafers - strenuous summertime hike, but the view is a payoff. I'm hoping the ride back to the west coast is a smooth, trouble-free one. voltaire

  15. What do you know! Somebody submitted "Swamp Thing" as a site and I've been looking around for who it was. It's in up state NY, hid by the Tree Frogs. At least that's the one I thought was submitted. I see that you have one yourself - did you suggest your to me? I'm wondering if in my numerous searches for sites I dug up Tree Frog's when I was intending to find yours. I've been sitting in the library for hours now, trying to catch up on things - I gotta get out of here, so I'll be incommunicado for a while. (no internet at my sister's place). voltaire Jack
  16. I'm in Ridgewood for a day, maybe till tomorrow late morning. v
  17. Yeah, I am impressed by the ammo cans. Same goes for those who found it at midnight - wackos! Fatboy Slim says that there's a contingent of Austin area cachers that only search at night - wackos! ;-) I'm in New Jersey now, haning out at my sister's place for a day. It's raining. I hope to catch a cache in this area - I've got one on my list. voltaire
  18. Hey Snoogans You crazy-man, you! Yeah, Fatboy Slim helped me find the cache. I must say that I was intimidated by your description, and then, when we pulled up on our bikes, there was this scary-big rattlesnake sittting the closest tree, waiting to greet us. I've never been that close to a venomous snake without the safety of glass! It took us an hour of slogging through the bogg to finally find the cache. It was a dirty affair, but we are better for the wear. Unfortunately, we both forgot to take some cache goodies, so we didn't take any of the generous prizes inside of the amazingly dry ammo box. Good thing it was tied down, by the way. Thanks for the adventure, Snoogans! Now it's off to the Ozarks in search of Hawksbill Crag. voltaire
  19. Geesh! There are so many places to check out. At this point I'm hanging in Austin, trying to catch up on editing images, contacting people, etc. I'' be up in New England around the 10th...anyone have a floor for me to crash on? voltaire
  20. Hey Marc G. Yeah, I could spent more time in Zion - I didn't make it up into the Temple, for instance. But the climb up to, and the view from, Angel's Landing will never be forgotten. Unfortunately, I missed the coordinates you provided above - how did I overlook them??. One more reason to go back :-) I've got a day here in Austin and then on to Houston. Yeeehaww! Jack
  21. Hi Folks Just an update: I'm on the road now for six days, right now hanging out at Java Joe's in Santa Fe, just before heading into Texas for my first sublime site sighting. I couldn't help stopping in at Zion Nt'l Park and Monument Valley on the way - hope you can check these places out if you haven't. Mostly the weather has been good, ranging from hot to very hot, but I have run into some thunderstorms here in New Mexico - the accompanying wind is havoc for me on my motorcycle. That's it for now - I can't wait to see the Texas sites. voltaire
