  1. Well tell them to get a life. All but everyone who uses the expression on these forums use it as an abbreviation of American. Brits, Yanks, Limeys, Merkins, who cares. Go find plastic boxes in the woods and stop being so bloo dy sensitive. Having been amused by the fuss this caused I was idly browsing the relevant page on dear old Wikipedia and I was "shocked" to discover what I have been eating all these years. If ever I feel like a meat/vegetable based snack in a pastry case I surely wont be able to ask for a couple of Pasties any more
  2. Couldn't a reviewer help you? I'm sure I read somewhere that they had "magical" powers to be able to see archived caches.
  3. Looks interesting, but does anyone know how to produce GeoTiff images from Memory Map?
  4. Thanks to mandarin who PM'd me I now know what one definition of "merkin" means (this link isn't offensive but it does discuss adult matters in a mature way). I would not have known this had it not been for the editing of the OP. I had always thought it meant (From here) However, even so, I do question whether it was necessary to censor this thread just because a couple of overly sensitive (IMHO) Americans were "offended". It seems to me that they need to grow a thicker skin. I too dislike being described as a "Limey" but I don't make a fuss about it, I just give a mental shrug and get on with my life. Maybe I should report every little thing that offends me <shrug> - but there again maybe I'll just get on with life.
  5. Well I've re-read the original post and considering the unfortunate circumstances the OP finds himself in I consider it a very polite and courteous message, hardly in need of criticism, implied or explicit. I assume you are objecting to the term "merkin" as that's the word you edited in your quote. To my way of thinking it is a light hearted play on the word "American" and is in no way discourteous. I can't imagine any Americans being overly upset about the word (or am I missing something?). It seems to me that if it is now considered as offensive then there are some very precious people reading this forum these days and perhaps they should get themselves some tougher skin. To take it to the next step, are we still allowed to call people from the USA "Yanks"?
  6. Sorry, all this talk of lots of rules got my goat. I'll go and chill now.
  7. We're actually trying to simplify the event guidelines by trying to do away with unnecessary rules. We? Since when have you been setting the rules? I thought that was Groundspeak's job, or at least the local reviewers I thought I was discussing things. You want lots of rules, I want it simple. To me an event seems to be an opportunity for people to get together and have fun. You don't need lots of rules and regulations just to meet people. Anyway, why should I ignore this thread just because we seem to disagree? Seems like I'm only welcome if I agree with you. Yes, post an event and wait for people to turn up. That way you have got all the freedom you want. Nobody need get upset, why should they? It's just a game after all. Why impose all sorts of rules and regulations when we're talking about consenting adults socialising? I don't suppose your middle name is Nelson?
  8. What angst? Questions, questions, questions. Should we do this, mustn't we do that, this should be allowed, this shouldn't be allowed. Rules, rules, rules. I can't be arsed to be honest. I'm just a simple soul and I just want a simple life.
  9. Give me a box to find anyday. With a box you know where you are. I've never been to an event and if there's so much angst about them I don't know that I want to.
  10. (My emphases) It's not as clear as the PQ licence, but it may be that Groundspeak consider themselves protected by this clause. As it says, if you have any questions... Wow! So I can print off a copy of the cache page for myself, but I can't let any one else see it!
  11. Yes, me. As I said earlier: But I repeat my (hopefully) civil question, wouldn't a better approach would be to suspend the posting rights of those people (that person?) who e-mailed the abuse rather than closing the whole thread? After all, the thread remains visible along with links to people's profiles so any other plonker can repeat the exercise if they really want to. And no, I won't be writing to Groundspeak over your decision. This is NOT a criticism of your action, rather a mild query as to a possible alternative approach.
  12. A very useful looking site Graculus, thanks for setting it up. Your comment (above) raises one question in my mind. If I set up a personal website, which possibly might have links to Geocaching related businesses, do I need Groundspeak's permission to do so? Or do I need permission from them to mention it here? Thanks.
  13. I too was mystified by the closure of the other thread. I understand and fully support sanctions being taken against people who use the site's facilities to abuse others but I fail to see how closing a perfectly reasonable thread achieves anything. After all, no abuse was posted on the forum and all this action does is to inconvenience all the people who had joined in the debate. Surely the correct approach would be to suspend the posting rights of those people (that person?) who e-mailed the abuse.
  14. Do you know, you could be onto something here! Host camping events on a camping website, pub events on a drinking website and use geocaching.com as a listing site for people wanting to find hidden containers.
  15. Sorry if I was guilty of derailing the original thread. As I see it, all camping events are open to all if you are prepared to pay to go on site. I'm sure site owners don't mind if you don't actually pitch a tent! So it all boils down to whether or not you are prepared to pay an admission fee. I'm all for applying common sense when it comes to reviewing such situations.
  16. Why not just allow the reviewers to exercise some locally based common sense? They are well placed to know if a location is "commercial" and is touting for business and when it happens to be a convenient meeting place for all concerned but charges a small admission fee. It's not as if campsites have been set up to profit from Geocaching, neither is it likely that event organisers choose a particular campsite to ensure they make a profit from us. I sometimes think this commercial business has gone too far and we ought to just be allowed to choose or ignore caches with a possible commercial element as we wish. After all, who is Geocaching actually for? The people who play the game or those who think they have a God given right to run it?
  17. Because Geocaching was invented by Americans and is intended to be an international game. It uses an Internationally recognised system.
  18. So? Once the coin was given to him by the shop it became his property and he could do with it what he wanted to. I'm assuming it wasn't one taken from a cache though...........
  19. Well I'm glad the "authorities" allowed you to publish your event in the end. It looked a lot of fun and you seemed to get good weather as a bonus. It shows that an event doesn't HAVE to be a group of people having a drink and a chat (not that there's anything wrong with that!).
  20. As you can already search for caches by co-ordinates and postcode why do we need this extra classification. Now what would be REALLY useful is the ability to search by town like you can do in Google maps etc.
  21. I've been using it for a month or more, ever since it was first mentioned on the American forum (am I allowed to look there ) and I find it excellent. I was impressed how quickly Groundspeak incorporated it on their cache pages.
  22. I find it interesting to see there are essentially two types of answer to this thread: a.) Geocaching has changed and not necessarily for the better b.) Geocaching is just great as it is It is surely significant that the majority choosing a.) are experienced cachers who know what things were like a few years ago, while those choosing b.) are newcomers like me who have no knowledge of what Geocaching used to be like. As I never experienced caching before this year I obviously cannot comment.
  23. I can't see the cache or the log mentioned. It says the cache hasn't been published As for your general point, why do "old timers" keep harking back to the good old days of geocaching when everything was much better. Us newcomers are entitled to play the game as it is now too.
  24. While out walking I've noticed that the quality of blackberries is very poor this year. While there seems to be plenty around they are smaller than usual and definitely not as sweet as usual. Has anyone else found this?
