I've mentioned elsewhere that sometimes your best friend is the backspace key.
This is one of those times.
Greg, this is called irony and it's a form of humour we enjoy in LimeyLand. It is harmless whimsy and certainly does not call for anything untoward, certainly not a backspace key.

From what little I've seen of mtn-man I think he does a good job of forum mod, I think we'll be in good hands there. Miss Jenn - well as an employee of Groundspeak I guess we'll get the official Groundspeak line so we'll know where we stand.
I may be unpopular when I say this but I think whatever happens it will be better than the shambles we've had for the last few months. I applaud mandarin and deceangi for their efforts and for their commitment, it takes someone special to give the commitment they have shown here. But have they done a good job? I would have to say no, they just didn't seem to have the necessary skills and the forum was the worse for it.
I would repeat that I admire them for trying but I am just commenting on the results.

Could the mod responsible for closing one old, innocuous, thread while leaving the others open please explain the thinking?
If he feels it inappropriate to bump such an old thread because of its age (that was the implication), then why not close ALL such threads so they cannot be bumped?

If any Geocachers are thinking of getting a dog why not visit your local Dog Rescue centre. There are always lots of lovely dogs desperately looking for good homes.
Mind you, I do wonder how many people looking for a new dog in the UK would think of looking in an American "GPS Garage Sale" forum.

Eek! I understand Mandarin has been asked to move this thread, rather than making the decision herself.
I would have thought that she had enough experience by now to be trusted to moderate the UK forum in her own inimitable fashion. I assumed Groundspeak "employed" and trusted local moderators to run "their" forums in the way they felt best. Obviously there are those who know better.
As has been said, this was developed to support UK cachers using an essentially UK software product and includes UK specific features. Why publicise it in a forum where the vast majority of contributors are non-UK based?
Madness.

It might be better for fellow geocachers to informally "adopt" a cache by continuing to maintain it on behalf of the deceased friend, rather than formally adopting it.
Sounds like an excellent solution. However would Groundspeak allow it? They require a cacher to be "active" and to log in from time to time in order to keep the caches listed.

If a cache is worth doing it's worth providing a substantial log. If it's a lame cache in a lame location it deserves what it gets.

The information we are talking about here is public information anyway. If you have the coordinates of the cache it will take less than 5 minutes to find contact information for the land owner (from government websites). If the cacher wants to he can find this information on his own so why does it need to be on the cache page. I have cached on private land where the owners name was not listed. I found the owners name and # and called them letting them know I was going to be there and at what time (It was hunting season and I didnt want to get shot). The land owner told that time will be fine and thanked me for calling. It took less than 5 minutes to get the info.

You are not living anywhere near here..........Besides - if it is that easy - why list on the page?
I agree with StarBrand. There are a very few places where it is that easy. For most of the country (USA) it is still very time consuming to find out who owns a particular parcel of land. I wish it were that easy.
And even where it is easy to find a "name" it's often misleading. The listing may say it's owned by 'so and so' but a bit more research reveals 'so and so' is the name listed as the owner of 'X company' which is a subsidiary company for 'Y company' which is held by this 'limited such-and-such' that is actually part of this 'other company' which is owned in part by a holding company that manages properties for the actual owner. Good luck with that.
And the USA isn't Geocaching, it's a worldwide sport so don't assume that what works in one country works everywhere.
It all boils down to one reviewer making one interpretation of the guidelines and another reviewer making a different interpretation. If I were the landowner and I'd given permission for someone to place a cache on my land I don't think I would want my details published. Groundspeak, as the listing site, should honour my wishes. It's my land to do with as I want, not theirs.

It was funny, it gave us a laugh, didn't seem like anyone was hurt by it ... imitation being the finest form of flattery and all that!
For what it is worth, I think three days would have made them both sit up and be good boys again.
Since you vouched for him I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and reduce it to a 3 day restriction, as long as he doesn't put his foot in it.
Since starting the thread I've stayed out of the discussion for a while however I do have an opinion on this matter.
Jeremy, as our esteemed owner and leader don't you think you overreacted just a tad? From what I can see Simply Paul borrowed your avatar to play a harmless joke on one or two people in this forum. Everyone targeted (and others) seemed to have a chuckle. No hamsters were injured
As someone in the public eye, shouldn't you be prepared for people to occasionally poke fun at you? Surely it goes with the territory?

I agree too. Since when has it been appropriate to give answers to puzzle caches in the forums? Going on recent precedent the thread should be closed immediately.

If you wish to post in a extremely lightly moderated forum, then the GAGB Forum would be ideal.
So the GAGB forum is Lightly moderated and this GSP forum is not?
All I was trying to ascertain is why no warning was given. You yourself have said that a warning can be given
if this is possible and appropriate.In this case of course it was possible. No obscenities or other inappropriate language were being used, the argument was being conducted in a civilised way, even if it was developing into a personal dispute. no swearing or similar was involved.

The reason I pose the question is from reading the Muggle This ! thread. Although interesting I agree that is seemed to breach the guideline quoted by mandarin. My concern is at the immediate closure of the thread. Looking at the forum guidelines it says:
We (Groundspeak, Groundspeak’s staff, and the volunteer moderators) reserve the right to edit/remove inappropriate messages, or to lock a discussion thread. Before taking any of these actions, a moderator will attempt to steer the discussion back to the topic, if this is possible and appropriate.(my emphasis)
I can't see any attempt to steer the discussion back on track, just the sudden closure of the thread. This is not the first time this has happened recently either.
I stress that I agree with mandarin (the forum moderator) that the discussion seemed to breach a guideline so needed some action taking. Surely a warning would have been in order before cutting the discussion short.

As an alternative to YHA, have you considered a cheap Travelodge? They have some cheap deals on at the moment, some as low as £19, which should be of interest to geocachers visiting other parts of the country.

Exactly the same for me and I'm in Hampshire although my ISP is in Surrey so I don't know where Lambeth comes into it. A touch of the "Chocolate Teapots" methinks.

As the IP searching routine returns caches near the ISP's location rather than a user's I fail to see what the point is. It seems a waste of time to me - but there again I might be missing something obvious.

It's completely pointless. My ISP is in Sheffield.... I'm in Devon. I never *ever* look at the home page anyway, so I don't care anyway.
I agree, a total waste of time. I just hope they didn't spend long implementing it.
