  1. Thanks, JoeFrog. I haven't laughed aloud that hard for a long time. . . . . still laughing . . . . Piratess
  2. I think I discovered what would be my worst nightmare when I was out geocaching the other day. I was in an Indiana state park, where the privies are the deep-hole-in-the-ground kind. As I sat down, the awful thought came to me: "What if my GPS device falls out of my pocket and into this hole?" Piratess
  3. What's your personal opinion? Do you like "She-Pirate" better? Piratess
  4. Thanks, but geneology isn't my thing. I'm just surrounded by cemeteries! Piratess
  5. I'm in Indiana at the moment and the Covered Bridge Festival just ended. It draws more than 2,000,000 people each year, lasts for TEN days, and this area has one of the largest concentrations of covered bridges in the country! I think that there are around 30. There is a cache at nearly every one of them, so I will soon have to start looking for those. As you might imagine, covered bridges are absolutely stunning this time of year, as it is peak autumn, leaf-changing season here. I like the cemetery idea and will consider that. Might as well hide something, if I'm going to find them. Piratess
  6. I am losing sleep by reading and enjoying the variety, ambiance, and education of the forums until all hours of the morning! Geography and culture are so apparent in the posts, caches, and photos. Saturday I hid my first cache very near my home. Just now I went to the cache page and, since I live in such a rural area, clicked on "nearby placenames" to see what in the world might be noted. Perhaps I should have made this a Halloween cache instead of a Christmas one because TWENTY-TWO of the first twenty-five placenames are cemeteries!! Thirty-one of the total fifty-four are cemeteries! LOL This area of rural Tennessee has small family plots way back in the woods, cemeteries with every little church, and many lots with civil war dead. What a contrast to your high deserts, urban caches, and mountaintops. (If you want to check it out, it is GCH327.) I thought this was interesting. Now I will have to begin a quest to find all of these places, and maybe even stash a cache or two. Piratess
  7. Jamie, I was not clear with my post. I meant that I was surprised that no one in the forum had asked you what you were doing out there! Am I the only curious one on here?? Piratess
  8. quote:Originally posted by Zoraima:Hi Cottingham: Not that I closely examine what people are doing in their cars, but there are some places you pull into and people are just sitting there, staring at the woods ahead of them. Not looking at anything or reading or doing anything... Makes me wonder what they're doing there... As I say, I have a vivid imagination... In my mind, they're waiting to follow someone into the woods and...well... I'll stop there... You aren't alone (so to speak ) I have done all of my searching either alone or with my 13 y/o son. (No great protection there! LOL) After reading this thread, I think that I will consider taking something with me. Mace? .45? tazer gun? Hm-m-m-m . . . BTW, I think you are wise to be cautious. And many female victims say that they would have been spared if they had only listened to their gut instincts! Best to you, and may we all be safe. ----------------------------------------------------------- Even the smallest person can change the course of the future. --Galadriel, "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship Of the Ring" Piratess
  9. Does this web site or another one provide a live chat room? Piratess
  10. Okay, so how important is it to have a map? I don't expect to be rapelling or hiking overnight. Do you use your map often, in lieu of the other nav screens? Thanks. Piratess
  11. My concern might be ungrounded, but when I'm out I'm afraid that if someone sees me and suspects what I'm doing, they might follow me and damage or steal the cache. I think I would remove any geocaching tags while hunting. Anyone else concerned about this? I know that our symbol isn't highly recognizable right now, but it's becoming more so every day. What do you think? Piratess
  12. I recently bought a Magellan Sportrak, but now I'm second guessing myself. I would love to hear your "Consumer Reports"-type comparisons of the two devices. I have 26 days to return the Sportrak, if it would be considerably advantagous to get the Legend. What are the pros and cons of each, and which will serve me better in the long run? (I don't foresee doing anything besides basic geocaching with these.) TIA Piratess
  13. Did you ever sell your eTrex Legend? I'm interested. Piratess Piratess
  14. I've been reading this whole thread among you fun-loving folks, and it's obvious that you are having a great time! What a hoot. But now I'm wondering what's wrong with using the chat boards to meet other (single?) cachers? I'm brand new to this, and am loving it, but would love to cache with someone else. Any men over 50 or so interested in caching together in Central Tennessee or Kentucky? Piratess
