  1. As far as other accessories, if you are going to be using it for autorouting in the car a lot I'd recommend a auto nav kit and gilsson external antenna. The auto nav kit should come with the beanbag mount, an auto mount, the cigarette lighter adapter, and city select, and should run around 150 bucks. The external antenna is from www.gilsson.com, 19.49 plus shipping, for a 60 or 76 you would want the MCX connector (the tiny gold one). I couldn't imagine driving in the car without my external, I consistently get +/- 6 feet accuracy with it! Other than that the only accessory I can think of is a handlebar mount if you are going to use it for a lot of biking or you ride a bike to geocaches in your area. By the way, excellent choice of GPSr's, I LOVE my 76CS You won't be disappointed!
  2. Here is what will fit in the 60CS memory, the pink shaded (teal in the water) areas take up 55.9 MB, just under the 60CS's 56MB limit Had to overlap into neighboring states to get all of Ohio in. Edit: This was calculated in North American City Select v5, Garmin is at least 4 days overdue (if it isn't in the mail later today) on my upgrade CD, I got an email on the third saying it shipped and to expect it within 7-10 days via First Class Mail, it is now early on the 17th, still no CD (It had better be in the mail later today or I'm gonna SCREAM ) Anyway, some people have reported maps getting slightly larger in v6, hopefully all the highlighted segments still fit after the upgrade. Also, if you do not include autorouting infomation, the highlighted areas only take up 41.8 MB, but I don't know why you wouldn't want autorouting info! Hope this helps!
  3. Proud owner of a 76CS here! All I can say is LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! Can't beat that color screen, easy to read in the sunlight, can't beat the memory, and it floats! (Can you tell I'm a bit biased? ) Seriously though, I couldn't imagine using any other GPSr, not even an hour ago I was checking on a cache in an area with dense tree cover, +/- 10 feet accuracy! I can't think of a single thing wrong with the 76CS except maybe the lack of expandable memory, but the basemap is awesome and if you need more than 115 mb of memory, you need to get a gps that is meant to stay in your car Totally recommend it, 10/10, 5 stars, whatever ranking you want, I give it the highest!
  4. Firmware is exactly the same, only difference between 60cs and 76cs is the 76cs has a larger basemap, floating case, 2x the memory of the 60cs.
  5. I think he meant person by person vote totals
  6. Well, I'm not totally sure if I know what you mean when you say there are two points with the same name, but I think I sort of know what you are talking about. As far as two places with the same name but different points, I know there is a Paris, France as well as a Paris, Texas. So maybe the GPS is picking up multiple cities and you just didn't know the tiny ones existed?
  7. If you are asking for a way to make the unit automatically use the backlight in night mode and not during the day mode, I don't think there is a way to make it do that. However, you can manually do it this way: push your power button until the backlight slider is all the way at the bottom (backlight off). Now press enter and the backlight will never come on until you press the power button. Also, I'd recommend a gilsson external antenna if you are going to use your unit for autorouting or if you are going into heavy tree cover. I have a 76cs, when I am walking around I get anywhere from +/- 13 feet to +/- 25 feet, as soon as I get back to the car and plug in the external, BAM, +/- 6 feet! You start to get spoiled with an external because you realize how much more accurate it makes your unit, and you miss it when you don't have it hooked up
  8. Are we sure we want to use the "hand imitating a gun on the chin" symbol? Yeah I know there are a couple other threads about this but they didn't really touch on this too specifically. I don't know how many of you know (I do because I took 3 years of American Sign Language) but our current sign or handshake or whatever you want to call it is also the ASL sign for lesbian. I have never come across another geocacher during a hunt, so I can't say what I will do the first time it happens, but here is what I am afraid of: You come across a person during a hunt that you think might be a geocacher. You make the "sign", what happens? a ) They are deaf/know the sign, and become offended b ) They are deaf/know the sign, and run away c ) They are deaf/know the sign, and try to get your number d ) They really are geocaching and everything is ok. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather not have a sign that might cause me to get chased down a trail by a deaf lesbian that I offended NOTE: I am very tired as of this writing, so my thoughts might be kinda jumbled, this post is meant in humor (for the most part anyway, I still think it wouldn't be a bad idea to reconsider our sign though), I have no problems with anybody's choice of lifestyle (so please don't start scolding me or whatever), just want to see what everyones thoughts are on this! Now quit reading this and go find a cache!
  9. And we all know how cool Yogi Berra is! Check out my sig! (Just in case by the time someone reads this it has changed, here it is: "You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there" -Yogi Berra)
  10. You betcha, mine was created in photoshop, obviously not the text, thats just a cool tribal font I have, but the rest was done with painstaking tweaking and point/clicking lol, I'm a perfectionist when it comes to those sorts of things Glad to see I have at least one admirer!
  11. I was under the impression that the 60CS took an initial ambient temperature reading to correctly interpret and calculate the data it was getting from the barometric sensor.
  12. I just got my 76CS yesterday (yeah i know the forum is 60CS only but its the same firmware, so sue me ) and I got a Gilsson antenna off ebay, you can get it for 19.49 plus shipping at www.gilsson.com, for a 60 or 76 cs you want a MCX connector (its the really tiny gold one). They list it as drawing anywhere from 5 to 11 mA but 10 on average, and getting a 28dB gain. I can't vouch for those technical specs, but what I can tell you is that yesterday right after UPS delivered my 76CS I put batteries in it, hooked up the external antenna, and took it outside so it could lock on its new home. This is not exaggerated: 35 seconds from pushing the power button to get 8 or 9 sats and +/- 19 ft accuracy. Keep in mind this was just delivered from a place in California, who I'm sure got it from Garmin, which if I am not mistaken is somewhere in the middle of Kansas. Anyway, the point is the GPS had definelty moved more than 600 miles (i'm in North Texas), which means this was a cold start and Garmin says a cold start could take as long as 15 minutes, I did it in 35 seconds! Today I went to a couple of stores, and every time I got back in the car I'd start the GPS back up, within 5-10 seconds it was showing my position on the road and giving lat/lon coordinates. I don't know about you, but I am in love with my external antenna! 35 second cold start and 5 or 10 second hot start sounds like a deal to me! Edit: Just got back from picking my friend up from her work, +/- 6 feet with my Gilsson external antenna YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!
  13. I think you'll be more than happy with your choice. My 76CS arrived today and the first thing I did was attach the external antenna and take it outside so it could get a lock on it's new home. The following is NOT EXAGGERATED: 35 seconds from power up cold start (moved more than 600 miles) to get +/- 19 feet and acquire 8 or 9 sats! I'm in love with this thing! I've been playing with it all night and have yet to find something I don't like about it. Can't wait to take it out caching tomorrow and also test out its auto-routing skills. Keep us updated on what you choose and what you think of it after you get it!
  14. The whole performance under tree cover is a highly debatable topic, do a search on the forums and you'll find several threads about it. My suggestion is if it is that big of a deal what you can do (and what I plan on doing if I end up having trouble under tree cover with my 76cs) is get an external antenna and attach it to a backpack strap or put a large metal washer under your hat and use the magnetic forces to keep the antenna on top of your head. External antennas have a very low power draw (maybe 10 mA on average, can be as low as 5 mA or as high as 11 mA) and are, at least from what I have read, much more sensitive than the GPSr's antenna. I pre-purchased an external antenna as I am going to be using my 76cs in the car a lot and found a good one from www.gilsson.com, says it gets a 28dB gain. Might want to check it out! Other than that I haven't used Magellan products and have no way to compare the two, also there are rumors about Magellans not telling you when they lose a lock, instead plotting your track based on last known vector (speed+direction). I can't confirm or deny that, but hope the external antenna suggestion helps! By the way, the one I got was 19.49 plus shipping.
  15. Just felt like throwing in my $.02: If you can, go hold a 60cs and a 76cs, if you dont mind how the 76cs feels, it is only about 50 bucks more (at least at the place I found, www.jjielectronics.com, 60cs 399.95, 76cs 454.95, that is not a plug just letting you know what I paid!) and you get 2x the memory! Plus I have heard that using the 76cs in the car is easier than the 60cs because the 76's bracket is much easier to get it out of. And of course there is the external antenna option. Here is what I ordered and would recommend: Garmin GPSMAP 76CS and 76CS Auto Navigation Kit (City Select, beanbag mount, auto mount, cigarette lighter adapter)
  16. OK I just want to say this up front: I have never found myself in a position to use a topo map, electronic or otherwise, as I do not live in a country/backwoods/whatever area. However, from what I have read on other people's topo experiences coupled with my own knowledge of GPS units, this is my recommendation. Garmin GPSMAP 60c(s) and GPSMAP 76c(s) both have from what I can tell the best color screen on the market today. My 76cs is due to arrive any minute via UPS, and others have said there is no contest between that color screen and any magellan color screen. From what I have seen in the stores, that seems like the case to me too. I don't have experience with Magellan products so I don't know what they have as far as things to help you fishing, but I do know that the Garmins mentioned above have a hunt/fish calendar that can predict/estimate the best times of day to hunt and fish, and also you can look days and months ahead to see the absolute best days to fish based on the numbers of fish listed (think the star system like 1 to 5 stars, well this is 1 to 4 or 5 fishes). Another plus with the 76cs is the electronic compass and barometric sensor to estimate altitude and help you predict the weather. Also the 76 has (if i'm not mistaken) a tide chart (in case you'd ever use it), so if you couple that with the Garmin MapSource Topo US, that sounds like the absolute best combination to me to give you the edge when fishing. Plus the 76c(s) floats! Bottom line: my recommendation is Garmin GPSMAP 76CS plus Garmin MapSource Topo US; 115 mb of memory, best color screen, autorouting, hunt/fish calendar, tide chart, electronic compass, barometer, and it floats!
  17. Well here's my 2 cents: I spent about a month and a half trying to decide between the 60cs and 76cs, and after going to the store and holding them both, the 76cs does feel larger in the hand despite the dimensions being almost identical to the 60cs. Granted, the 60cs when held in the hand almost feels like an extension, but the 76 if you hold it with your thumb on the rocker switch and your other 4 fingers wrapping around the unit it feels just fine. If you are going to be using it for in car navigation like me (I'm probably going to be using it the same amount as you for the same things) I can't see passing up 2x the memory of the 60cs. Also when holding it, the buttons being at the top really aren't a problem, the only little thing is that when I reach all the way across the unit from right to left to say hit the power or quit button my thumb covers the very top right corner for a split second, nothing major to interfere with what you are doing. My 76cs should be arriving any minute now via UPS, its been on the truck out for delivery since 7:21 AM (i'm assuming eastern, which means 6:21 for me, and its 11:09 now) and I have no regrets. Bottom line: If you can, go hold the 60cs and 76cs, if the size and shape of the 76cs doesn't bother you that much, with 2x the memory, that is the only way to fly PS, if you do decide to go the 76 route, might I suggest getting an auto navigation kit? they can be had for about 150 bucks, comes with City Select, the portable beanbag mount, the auto mount, and the cigarette lighter cord.
  18. Olar: You said you have no problems running it along the rubber strip, how do you get it actually into the car? Do you have a hole in the rubber somewhere or something like that?
  19. Yeah I am hoping that wasn't cacher-related, that is an awfully dense bush. It is hard to tell from the angle but it looks pretty clean cut, I am thinking along the same lines as tirediron as far as a vehicle or intentionally done by some sort of maintenance crew. Do you have any more pics like a larger view of the area or maybe a different angle on the bush? Might help to figure out what happened.
  20. OK was it just me or did this guy seem overly whiny? My arrow points the wrong way, I don't want to look for a film canister in the mud, I dont want to cross a stream, I dont want to look in the cache because there are too many bugs... I'm surprised this guy ever goes outdoors period! Talk about taking all the fun out of it
  21. Those are some good ideas, Alpha I should have mentioned the connector is a MCX so it isn't that much bigger than the cable itself, I was actually surprised at how small it really is. I have come up with a few problems though: 1) Will poking a hole through the weatherstripping cushion the cable enough against closing doors? 2) Going through the trunk poses the same problem as the doors because of the weatherstripping that seals the trunk up 3)I tend to get in to my trunk a lot, so every time it is opened it comes up on the back window about a third of the way, which means somewhere I'd need slack and I don't want a slack wire on my trunk Now for new ideas; While I was looking into these suggestions further I noticed there was sort of a semi-rigid channel that runs the length of the front windshield. Would it be possible to run the cable into the dash through the firewall but also get the cable into that channel to run the antenna to the roof? Or is that a channel that is supposed to take water away from the door and windshield when it rains? One more thing: I only said the thing about carwashes because I was trying to use them for an idea of volume of water I was talking about; I only hand-wash my vehicles so carwash brushes or whatever shouldn't be a problem.
  22. I just did a quick search on this to see what I could come up with, nothing even remotely related to my question came up, figured this was the best forum to post in. I was wondering what the best way to run an external antenna into the car is without compromising the seal that keeps the water out when it rains or go thru a carwash? Is the seal broken if I just close the door on the wire? Is it detrimental to the wire to do so repeatedly? Is there some way to run the wire into the rubber trim and get it into the car through some hole I don't know about? If it helps any the car I am tryin to do this with is a 95 cadillac seville sls, I want to run the wire in on the driver's side, and I have 16 feet of wire to work with. I was planning on putting my gps on the dash in the front left corner by the registration stickers as I already have a radar detector in the middle of my dash. Any thoughts about placement or ideas how to get it into the car?
  23. Micro Cache (adj.) Of or relating to the size of a person's bank account after purchasing the newest top of the line GPSr; see: flat broke
  24. I'd like to enter mine, pretty easy to carve, nothing complicated, but man would it look cool on a hiking staff Hope the rest of you like it even if I don't win! By the way, if I actually do win I can send just a plain b&w outline (much bigger than my av of course) of it to make it easier for you if you want. Thanks again!
  25. Hey Blue: I'm glad you found a place to compare the units and I'm glad you went ahead with the 76CS, I just checked my order via UPS and it is scheduled to get to me on Monday the 9th. It left Cerritos, CA at 2:04 AM on the 5th (I'm assuming thats eastern time since at the bottom of the page it says the tracking results were provided at 10:49 PM Eastern) and as of this writing that means its been in transit for about 20-21 hours! Maybe with some luck it'll get to me early (HAHAHA yeah right.... ) so I can use it this weekend instead of waiting for the beginning of the work week to get here. Oh well, better whenever than never! You'll have to go caching this weekend or use it for some autorouting and let me know what ya think! Congrats again on what I feel is an excellent choice!
